A couple days ago when I played it, it was working fine. Today, it just goes to the first "HALO" logo you see, then it blacks out (normal), but instead of going to that same logo then going to the menu, Halo disappears and all I see is my desktop, start bar, etc. Halo is still in the taskbar, but I can't minimize it or maximize it. I tried re-installing, but that didn't do squat. Anybody got any ideas on how to fix this? Oh, I recently got a betamap from HDoan, but it works fine on his computer, and when I delete the map from my maps folder, it's still shows up blank.

The map wouldn't have any effect on the game. This used to happen to me all the time. There is nothing wrong with the game, a file or even a registry file could be like, a bit messed up... When this happens and its sitting in your taskbar, try continuously clicking it, like don't stop clicking it, fast and it should open it up... if this is the same thing that happened to me. It eventually stopped. Was really weird. Tell me if doing this helped, and don't just try it once. :)

No, I don't think that's it. It just has this little bar on the left side of my screen that says "HALO CUSTOM EDITION", but it's in the Windows 95 theme instead of Windows Vista. It also still plays the sound and I can move the arrow keys to chose things on the menu, but I just see my desktop. Another thing, when I hit escape in what I believe to be the main menu, then hit what I think was quit, it gave me a "gathering exception data". Could I be missing some files?

Take out a few maps and try again. That sometimes fixes it for me.

Try running in windowed mode. Right click on your shortcut and in the box that says.

Target: "C:\Microsoft Games\Halo CE\haloce.exe"

add - window so it looks like this.

"C:\Microsoft Games\Halo CE\haloce.exe" -window

Okay, this happened to me before. I narrowed it down to 3 things: Vista itself, using DXTweaker with Vista, and a bad profile. Since then I've really not used Vista anymore. If you can dualboot (if you are even running on Vista), do so.

If you are using DXTweaker, stop. The other thing to do is go to My Documents -> My Games -> Halo CE -> savegames. Delete any folders in there. It'll delete your profile, but you can just make a new one once the game works again.

Sometimes this stuff settles itself out if you restart you computer by properly shutting it down and rebooting it. I had a big sound error a while back and doing just that fixed it. I think I also had this same problem some time ago, but that was when I used my disc (my computer can't run discs anymore). If you've tried this, try making sure no other applications, even xfire, are occupying the computer while opening CE.

Turns out that was the problem. Thanks a bunch! I owe you one!
