So, yesterday my computer installed some windows update thing. I woke up today, turned it on and what do I get, a blue screen and some automatic repair thing. I let it run through this automatic repair wizard it restarted a few times, asked me if I wanted to restore, I went with it, that failed. So it all came up again, after about 2 hours it then proceeded to tell me that it couldnt find a solution to the problem. :|

I dont feel like sitting through that again so I dug out my recovery CD. There didnt seem to be an option to just overwrite the old windows stuff to try and repair it, so I didnt bother with that. I read around on google but I couldnt find anything to fix. What should I do now if I want to back up my stuff and reinstall windows from sratch?

Ive considered Knoppix or some other bootable form of linux, but Id prefer not to have to fully reinstall windows =/

Any advice?

try pressing F8 before startup (windows loading bar), and try to select startup repair, I think you can use several options there.

No dice. The only two options I get are the startup repairer, and start windows normally.

Is there no safe mode on Vista or something?

No. You press it before Windows is loaded.
