I am applying to RIT as my first choice. I am going to try and get Game Design and Development as a minor, so I'll be sending in the latest map I've been helping to develop (giving credit where credit is due) as an art supplement.
1) Do you think this is necessary/credible
2) If so, what medium should I send it in as (picture or the .max file)

Get names. It's going to look unprofessional if you're crediting texture work to "CEfreek1337" or some shit... I'd arrange an organized display of pictures, ie. a large image showing off individual areas, almost like a collage, properly labeled. Maybe attach the .max file, but chances are they aren't that interested in looking around it.

Sending anything you've done (as long as its a good standard) is good, it will let them know you're dedicated and passionate about what you do. Ok they may give a bit of criticism like the way you have done it is sloppy, but then again thats why your going there, to learn the professional techniques, right?
Send both types, they dont want to have to mess around having to install max just to see if, if you send picture and cd with max file on they can look at the picture and if they do have max, they can go in and have a closer more detailed look.
Is that the name of the course?
Do you live in UK?
Just to let you know, by the sounds of the course name, its more theory/coding based than art asset creation, or at least in my personal experience it is.
e. Couldnt resist adding more info...If you do send the stuff, along with pictures of final (ingame map) make sure you right up a brief intro into the work, so for instance say I wanted to help improve my modeling skills along with making game content..." It's produced for a game called halo custom edition which gives you the tool set to create your own maps/vehicles/etc..." basically just give a backstory because theres more work that goes into it than just the modeling (to make a map as you know :D)

What types of models have you made? BSP layout designs? Structures? Que?

thehoodedsmack: For me, this is just implied (it is akin to giving the college my e-mail for internet buddies (which is my gamertag at gmail.com); yikes!).
Limited: I do not live in the UK. I live in MA, USA. I've also gone to those labs, and yes, it is much more concentrated on XNA development (which I'm in a way sickened that we cannot just work with DirectX), but I am also a programmer so I'd like to be able to create the engine and the content as well. As part of the course, you must choose asset creation or some other sub-category as part of the course to work on. So, I'd do BSP and texture creation. I'd, of course, add a .doc file describing the map, what engine I have it in, who did what, etc.
Syuusuke: I've been co-creating the map "BiMyrrha" in the Halo CE Dev forum. I've also created another map "Observatory", but that was an extremely mediocre piece of artwork. Also, do you go to RIT or are you applying?

Read their portfolio guidelines. They're quite specific. Iirc there's stuff about 3d work on there. Also, don't show them a bunch of random models, just because you have them. Show them what you think is your best work (not what others tell you is your best work).
