The lighting gets really bright and shitty, and there's a HUGE performance drop, like the file permanently gets halved framerate. I have to re-import the objects into a new scene if I want to work properly. Is this a bug, or is there a way to fix this?

I have the same problem. I would like to know why this is too. Do you use max 8?

sounds to me like your meshes verts are all being detatched, causing large vert counts. This allways happens on import with editable mesh.
Try going editable poly and selecting all the vertices, with ctrl+a, then go weld and make the threshold pretty low, like .05
If it doesn't work, I have no idea.

Tried it, wasn't the issue :/. Whatever, luckily I'm a lot better at modeling now, only took a few trips back into the bsp to fix errors.
E: ok, the errors for some reason take up a bunch of performance. Still, the shitty lighting is annoying as hell.
