Alright so, my parents are bugging the crap outta me about what I want for christmas. After much thought, I was considering maybe a PSP. I have the old school DS (one from when they first came out) and the games are so boring anymore and it seems like a lot are aimed at little kids. Im a fan of good rpgs and shooters, and it seems that the DS just doesnt have too many now. My question is, what would you guys go for? The PSP or the DS? And could you recommend some games if I do get the PSP. I definitely want Crisis Core and Valhalla Knights 2 if I get one.

For rpgs, I recommend the DS. It has some good choices like final fantasy games and chrono trigger, though I'm not so sure about shooters.

If by Final Fantasy games you mean any of the ones that run under the PS1 and down, then a modded PSP can play all of them.
A little modding, and a PSP can do so much more, you can run emulators on it, homebrew games, applications, etc.

I've got both a PSP and a DS, and and although the DS games are good at passing the time, I can come back to my PSP and always enjoy the experience.

Isn't the PSP unhackable after a certain official firmware?

No. As far as I know, all the firmwares have been unlocked.

Whats the chance of bricking a PSP? If it can be modded, I will mod it lol.

And I still think the DS just doesnt have all that great of RPGs. :/ Im also leaning towards the PSP for the graphics.

Resistance will be for the PSP to but the I'm not such a huge fan on shooters because the system only has 1 analog stick.

Can you find what is broken on it?

That is why you should not get a PSP. The DS is ok though it could be better its still superior to the PSP.

I think the only good thing a second analog would be is for fps genres.

I think I would have bought a PSP if they had at least moved the analog stick to the right side so you could use it like a standard game controller. That by itself would have made the system 10x better and open it up to so many more games.

Now that's a hand held gaming wonder. Can it run Halo:CE?

Sucks to be your poll. 3 3 3.
I would say get a PSP because of emulators but thats just because I put them on anything and everything I can.

Dont get either.

Psps suck.

i voted neither because i have never personally gotten much use out of hand held consoles except for on rare occasions when im in the car on a long trip, and usually i just plug my laptop into a cigarette lighter if thats the case. i have a ds, not a psp. i can honestly say that i havent gotten much use out of the ds. it serves as my alarm clock, and thats about it. i had alot of fun with wario ware touched, but the animal crossing for it is kinda meh, especially with the new one out for the wii (yes i like animal crossing).
from what iv seen and heard, the psp can run alot of windows based applications and emulators (correct me if im wrong). if you must get a hand held thing, get a psp.

Handheld gaming is dead imo.

You can buy a Max Media Dock for your DS which allows you to play emulators, homebrew, etc.

Ditch the PSP and buy an X360 for the same price (if you don't already have one). It'd be hard for me to choose one. If you already have a DS, get a PSP for games like Crisis Core and Chains of Olympus. I have neither but if I had a choice I'd go with a DS because I love how it's so small and compact. PSPs are nice but they are a bit big.

they seem the same size to me. but get a psp. it's like a labtop but just more...worst i guess. if u got a labtop then that's all the handheld gaming you NEED!

Save your money and get a laptop, a small, 12" monitor, touchscreen, laptop.

A friend of mine has one. If you are any kind of artist, it is a god send. You can get one used for under a grand I think. So, you just ask your parents for money, and save.

Alternatively, you could save for a car if you don't already have one.

In all honesty, I don't know any adults who own handheld consoles. So, if your aim is to get away from childish tendencies, then I would save for the long-term.

So yeah, my recommendation, a PSP, or a Pandora system. I'm definitely getting my hands on one of those later on. Maybe I'll learn how to program and make it a project to port Halo to it.

My thoughts exactly. I own an old school DS. Its control scheme is actually great for FPS's, just that the developers can't see that (they're blinded by the PSP's superior technical capabilities). Anyway there's a COD4 and BiA for the DS, both are decent and a good break from MP:H. I would've bought a PSP if it had two sticks or at least had the stick on the right.

I recommend the DS lite if and only if you want to get those accessories that only fit flush with the Lite. Otherwise, get neither, or get the PSP.

The PSP has GTA if you're interested, and its racing games pwn the hell out of the DS's racers (save for Mario Kart). If you don't already own a video MP3 player, the PSP is really well suited for video playback assuming you can find decent sales for the overpriced Memory Stick Duos.

I know you can surf the internet on both devices, but the DS's browser is so slow it's almost useless, while the PSP's browser is troublesome for address input using the analog nub.

Finally, if you find that you just don't really do much portable gaming at all(personally I do a lot of it, particularly during lunch at school and sometimes on the toilet or the bus), sell the old DS and get some extra money for something else. Merry Xmas too.

I see plenty of young adults (typically 20's) of all races playing portable consoles on the bus or the Skytrain or even while waiting for a movie to start if they're seated early. But there are plenty of gamers who don't (or they just use their cell phones and iPods).

lol, the PSP is a bit big, but if you wear a jacket most of the time (I would have to in BC, Canada) I'm sure the pockets can hold it securely. It won't fit into jeans pockets of course.

Note that a PSP is only really worth it if you put a custom firmware on it.

Just get $$$. That way you can decide what you want PAST Christmas, without being nagged til Christmas Eve.

Uhhh guys DS has emulators and homebrew software too, all you need is a micro SD adapter :|

e: I should also mention that some incredibly awesome guys ported Quake 1 and 2 to the DS, which work almost flawlessly. And some other guys did DOOM.

Get a DS. Then get an R4DS (http://r4ds.cn/). It makes it so that you can watch movies, run Linux, and load as many... *ahem*... homebrew games as your chosen MicroSD will hold.

I currently own a DS, a few good games, mostly for games. But the PSP is like a mini-laptop or somethin. So, a lot of options there.

I don't own either, but I've heard the DS is better. When I went to PAX like everyone had them... it was kind of creepy.
