To be personal, I think they over reacted, they had no proof he had been stealing money, but no I do not believe this was racism, as I would tend to cuss out someone who stole from me.
Discuss.

You know what, when I went to Italy I did not see one black person, surprising huh? That is also why there is this over reaction over the cookies.

Just because he's black doesn't mean he was beat to death for it. If I ran into Italy and stole cookies then I'd probably be bitten the hell out of too.lol. The point I'm making is that people overreact to stuff and that not everything is motivated by racism or other crap people take way too much into account.

^You do have a point, in some parts of the world, when you steal stuff your hand or finger gets cut off.

It's what the article addresses, they said a racial slur as they beat him, and attacks like this have been frequent, but I do not think stealing cookies would cause you to be killed, even in America.
.................................................. ........................................^Never mind on that.

I don't know if it was due to racism, or overreaction to a situation, or even a combination of both, but all I know is that what they did was wrong, and they should suffer the consequences for it.

No, there are places in the world where thieves get huge penalties, sometimes death. In this case, seeing as how I read a bit more of the article, it does look like the Italian oppressors were more hateful towards the man being an immigrant than a black person. I don't know how Italy feels towards immigration, but a big part of the article was the fact that the oppressors disliked immigrants in general. That would be a more suited reason to put down than the fact that the victim was a black man. Anyways, it could have been the Italian Mafia too....lol.....:XD:

if theres one thing the godfather has taught me, its that italians and blacks dont get along.
obviously that was an attempt to be funny, but in all seriousness my great grandpa was one of those guys who gets teh respectz from everyone, so i kinda have an idea of what the italian mentality was like back then. some people dont get over it, just like some people havent gotten over the american civil war
this is all just speculation of course.

Racism or not, they were wrong to kill the thief. If the thief attempted to use lethal force when resisting capture, then killing him in self-defence is justified. But from what I see the storeowners easily subdued him and spitefully killed him. Assholes.
Since the storeowners were still the "victims" of an attempted crime I guess they can't be imprisoned, but a hefty fine or a big compensation to the thief's family should be levied.
As for the racism, it's everywhere. Every country has locals who are intolerant of foreigners. It's just more pronounced in some countries than in others. From what I see, it looks like Italy is not a destination for me.

Unless you toured around the countryside, that's pretty much impossible.
And even there chances are that the nice italian cuisine the fancy italian waiter served you was cooked by immigrants.

Funfact about italy: Fascism is still alive and well even after 80+ years despite WWI, WWII and the EU. Telling the difference between the mafia and the government is almost impossible as what would be considered serious cases of corruption elsewhere, is just business as usual over here. Luckily, top researchers recently proved, that there is indeed a massive conspiracy of socially low ranking immigrants going on that caused and still causes the moral, economic and political downfall of the country. Therefore I'm sure those shopowners rightfully call themselves patriots as they are secretly hailed as such by a mayority of the populace and all of the government parties.
Honestly though, pretty fucking depressing.

If you say you have a stepfather they won't know what race he is.. because your stepfather would be in no way related to you :|

Also, bolded for lulz maximization.

Oh c'mon, do you actually feel you have to defend, at least in part, the insanity and prejudice of foreign right-wingers?
...
Wait, wait, you're telling me that xenophobia could not possibly cause the development of more superficial, race-based hatred?
What?
