So as some of you know, I recently built a new computer. I finally decided to reinstall Halo, and I go to play, looks awesome, and then in the middle of a fight my FPS plummets down to near nothing. This never happened before with my old computer.
The fuck :gonk:

Try turning off your decals. Mine was the same way on Vista. It'd go from 600 or so fps to 12 because a shitload of z-fighting faces that were some how caused by decals.

Yeah, that did it.
Is there any way to fix this? I spent weeks on those blasted blood decals and I don't want to not see them because of some stupid hardware glitch. e_e

Lol way to go captain success.
Makes me kind of nervous to start buying higher end graphics cards... hate to see old games turn to crap cause the computer is too good.

It's weird- I have Vista 32-bit, 4 gb of ram, an 8800GT, and no problems whatsoever. I had to turn off hardware antialiasing, but the decals work fine, thankfully. Has anyone recorded who can and can't handle decals, and what system specs they're running? It might help to narrow down the issue.

Nvidia cards seem to have this problem, especially the 8 series. Try turning off decals.

Judgeing by the context of these posts I felt that some people people were blamming there computers, rather than there graphics card. for I belive that I had read somewhere that a certain type of card created that effect while others didn't. excuse me for not knowing every pain staking detail about how a computer works and for trying to give my opinion on what may be causing a certain problem. I was unaware that most people here knew this.

Ok, so at the moment we have:
Working With Decals:
nVidia 8800GTX (768 MB)
nVidia 8800GT (512 MB and other variants)
nVidia 8600GTS
nVidia 8600GT (256 MB)
nVidia 7950GT
nVidia 7800GTX note: has the nVidia active-camo issue (unrelated)
ATi HD x2600 (512 MB)
ATi Radeon X1600PRO 256MB PCI-E
Sapphire Radeon x1950gt
ATi HD4870
ATi HD4850
ATi 4850
Problem Cards:
nVidia 8600GT (256 MB) note: has appeared to work on at least one computer- other system specs possibly involved?
Nvdia GTX 280
Radeon x1600 note: disputed- system settings or specific model also involved?
Anyone else want to contribute?

nVidia 8800GTX 768 MB
This would be a lot more accurate if somebody could make a script that searches the forums, finds active users, and then tries to find their computer specifications. Given that, if they didn't list the specifications, you'd have to right a script to message them.
That sounded more coherent in my head than it does now.

My 8600gt 256mb gets FPS drops, usually down to 20-25.

I'm positive it deals with the type of graphics card you're using. MY computer is a piece of junk, but now it can run Halo with decals on on the lowest resolution. In any sense, try virus scanning your computer then disable shadows. The game sometimes runs slower when you add shadows. I use an older ATI model from a few years ago, which is one reason why I'm positive it's the type of graphics card.

I'd like to challenge those. I have confirmed the Powercolor ATi Radeon X1600PRO 256MB PCI-E working excellent with decals and everything else set to the highest settings. Seriously, ATi>nVidia.

I'm using the ultra-new&fancy Nvdia GTX 280.
I think that the combination of Vista/8000+ series cards may have something to do with an unintentional DX10 conflict unique to Nvidia cards, so I'm screwing around with some settings.

Seems like the most likely explanation, but it's odd that so many people have working cards in that category.

And some other guys said they had it working on nvidia 8 series cards, so I don't think it's a direct problem with graphics cards :\
