SUMTER, S.C. - Police in South Carolina say a 12-year-old trick-or-treater was killed when a convicted felon fearing a robbery fired nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside a house.
Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson says T.J. Darrisaw died Friday evening after being shot multiple times.
His father and nine-year-old brother were also shot, but were treated and released.
Quentin Patrick has been charged with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill. Police say the 22-year-old ex-convict told them he'd been robbed and shot in the past.
Police say T.J.'s family attended a Halloween celebration east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on.
Two other siblings were with them but weren't hurt

In before "Only in America". That's just terrible. Why is the ex-con allowed to own firearms? Or was illegal possession just not mentioned in those charges?

more like why the fuck didnt he look out the door before shooting...

Oh come on guys, this is totally understandable! Do you know how many thieves knock on my door when they see the porchlight on so I can let them rob my house? It was just a big misunderstanding.

In before gun control argument.

I think 30 rounds was a bit overkill, if it was only for one person, as he thought.

i dunno about you guys, but a person that stands 4 and a half feet tall and is dressed up in a costume is deffinently someone who can over power you and rob you.
Better shoot first.
Minimize the midget threat.

Yes, especially when it's on Halloween, and there are hundreds of other disguised midgets...

We don't need a debate for every time something weird happens. The guy was stupid not to look out his window at least first and why the fuck would you keep your light on and then fire blindly out of the door? Light on or not, robberies could still happen. If he was this trigger finger edgy, he should have turned his light off and waited for something to actually break into his house.
One last thing. If I didn't stop tricker treating 3 years ago, I'd stop now. Jams are safer apparently :D

I just thought about that. I don't know what restrictions ex-cons have when they get out or if they had any at all. So I just assumed they still had all the rights of a regular American, which includes the right to own a fire-arm.
Also...isn't three to four automatic rounds enough to scare off a robber if even they have only a handgun?

I'm pretty sure ex-con's arn't aloud to own as many fire arms as people with clean records, but they can still own some.
More to the point, as far as I'm aware (and my knowledge of American gun law is limited at best) civ's shouldn't be aloud to own an automatic weapon at all, so I'm sure he'll be in all manner of shit over that too.

Actually, 12 year olds don't have to be that small. I know a 13 year old (just turned day before Halloween) thats 5 foot 6.

How about you try firing an automatic weapon when afraid?
Anyways, it doesn't surprise me this has happened. Not all people keep up with the holidays. What would you think if people dressed up in costumes started banging on your door and you didn't know it was halloween? Not only that, but you've been robbed and shot in the past....

Who doesn't know when it's October? If you know Halloween exists and it's that time of the year, and it's been October for a while, assume it's Halloween. But this isn't the real issue, regardless.
I don't know how many restrictions ex-cons have on owning guns, but if they can still own fucking assault rifles...

yeah, big difference between knowing what month it is and what day it is.

What I was trying to get at would be something along the lines of "Oh, there's pumpkins outside and shit. People are in costumes. I guess it's halloween." The point was if you think rationally, you would think "Trick Or Treaters" before "Robbers", if you at least knew what month it was, but were not keeping up with what day it is. Obviously he had been shot and robbed before, and there's a good chance he wasn't thinking rationally.
But that wasn't really the point of my post, and I was pointing out a what-appeared to be flawed statement, when really I just misinterpreted what you were trying to say.

Whatever the case, the guy's going to the slammer anyway for owning a fully automatic weapon while convicted of a felony, even if he does somehow manage to weasel his way out of the main charge there.
