View Full Version : So I Overclocked my q6600.

I overclocked my Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz to 3.0 Ghz.
It's my first time doing anything like this, messing with FSB, QDR etc. but I think I did alright for my first attempt. I may go back and tweak a bit more.
My temps only rose 1 degree celsius for an average of 40c.
Now to OC my Video card. Any advice would be great!

once you finish run 3dmark06 and post your score in this (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10592) thread.

Hm, after about 20 minutes of it being like this the temp has rose from 40 to 50 celsius, which in my opinion is a bit high. If it gets to 55-60 I'm lowering to <2.8.
Averaging 48-51 currently. :\
EDIT: After further research, it seems for the q6600 the temps are perfectly fine for this overclock.
Edit2: I'll rerun 3dmark 06 in a bit.

Most CPUs will take up to 80C+. A quad core at 60C is just fine for max load, and on a stock cooler it might even get to 70C or more on an overclock, which is also fine.
Edit: You should download Orthos (http://www.overclock.net/attachments/downloads/36840d1165737486-orthos-orthos_exe_20060420.zip), which stress tests or CPU and that will give you an idea if you overclock is stable or not. Run it for a few hours to see if there are any problems with you overclock. When orthos is running, I recommend keeping track of the temp with HWMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php). That program will record the max temps that your CPU, and other parts of your system will get to.

It's been about 30-40 minutes now. Temps have dropped back down to 45ish. Looking fine at this point.
My room temp is about 70 F.
Does anyone know of any tools to overclock GPU's?
Ntune or something, I think?

If your looking to overclock your GPU, then download Rivatuner (http://downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.09-download-163.html). Ntune has many bugs, and blue screens a lot when overclocking. When you overclock that G92 you might want to go higher with the shader clocks, than with the core since shaders will give you the biggest boost in games like Crysis or other shader heavy games.

I hear overclocking GPUs isn't a very good idea, due to the fact that stock coolers mounted on them aren't actually all that great. I haven't tried it myself, and I don't know if I want to do it too much.
If you can, I'd overclock your RAM, too. Not a very big boost, but it's worth a shot. Do some research to find out what your RAM can take, then change the timings, voltage and clock accordingly.
I've got my 5-5-5-15 RAM running at 4-4-4-13 at 2.1v right now, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding clock settings that I can actually raise over 400MHz :/
As for my CPU, it's overclocked from 2.6 to 3.2GHz right now, using only the multiplier and a minor voltage adjustment for stability. I hear it can go to 3.4, but that very few people have actually done it. I could get it to 3.3 without much effort, though. Haven't gotten around to it.

From what I read about the q6600 3.6 is highly achievable.
I didn't overclock my GPU. The temps were already 53c.
My ram is SLI read and when overclocking I linked the FSB and the ram. So whenever the QDR was raised, the ram went up with it. At least I think that was ram? :3 I'm still lost on what all of it stands for, (I sortof just followed a small tutorial on which told me what to raise.)

Yea, I've had both my old E6600 and my new Q6600 up to 3.4GHz on the stock cooler, runs rock solid.
I just did it for testing one week though, they're back to their stock settings now (2.4GHz). There's no reason for me to squeeze out a little bit more performance and risk damage to the processor.

Run Orthos (http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm) for like an hour or two after each overclock to make sure your CPU is actually running stable while maxed out.

From what I read about the q6600 3.6 is highly achievable.I should have mentioned that mine's an Athlon X2 :/
