I find these FBX plugins very helpful
What the FBX plugins do is that it allows cross program file sharing. Without messing anything up.
An example would be someone with Max 2008, and the other person has Max 9. The person with Max 9 can't open up max files from the person with Max 2008. So the Max 2008 User can export the model as FBX in the export window. Then the 9 user can import it into their copy of Max.
I have found out that exporting as 3ds and other file formats, will cause open edges and mess up the materials. FBX can export perfectly with no mishaps. Another feature of is that it can also export animations within it.
