I've heard arguments go either way, vote here and explain why one or the other is better.

I have mine horizontal, mainly because the one time I had it vertical I kicked it over and GTA got ruined. Plus I got my flatscreen monitor on it. I bet vertical is better for ventilation but its less stable (falling over wise)

Giving a poll would have been nice :p. Anyway, I have heard that keeping your 360 horizontal is better. I keep mine vertical however, and have only had a problem with a piece of the disc drive coming apart....almost killed my Halo 3 disc, and it took me forever to get the damn 360 apart in order to fix it. But I don't think they disc drive thing had anything to do with me having it vertical.

Edit: You put a poll up, lol.

Horizontal all the time. Something that light and thin was never meant to be up like that.

Abdurahman
November 6th, 2008, 12:01 AM
I would put it horizontal. Mainly cause I have 2 cats who wil knock it over, and I'm too poor to afford another halo 3 of call of duty 4.

Heathen

Horizontal.

Safer and better for stacking shit on top of it.

Why on earth would you want it vertical?

InnerGoat
November 6th, 2008, 12:19 AM
It looks like a giant router sitting vert. It gets as much use as the dead hard drives on the shelf below it, so I leave it like that.

Zeph
November 6th, 2008, 12:44 AM
horizontal here. No fucking reason whatsoever to risk a 400 dollar console dying because it got knocked over.
It does look cool standing up vertical though.

I have it vertical, but only because thats how it fits into my shelf. there's some bins next to it, so i'm not worried about it falling.

Mines vertical in a cabinet with about 6 inches on either side and solid ventilation, just fits well.

paladin
November 6th, 2008, 01:07 AM
I've had too many bad experiences and ruined discs to keep it vertical anymore. I wrecked my GTA 4 disc an hour after I got it because I accidentally kicked over my xbox while it was up right

Hotrod
November 6th, 2008, 07:45 AM
Horizontal, since that's the only way it can fit on the shelf it's on.

Saggy
November 6th, 2008, 07:51 AM
Both of mine are vertical, because they're both on top of my desk, so there's no way I can really knock them over. Also, horizontal is safer, but having it vertical lets it ventilate easier. IMO, the 360 is a piece of shit design. There's no compromise for having the thing safe from falling over and still ventilate well.

horizontal, because
-More Stable
-Actually better for your dvd drives laser
-Same ventilation as if vertical, I take 360's apart all the time, and theres a metal cage surrounding the mother board, which completely covers the bottom of the mobo, so whether you have it horizontal or vertical, you'lll still get the same ventilation.

There literally are no advantages to vertical other then tight space, or it maybe looking cexci somewhere..

Mine is wedged between my computer stand and a small table, so I don't worry about it falling. It saves a bit of space, too.

That's good to know. Too bad I have no room to lie two of them down on my desk :(

Lol I have three 360's, and my brothers, and I just stacked my 3 on top of each other, obviously only running 1 at a time but yea, hasnt overheated yet. My primary console has a custom case on it though, which allows some better airflow..

Siliconmaster
November 6th, 2008, 11:50 AM
Vertical, only because I have my massive computer case on one side and my lcd screen/right speaker on the other. It is never going to fall over, unless someone does something drastic. Normally though, I'd like to have it horizontal.

Llama Juice
November 6th, 2008, 12:17 PM
Vertical between a PC and a mini fridge ('bout 4 inches free on both sides) It's not going to fall over, and I don't have a spot to put it having it lay down on it's side...

You people stack stuff on it while it's laying sideways? the system feels too cheap to support any weight like that... gah

The metal caging of the motherboard is actually quite strong, which surprised me one time when i was going to cut a whole out of it in the back where the fans are(was fixing a 3rrod box)

pics of my setup, why not?

they did a preview program like a week ago, only a few thousand were picked, its out the 19th. Sucks they didnt include avatars into it..

vertical cause it's in a cabinet with little risk of being bumped and because it sits on an intercooler stand that gives it a much wider base anyway. Plus even without the intercooler it gets better ventilation vertically, unless I propped it up off the ground horizontally, and then it would have just as much chance of being knocked over, so what's the point.

Not that it does me any good now that its graphics processor has gone kaput.

StankBacon
November 6th, 2008, 04:09 PM
horizontal because it looks better to me.

also, for those worrying it will break from being knocked over... mine fell down the stairs, fell off a tv and shelves a few times, and it still works fine.. the thing is pretty durable.

Horizontal, because it looks sexy sitting on glass horizontally.:)

Vertical. Mines in a pretty safe position, and I'm the only one who uses it.

I like mines erect and one side is velcro'd to the wall anyway.

I always try to ensure that all my airholes are uncovered since I live in a pretty freaking hot climate. So I put it horizontal, with a short book on the bottom to elevate it slightly so that it gets breathing space. Also, it looks neater on my already cluttered desk.

itszutak
November 6th, 2008, 07:45 PM
I prefer horizontal but that blocks the remote sensor on the TV, so I'm stuck with it being vertical. :/

Con
November 6th, 2008, 07:48 PM
Horizontal, I don't want it getting knocked over. Also, the big important looking vent is exposed.

Timo
November 6th, 2008, 09:44 PM
Vertical because it sits snugly against my PC, it's not going to move.

DarkHalo003
November 6th, 2008, 10:09 PM
I have it vertical because that's how it fits next to my TV. Also, when I was winning against my brother in a game, he stomped on my 360 and almost caused it to RRoD. So it stays vertical because I damn like it that way too. :hist101:

yea thats not a 360 fault though, its just your powersupply needing to be reset, since the console couldnt get enough power to fully run. That happened last week to my brother, hes playing gears, power outtage, turns the 360 back on and calls me freaking out"WTF the 360 died again its red ringing again ahhh!" I was like dude chill unplug it.

Well the setup I ended up with for the moment has the 360 sitting horizontally on top of a couple of game cases. It's reasonably stable and all vents are open. I was worried about ventilation because this thing was spewing out some disturbingly hot air while playing Fable 2.

Rob Oplawar
November 7th, 2008, 01:13 AM
oh god, spewing hot air out of its vent

come on, there's some gold material here. Why can't anybody come up with a good innuendo? The Todd would be ashamed.

hot air is all that rob is capable of spewing. and i'm not talking about from his mouth either, though that's a given.

Horizontal because I have it sitting on top of the TV(big thick one) because that's the only way it fits(got one of those wooden home entertainment TV case things.) used to have it vertical because my old TV was smaller and it fit perfectly so there was no chance of knocking it over.

Why does the position its in effect the ventilation though? The air comes from the top so why does it matter?

your rrod was not because it was vertical, but because your system was bound to fail due to microsoft's cheap heatsink clamps and shitty thermal paste application.

When I had it vertical, it broke. And I didn't have the RROD, I just had overheating errors.

And what he's saying is that you should not make a statement that implicitly states that having the console in a vertical position is the cause of errors.

I've had mine in the vertical position for about a year and a half and its been doing just fine.

I would keep mine vertical if I didn't already have it all nice and neat horizontally and all the extra safety horizontalness gives me.

I did not make any statements saying the likes. My statement had two parts:

I had mine vertical

Which I did.

and it broke

Which it did.

Those are the truths of my side of the story. Take it for what you like.
