I still can't figure out why we can't just have the popular vote be the official one. I mean, the founding fathers didn't trust the people more than two hundred years ago. Why do we still have to use their system? - _ -

We used it because back then the vast majority of the populace was malinformed and didn't know much about the candidates. People use the same argument today.

Honestly, it's just a method of control used by pupeteers.

Which is a lot more than they researched them back in the 1800s... We have significantly more information now and the general populace that actually does vote has a better chance of making an appropriate decision.

correct me if im wrong, but arnt new york and California two of the most densely populated states in the country? and arnt they both primarily blue states? if we went off of the people's votes, wouldnt these two major areas kind of offset the balance a little bit? the president is supposed to be elected from whoever gets the most votes, but quite a few of the people i talk to dont really care about polotics, yet still vote, and usually for the candidate that thier friends and family all want to win. i think the electoral colleges are to make sure densly populated areas dont offset the
vote too much for people who dont put the effort into undrstanding the issues
again, i may be totally wrong about that

Because people were, and will continue to be fucktards. The whole idea of presidential voting is dumb. Your vote doesn't count. The popular vote is pretty much just a statistic that the electoral college can choose whether or not to listen to. The only real reason to vote in presidential elections is to see how it stacks up compared to the electoral votes. Hell, we would of had Al Gore as president back in 2001 if our votes mattered.

Btw, I have no idea if what I just said makes any sense. I'm one of them American fucktards I mentioned earlier.

I can see your point, but it's a bit defeatist. Assuming people aren't just voting because their friends are (which may or may not be the case), the fact that there are a lot of people in the blue states means that there are more Democrats. Logically, that would mean that it would be more likely for a Democratic president to be elected via the popular vote. Isn't that the whole point of an election?

Actually I think it has to do with the fact that not many people voted back then, so there was the likely possibility of a tie. Now though over 100 million people vote so the chances of a tie are next to none.

This.

Also, stop complaining about "your vote doesn't count cus of electoral college". It's never happened, and hopefully never will. In the case of the 2001 election it was more along the lines of votes not getting counted/other bullshit than outright electoral college going the other way.

It's weird. So, basically, people from each state go out and vote. Each state has an electoral college, based on the population of the state. The electoral college is supposed to pick the candidate for the state. The electoral college is *supposed* to pick the candidate that the people of the state vote for, but are not required to. So, for example:

If we only have 3 states, 1 2 and 3:

State 1: 5 million people, 10 electoral college votes
2: 1 million, 2 ec
3:10 million, 20 ec.

Candidate would need 17 electoral votes to win (majority).

Lets say its 51/49 in state 1. All 10 electoral college votes go to the 51 candidate. However, if for some reason, the electoral college thinks the people are just plain wrong, they can decide to give the votes to the 49 guy.

The latter is extremely rare, the former is how a candidate can win a popular vote but not electoral college. Lets say only 1 million people vote in state 3 (unrealistic situation that one state would decide election, i know, but lets do it for simple math's sake). That means that candidate would win, even if EVERYONE in the other two states voted for the other one (6 mil vs. 1 mil, but 12 vs. 20 ecv). Again, the math would probably NEVER turn out that way, but just a few moments ago Obama was ahead in popular, but behind in electoral college. There's more I'm not covering I'm pretty sure, but that should explain it for now.

What the fuck. How dare you mention that no good hack on this fucking board. He stole Bill Hicks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks) entire act and Hicks died so he had no opposition. Everything that fucker has become is because of his mooching off Bill, a person who tried to open our eyes and became another dead hero, while people like Dennis leary lifted his entire essence (minus the integrity) from someone else.
Many comedians have acknowledged Hicks as an influence since his death. However, there have been some arguments made that certain comedians plagiarised Hicks' material and attempted to pass it off as their own, notably Denis Leary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Leary).[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-8) To date IMDB still credits Hicks as an "uncredited" writer for Leary's "No Cure for Cancer" album.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-9) Hicks himself had a chance to listen to Leary's album No Cure for Cancer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Cure_for_Cancer) during his trip to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas during 1993 to report on the infamous siege (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waco_Siege). Upon hearing the album, Hicks was angered.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-Outhwaite-10)
While he had laughed off similarities between the two comedians before, the albums' similar content (including jokes about smoking, Jim Fixx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Fixx), and Judas Priest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judas_Priest)) and tone suggested plagiarism.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-11) In an interview, when he was asked why he had quit smoking, he answered, "I just wanted to see if Denis would, too."[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-12) Hicks told an interviewer: "I have a scoop for you. I stole his act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did." Hicks was further incensed that Leary's album was released through A&M Records, giving the album assured publicity and sales.
At least three stand-up comedians have gone on the record stating they believe Leary stole not just some of Hicks' material but his persona and attitude.[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-13)[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-14)[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-hicksfaq-15) As a result of this, it is claimed that after Bill Hicks' death from pancreatic cancer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreatic_cancer), an industry joke began to circulate about Leary's transformation and subsequent success (roughly; "Question: Why is Denis Leary a star while Bill Hicks is unknown? Answer: Because there's no cure for cancer").[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hicks#cite_note-hicksfaq-15)

Also, speaking of Hicks, some relevent quotes are in order:

"I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs. I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking. Hey, there's one guy, holding both puppets."

"I ascribe to Mark Twain (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0878494/)'s theory that the last person who should be President is the one who wants it the most. The one who should be picked is the one who should be dragged kicking and screaming into the White House."

"I'm tired of this back-slapping "Isn't humanity neat?" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are."

"I hate patriotism...I can't stand it. It's a round world last time I checked."

Hotrod

Well, that's kind of fucked up, in my opinion. The electoral college could be quite biased, and change the votes to their own wants. Methinks that's what happened when Bush won.I'm not too involved in it, but I'm pretty sure that people vote for electors to go vote for a president. You're voting for a Gore/Kerry/Obama supporter, or a Bush/McCain supporter, depending on which president you vote for. They aren't likely to change their mind.

Besides, there's pretty much statistical proof showing that Bush did win the electoral vote. Due to the magic of flash electoral maps, they put the numbers in for each state, and it shows the results. This map shows previous years. (http://scoreboard.dailykos.com/map/) Sure, the system is pretty stupid, but it isn't really rigged.

Still, one benefit of the electoral system is that we can pretty much see who's going to win in advance. Adding together numbers like 5, 21, 34, etc., is much easier than 1.7 million, 9.3 million, 6 million, and so on. :P
