Ever wanted to know how to have stairs in halo but without an collision plane? Well I have made a set of stairs for a current map I am working on. Don't ask what it is. Anyways with the stairs I do not have a collision plane and you can still walk up them with no problem, just the added feel to the camera tilting or slightly going up or down and with a split second of a stop between each step.

Um...well this is kinda pointless..but good job?
all you havta do is make the steps small enough for him to climb up..I believe in the original HEK docs, it even tells you the maxium hieght that he can step up..

The thing is my steps are over the height limit. That's the point of posting. I figured out how to make them and have them the height I want which for normal stairs is over the the height limit in HEK. Yet he still can walk up them with no problems.

Tbh I'd rather have the smoothness of a collision plane.

No they just have a bland metal material. No climbable features checked.

What's even the point? There's already a number of perfectly-functioning ways to make stairs. You even get the "camera effect" you talk about in the first post with the ladder system.

oh god this is dumb...just fucking say what you did, your not super cool, for doing something, and it's kinda childish how your just like "na na I'll never telll"
There's a number of things you could have done..altered the biped tag it's self to alter the hieght he can climb, coulda made him walk on walls, coulda made invis colision planes to help with the transistion, coulda made the surfact climbable...
So yea, not really seeing what's so amazing..
Anyways, I don't really care, nor is this intresting to me...

Why not just spline the steps then extrude the edges?
if smooth walking is what your worried about just put a ladder plane there, i dont see anything special about a new technique for making stair mesh.
Theres more versions on how to make steps than there are steps in a 24 storey building.

MC's step height is 10 units, the 45 degree (MC's max incline, unaltered) chamfer (not extrude frain) makes the height less than 10 units. The depth of the steps is >10. All this combined gives the "stairstep" look.
No big deal.

Anywho..from what I see, it's untextured steps...how that would MAKE me wana beta, is beyond me..
Or is your tactic, make it SEEM awesome so everyone will be curious..until they play and realize the only thing "special" was the steps themselfs...

Though I did miss the slight extrude (which is completely unnecessary), it still works the exact same way I said.

No one I know has wanted stairs like this. Where did you get the idea that many people did? Besides, the collision plane works more smoothly, and is better IMO.

Yeah the extruded stairs with no collision plane make it real bumpy, and it would be annoying in an actual game

And he did make the clip unbelievably short so you can't get a real feel for it. If I was showing it off I would have done a good 30 seconds of it so you can grasp it more.

It's his gloating, and acting like he accomplished this great feat, that irritates me...and how he has to like be all secretive like it's SO AMAZING he hasta make it all mysterious...
Modesty, and confidence all play thier respective roles, and something like this, I don't see as something to be overly-confident about, and see it as being egotistical..
But that's strictly my opinion of course

Idk, I just happened to think a lot of people would like realistic stairs more than fake stairs. Oh well, I was wrong. Also, in gameplay, I would want to get up the stairs fast as crazy instead of bumping up the stairs while being shot at by a pistol or sniper. =/

Interesting, nice stuff. If I ever made a map,I wouldnt make steps because a, it would be a pain to get to work, I dont wanna have to fiddle around with steps and b take up more polys than just a ramp. Although that said, your info helps me out more :) Cheers

You could've just said that it was a 007 mod instead of linking us to that pointless video. He lost all his files to the gov't for hacking? I seriously doubt that. If he were convicted as a hacker he would not be allowed to use a computer at all.

That video shows nothing. It's still the 10 second thing, you just extended it with music. The thing is you are trying to be sneaky with us, acting like the big guys thinking it will get us wondering what is going on, but that's not working in this case. That only works with people would have a reputation for great things. Therefore we expect great things from them and that's where anticipation comes from. If you are going to tease us you are going to need to show a lot more otherwise just be quiet about it and don't release something until something significant is ready to be shown.

I was on remote desktop and my friend was connected I walked away and he was screwing around on my computer I guess. I didn't even know I had those there I never do favorites.. Thanks Ill go remove those now...

You can recreate a logo with the Halo Font and Unicode.

Depends, is this going to be a 10 second clip of something that is made in photoshop/movie editor and has nothing really to do with Halo or of actual content? Try for the latter at least.

Seeing as this thread's about stairs and collision planes, perhaps I can get a bit of help.
As you can see, exhibit A.
A collision plane sitting on top of my stairs, linked to the frame, (*) material, tooled bitmaps but I still get open errors. Anybody have any idea why? It's seriously driving me nuts.
I'm willing to bet it's something so simple it'll make me look like an idiot.

Also make sure your shader file or bitmap file doesn't contain the symbols. It should just be the normal name.

Gah, it's still not working, I'm just about ready to give up. :\
I've tried just about everything I can think of, I even created a new .max file to export with (ignore the map name in the code below, couldn't think of anything) Bluestreak, as I usually use Blitzkrieg but it still doesn't work. It just gives me the following error when using Blustreak.

I cant scramble upon this error because I never get it, but I know it could amount up to a certain amount of things. It would help If I had contact with you outside of the forums. Seeing I could look into things more thoroughly..

Never mind boys, I created a new .max file to work around it, so it exports fine now. But for some reason the collision plane doesn't work, I think it's a problem with my shader, I'll continue working with it.

This method of stairs seems too overly complicated. I'm against realism in this engine anyway simply because the engine can't handle consistent realism. Hell, no engine seems to be able to handle consistent realism.
Bridging all of the gaps with playerclips works just fine imho. It doesn't hem up the player, it's simpler for a modeler, and it still lets projectiles through.
