This is it.
Some of the swing states are going to go McCain; most of them are evenly matched, so while Obama is near guaranteed a win, there is a chance the lead may not be as great as we thought.

Rob Oplawar

As was previously stated, the popular vote for the presidency is nothing more than a poll, with no legal standing on which candidate is actually elected.
But really, I can't see it happening that Obama wins the popular vote yet McCain still gets the presidency- there would be some serious outrage.

Of course, my guess is that this vote is actually gonna be really close, and no matter who wins the other side is going to be outraged. If Obama wins the republicans will call ACORN on them, and if McCain wins the democrats are gonna call out the republicans for suppressing the votes of potential Obama voters.

I will join you in person for a hearty laugh if Obama goes Hitler on us, Dane. That would be the perfect irony.

@Rob: There's a 0.3% chance of Obama winning the popular vote, but losing the election.

sdavis117
November 4th, 2008, 02:22 PM
John McCain has a 16% chance of winning the election from what I heard. At 6pm (GDT-6) Virginia will close it's polls, and that will be the first state to watch. If Obama wins Virginia, break out the fireworks and Champagne (hopefully in that order), Obama will win. If McCain wins it, Obama will still probably win, just it would be slightly less likely.

I must say McCain gave a good concession speech, if he'd been like that the whole campaign he probably would've done a lot better vOv

^ my thoughts exactly, it's the cost of selling your soul though ross.
8 years ago when he was a candidate he said he'd never take the lowest road to the highest office in the country, yet when he campaigned last year and this his moral's and principals went out the window to dupe the people into what would have been another 4 years.

i think some of the man he was supposed to be during the election shone through.

I'm actually proud of you america, i'm proud to be your allies tonight. You have made possible the chance for change, real change not just a word but an outcome, to be led away from ignorance and TV and dirty political ads and fox news to see there is another option, there is another option and you dont have to be people that the world has became disgusted at.
You've chosen to better yourselves and for that you've gained my respect.

now kick Obamas ass into gear and get started.

Having just watched Obama's acceptance speech (my internet is horribly slow and I missed it on TV), I'm almost speechless. I'm not American, I've never lived in America, and the side of my family which came from it did so more than half a century ago; all the same, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride and hope. I guess it's not so much for America as it is humanity in general; having sat back and hated the direction the world seemed to be going for the last eight years, I can now look forwards to things improving for a change. Even if a lot of people do overhype America's power or significance, there's no denying that it is one of the most important nations on the Earth. When America is in dire straits, we all are. When America is strong, we all are. For the past eight years, America has been on a steady downhill slide and the rest of the world was dragged down with it. Now, we can actually take a deep breath and regain our hope. I don't know what would've happened if the election had gone the other way and I'm not going to take a guess, but this outcome has already made vast improvements. Look at some of the people in the audience during Obama's speech, standing proudly while tears of joy roll down their cheeks. It's just amazing to behold, and it's promising that not only does the US now have a strong president, but it has one who will use that strength to try and undo the mistakes of the Bush administration.

Maybe the world's not such a lost cause after all.

I can't wait to see who wins in Missouri, Indiana, and North Carolina.

EDIT: Couldn't agree with Ross more. I'm normally a pessimistic jackass and even I felt a sense of relief after Obama was announced as the winner.

I just simply didn't see that in McCain. He aligned himself too much with the policies of Bush and as a result I don't think he would have been able to solve our financial woes and support the will of the common person. McCain will be a fine servant to his country but I don't think that he was ready to lead. If McCain had been in this position 4 or 8 years ago then maybe things would have been different, maybe not. But all I know is that he is better off serving his country from the Senate then he would be as president.

Ugh, Palin. Simply way too inexperienced to be a good VP. She never should have accepted the invitation. She simply wasn't a good pick from the beginning. She doesn't have a complete understanding of our own constitution! Give her another couple of years to learn some of this stuff and sure, she might be a viable candidate. But all that this campaign did was tarnish her image.

I'll mention one final thing that I thought was cool that was mentioned by MSNBC; instead of having the first Vietnam-war president, we have the first Civil Rights president. I think that it is fitting that in such bleak times we have a President whose upbringing reflects positive change and improvement for the American people. I hope that this trend follows through with his policies.

