I realized that my desktop computer had been running ridiculously slowly recently, and had been getting raped by popups. I decided to download a virus checker, Spybot, particularly. I ran a scan and found 1 trojan horse, 7 malware, and 17 spyware. I want to know if Spybot can take care of these problems, or I have to go to my last resort and reformat again (I just did about a month and a half ago.)
Any help here?

I don't understand how people have these problems. I don't even use any anti-virus or security software and I've never had an infection. I just watch what I download.

The funny thing is that I only download from trusted sites, too.

How the hell do you watch porn then?

I watch striptease on youtube. Striptease is good because I can see the body, but I just think that watching a girl get penetrated by someone else that isn't me is kinda gross.

Try downloading AVG Free, it's been great for me so far. Not that I've ever had a virus...

You can get infected without actually downloading a file to your desktop.

What browser are you using, have you looked at the ActiveX/BHO's that show up in spybot (under advanced settings) there will probably be some dodgy ones, best to upload a pic for us.

OH God, you have that CoolWebSearch thing. I freaking hate it. My brother had it, it was the most annoying virus/spyware/adware ever. Pop-ups every few minutes.

How do you know it hasnt? Most of the time you wont be able to tell unless you scan. Your running Windows?

Well, I got AVG Free and found about 6 trojans, about 7 viruses, 40 tracking cookies (not too bad), and about 10 adware.

I would download Avast, I used it and once I gto spammed with 10 trojan generators and 50 trojans, it did a full sweep and got rid of all of them. I also use Spybot S&D for spyware, seeing as Avast only looks for viruses.

Uh... You're probably infected with SOME type of bad-ware by now then. I've installed Windows on a machine, plugged it into the internet, and left it over-night. I installed AVG the next day and had 4 infections already, and all I did on the PC was browse a couple sites after installing Windows...
It was a year or so ago...
AVG/Avast are about the same amount of protection, I've used both...

BUMP:
I've ran about 6-7 virus scans now and it's still picking up no viruses, but I'm still getting random popups even when IE isn't opened. It has also disabled my Task manager, disallowing me to open it. Worst case scenario seems to be taking place and I guess I'm reformatting again. However I have backed up my tagset and all important files.
I'm hoping I don't have to take the worst case scenario and I don't have to reformat. Any ideas?

Link to CWShredder (http://www.filehippo.com/download_cwshredder/)
Also post a HijackThis (http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/) log so that we can see what's infected you.
Probably best to run CWShredder in Safe Mode, by the way; if the CoolWebSearch malware is active when the program tries to remove it, it may fail.
Also, can you remember the last program you downloaded that may have caused this? If you downloaded something from a site you wouldn't normally trust, give the name or link and I'll look in to it.

i was laughing at my brother at one stage.
he was in group house for uni (everyone on the same internet) and all of a sudden the internet just died... like completely died.
So naturally he went around to find out what was going on. he checked his mates computer only to find that he'd been infected with a number of virus's and trojans and they had sucessfully turned his computer into a pr0n server.

DISASTER STRIKES:
I had been using the computer all day trying to get as much time in before I reformat again.
As another popup comes up, a site called Christianity.com comes up, and I try to close it. And immediately attempts to download about 50 trojans/virses/hijacks attempt to download itself to my computer. It keeps spawning more windows and AVG can't catch up. I also cant turn the site off because it's spawning popups too fast. I also can't switch to task manager because the virus disabled it. I guess I'm to reformatting now.
I'm pretty pissed now, so I'll post when I'm done reformatting tomorrow after school (1st day)

Why didnt you unplug/disable the internet connection? Then you could have cleaned up the pc and that would be that.

Actualy, if the viruses are IN his computer disabling the internet connection wouldin't fix much, it might stop new viruses from infecting his computer, but not the existing ones.

Limited is right, if he did, the downloading would cease, plus the popups couldnt come up, because of no internet connection.

It would prevent the popups loading, freeing up processing power so that his Anti-Virus and other programs can run properly.

It doesn't matter. Reformatting went well and I got a beta from doan so we can get the tagset working (I'll post in somethingteam thread later), but I'm first off gonna grab a Anti-Virus.

I was serious about my last post. Perhaps if you don't look at porn then perhaps you won't get that many trojans.

Nice one FRain >_>
Yes, it's normal, because they often are threats. You'll end up needing another reformat, so use an alternative to Photoshop.
