View Full Version : Z-5500 successor any time soon?

I'm thinking about getting a set of Z-5500s. Way back when I bought my Z-640s it wasn't a month or so until the Z-5500 came out. That really sucked, because if I waited just that short amount of time I could have bought a set of what the Z-5500s replaced for about the same price. Now, before I buy the Z-5500s, does anyone know if Logitech is planning on launching the Z-5500's successor any time soon? I'd hate to buy them now, only for them to be half the cost not a couple of months later.

There's not really any changes to be made besides how the unit looks... Just get the z-5500s. I'm still on my Z-680 because there's nothing wrong with them.

I thought they gave the 5500s greater frequency range than the Z-680? And doesn't it have a bigger sub?

Feh, just spazzed out and bought them. They should arrive either Tuesday or Wednesday.

I own the Z5500 system, and it's uber 1337. The subwoofer is about as big as a crt monitor, and depending on your volume, can make the room shake. Pretty badass, especially with a Sound Blaster card.

Oh, and its frequency range is pretty much higher than any other system Logitech has. I doubt they'll have a successor any time soon. When a higher quality sound output is released, that'll roughly be the time that a new audio system comes out, (lets see some 48 bit! Even if that number makes no sense).

Just read about someone blowing out his sub because he turned it up too high right after he got it. He got it replaced under warranty but they charged him 200TTD because he didn't let it "break out". Did it come with plenty of documentation on the do's and dont's and how they relate to the warranty? I cant really use it loudly at home because this place is ancient, but it will be used loudly every once in a while at LAN parties and such. Hell, my Z-640 knocked some flaky paint off the outside of my window.

The 5500 has monster bass that when turned up half way will start to shake the walls. I've had it 3ish years, and it still is amazing. It might not be a problem for you, but it will take up a lot of space.

Here (http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/5597/subwoofercg9.jpg) is a picture that I took of the subwoofer alone. I put the xbox game for a size comparison.

the sub on the z-680 was 8" iirc, the z-5500 is a 10".

I recall the bass being "loose" or something because of the bigger sub, but that was years ago. :-3

:\ I hope I can still fit it in the same place I've been keeping my 640 sub.

The sub's quite a bit bigger so good luck with that.

Yeah, it's big alright... but its so worth it...

Nothing more awesome than being able to shake your house with your woofer half cranked (level menu, not master volume). The only way to take it too far is to turn it all the way up and play a stupidly bass intenstive song, which requires going out of your way to do it because it gets loud enough just at like, 5%.

I never turn my subs up more than 1/3 to 1/2 power. I like my sound balanced and I want to concentrate on what I'm listening to, not keeping my mind on how the sub jiggling my fat ass.

edit: Even better, it's either going to get here tomorrow or monday. Also, I picked it up for about 250 bucks off Amazon. It typically retails for more than 340 USD and goes for a flat 400 straight from Logitech ^_^.

It arrived about an hour ago. I've been trying to get it in the house and subsequently in my room since then.

OH MY GOD THE SUB IS HUUUUGE!!!

I dont have room near my desk to put it, lol. I think in the mean time, I'm going to try plugging it up to my Xbox/TV and checking out some 5.1 sound movies and maybe a game if I can find one that supports it. Now would be an amazing time for me to get a 360.

what were you expecting the sub to be small and compact? :awesome:

No, I expected the frame to be 10", not the actual speaker. Now I have to go build a little platform for it to sit on. My room is halfway underground and draws a lot of moisture. I cant leave cough drops or gum on the floor or else they'll slowly liquify as if they were in a glass of water.

Anyways, I wish this thing came with optical and coaxial. Should the optical audio cable for the PS3 work on anything optical? It looks like it uses the same connector, but knowing Sony it wouldn't surprise me if they made one end slightly proprietary just so it works with the PS3 and the PS3 alone.

I posted a picture so you can see how big it is... The optical cable works on any optical audio device.