The amount of pomp on page 10 makes me want to puke.

Other than that, I'm glad Obama won. I don't have to worry about religious nuts too close to power now, and since we have a united government, some change can happen, and maybe we'll bust this deficit of ours over the next 8 years.

Yay for Colorado! We're not a red state anymore! W00t w00t.

I haven't had a chance to watch either candidate's speech yet, but I have to agree with Ross that the last few months really have made me feel quite a bit of national pride. I'm not at all proud of what we allowed to happen to our economy, but I am proud of the reaction- for a long time I've felt that the majority of people in America just don't give a shit as long as they get their TV and McDonald's, but during a crisis here people really are taking notice and doing something about it.

I've said it before, and the more I say it the less I'm joking about it: Bush was terrible, but maybe it took some terrible times to bring people together the way we needed to. Maybe in the long run what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. :P

Here's hoping for (and working towards) a better four years!

^^ I agree with this statement

I will say though, talking to my friends who are McCain supporters, the amount of indirect (or direct) racism and selfishness is astounding. Here's two quotes:

_______ is wow, allowing minorities and kids to determine an election is probably a good idea, right?

_______is fuck...we are screwed.

_______wow, America, seriously? you had to give the Vietnam vets one last hard slap in the face didn't you?

_______can't wait for Obama to take more of her family's hard-earned money and give it to people on welfare who don't work and illegal immigrants. FUCK YOU OBAMA.

And the most astounding one of all is from a 14 year old friend of my sister

______is oh crap were in for 4 years of hell.

It really frightens me to think I lived in that town.

A little odd, but w/e.

I spent last night in my suite. We can only have one internet device hooked up to the internet at one time, so we were switching from Halo to the election coverage. Then in the middle of a game my epic-liberal friend from the west coast calls and about 10 people yell "OBAMA!". I'm like, yeah, Obama what? And they yell back, "HE WON!" And then I had to admit we were playing Halo. :P

We went out and watched the acceptance speech and had an Obama party involving blasting the speech out the open window, candy, Halo, and Star Trek First Contact with a bunch of nontrekkies. :D So awesome to be part of history!

Jackson, they called him the jackass.

He liked it quite a lot, and it was later popularized by Thomas Nast.

why are the symbols an elephant and a donkey, seriously wtf a donkey? your mocking yourself arent you?i think the eagle and the turkey (http://www.greatseal.com/symbols/turkey.html) would be more apropriate
The Eagle, Ben Franklin, and the Turkey

A year and a half after the Great Seal was adopted by Congress on June 20, 1782 – with the bald eagle (http://www.greatseal.com/symbols/eagle.html) as its centerpiece – Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to his daughter and shared some thoughts about this new symbol of America. He did not express these personal musings elsewhere, but they have become legendary.

Franklin's Letter to His Daughter (excerpt)
"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.
"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country . . .
"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

Palin didn't know Africa was a continent or what countries were part of NAFTA. ...AS REPORTED BY FOX NEWS :XD:

also, REQUIRED READING:
Newsweek's "Secrets of the 2008 Campaign", 3 of 7 chapters online.
Ch 1: Barack Obama: How He Did It (http://www.newsweek.com/id/167582)
Ch 2: John McCain: Back from the Dead? (http://www.newsweek.com/id/167639)
Ch 3: The Long Clinton-Obama Siege (http://www.newsweek.com/id/167755)
Absolutely fantastic.

Newsweek's Highlights: (http://www.newsweek.com/id/167581/page/1)

"What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I fucking changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."

At the GOP convention in St. Paul, Palin was completely unfazed by the boys' club fraternity she had just joined. One night, Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter went to her hotel room to brief her. After a minute, Palin sailed into the room wearing nothing but a towel, with another on her wet hair. She told them to chat with her laconic husband, Todd. "I'll be just a minute," she said.

One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech Tuesday night, but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request.

McCain was dumbfounded when Congressman John Lewis, a civil-rights hero, issued a press release comparing the GOP nominee with former Alabama governor George Wallace, a segregationist infamous for stirring racial fears. McCain had devoted a chapter to Lewis in one of his books, "Why Courage Matters," and had so admired Lewis that he had once taken his children to meet him.

wow.
