View Full Version : So I have court tomorrow...

Atty
February 1st, 2009, 10:55 PM
At one o'clock tomorrow I'll be going before a judge for doing 104 in a 60mph zone.

Never been to court before or gotten a speeding ticket, not sure what I'm going to do.

Any words of wisdom?

Don't be a smart ass. That's just something you want to do. The judges can be real asses.

Just listen to details and make sure you don't make things sound wrong.

Answer directly and don't speak out of turn. They will watch for anything to charge you.

Why the hell did you drive 104 in a 60 MPH speed zone anyways?

DaaxGhost

I do it alot. =D

Not really 104. more like 95... I'm safer

What DarkHalo said don't speak out of turn, they like to nit-pick things you do and enjoy to make you frustrated.

You deserved it, enough said. Breaking the speed limit on a public road = no no. If you want to do that go to a track or an airstrip.

Just do whatever the judge says (probably won't be too bad if it's a first offence), and don't ever try it again.

Best thing I can recommend is to man up to your mistake. Considering this is your first offense, the judge might be more lenient on his/her ruling.

I was on the parkway, in the middle of the night, absolutely no one else was on the road.

Anyway, I didn't realize how fast I was going at first, was driving a car for the first time, twin turbo BMW, so it got up there in speed quite quickly. Anyway, I'm not too worried.

Don't be such a tight ass. He probably knows for himself now that it's a "no no." He doesn't need you telling him that.

Anyway yeah, given that it's your first offense it should be fine.

If it's a public road you can never be sure no one is around.

;)

But yeah, I think Atty will be fine (at least he shouldn't lose his license), just start looking at your speedo periodically if you find yourself speeding without realizing it.

Is it that new 3.0L straight-six producing 300 hp? My friend's dad drives a 535xi with that engine, total pwnage, no need for V8s anymore.

xD thats the best idea I ever heard... i got a black car too, actually i heard of someone doing something simillar recently in like a blacked-out Corvette on the highway near us really late at night (cop would catch something on radar moving really fast but never see it only heard it), one night they decided to set up tire spikes, guess he didnt see that one coming.

but yeah... I got court on wed and my situation is worse, I got caught with some of the good stuff/green stuff/marry jane/herb (lawl) not speeding though, its bullshit tbh. End of the month and my license plate light out was out, got pulled over, cop saw it on the seat (dint kno it was there a friend of mine spilt it, under a tenth of a gram basically). It looked like something air currents could've blown in through my window if it was open... plus an empty pack of rolling papers, and a can (which shudnt have been in my fuken car...) basically i screwed my self with careless mistakes...

E: also... yea... "didn't realize what speed you were going"... in that kind of car lmao thats a good one, tbh if I was that judge and that was what you told me, Id be like what do you think I am an idiot. If hes really an ass he'll think your insulting his intelligence.

Tbh ive never been to court for a speeding ticket (actually never been to court at all), Im just using common sense, idk it might work to say that. Late at night, long drive, no one around to gauge my speed, wasn't watching my speedometer, then again not watching your speedometer is probably considered driving wrecklessly.

While were talking about speeding... I've already taken my car to the govenor(sp?), it goes up to like 115ish then drops me back down to 80 lol.

I have a black car too...but my eyes aren't telescopes. I could be going super fast and then suddenly I see a pedestrian or a parked car, and there may not be enough distance to stop in time (simple physics - the faster you go, the more distance you need to cover to come to a stop, and the faster you go, the less chance you and your vehicle have of surviving a collision). I'm aware that speeding usually isn't the direct cause of an accident, but a crash at high speed is obviously worse than a crash at low speed. In Vancouver I've personally witnessed a Mercedes exceeding 80 km/h on a 50 km/h city road, the path ahead of him appeared to be clear, but then another car ahead of the Mercedes braked to avoid a jaywalker, the Mercedes slammed into the back of that car because it couldn't stop in time (the road was a bit hilly, the Mercedes driver probably couldn't see the car ahead soon enough). So some innocent dude got his property damaged just because a rich asshole doesn't respect traffic laws.

Besides, 60 miles per hour (around 96 km/h) is faster than Vancouver's maximum speed limit of 90 km/h. So be happy you're allowed to go as fast as 60 in the first place.

Still Atty, your BMW is awesome, just pull up Google Maps and find the nearest clear airstrip (there are quite a few in Orlando, FL, trivial note) next time you wanna speed.

^ ... im not even gonna say anything..

Maybe this is what they mean when they talk about people from New Jersey, tbh I consider my self to be one of the more chill people around here though.

e: also... im not sure what the consequenses of speeding driving or driving fast on an airstrip around here would be... but im pretty sure you'd get hit with trespassing at least, theres an airstrip near me actually. I'm positive someone would call the cops if they heard people ripping down it though (its not even really close to houses, but I'm pretty sure it'd happen, not to mention cops have nothing better to do around here and they'd love to catch someone stupid enough to do this) you live in canada right, rules are a bit different.

Six years ago, I think my dad got pulled over by the cops for going 8 mph over the limit (in a 200-hp Honda minivan nonetheless, hard to believe a minivan goes that fast huh), but he was just given a warning.

Never been involved in even one accident before. It's called drive safely. As for parking, "do unto others as they would do unto you." That means stay in the center of your lot, don't intrude onto adjacent lots or onto the outer path, super easy to do. Hate those big trucks that occupy 1 1/3 parking spaces at the mall.

They don't have to show up unless you motion for an expert witness. Then they are obligated to attend the hearing. So when they don't show when their supposed to, the ticket is thrown out. Ive done it twice. It works 95% of the time.

I was reading this joke blog my friend sent to me, about people all over the elitist country of Singapore who don't know two hoots about how to park their cars.

I was ROFL'ing, until I came across an April 2006 entry that showed my grandfather's car. The location was even specified - I then realized that on that day (I was on vacation in Singapore for spring break, which had been postponed from March due to a BC teacher's strike), the entire family went for a reunion lunch at a restaurant in the mall. My grandfather and I happened to be sitting in the backseat of his BMW 745 Li, which was driven by one of my uncles (my grandpa was 74 years old then and decided he was too old to drive anymore). The license plate number matches perfectly.

Crimes committed:
1. The car was sticking out of the lot, which posed a mild obstruction to other drivers in the carpark.
2. The car was parking on two lots at the same time.
3. One of the parking lots was for the disabled...I don't recall anyone in my family having to be confined to a wheelchair.

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1297/2404/320/SGB9888C-Centrepoint-2006_04_16.jpg
Here's another cuckoo-brained BMW driver. New car, so he prefers not to get it dented at the back, but leaves the front out of the car park lot far enough that any passing vehicle can crash into it. The TP should review their driving test passing standards - this blog is definately showing a serious lapse in the parking skills of many drivers.

Taken at Centrepoint carpark on 16 April 2006 at about 1:45pm.
I was shocked and completely taken aback to find that a relative's personal car had been photographed for the sake of going onto "Parking Idiots." And yes, my uncle is buying his head in sand of shame.

I agree that some BMW drivers are annoying and do not pay attention all of the time while driving. I also dislike people who don't follow the speed limit decently and ride your ass all the way down a hill. Had to put on my blinker a kilometer from my house before the guy started to even slow down.

But if you ever say or do anything that the judge finds out of line, he'll put you in contempt in a second. They want money and probably have no patience around this time.

Wrong. A minivan can go fast quite easily, and it is also more massive than a sports car, thus making it more dangerous should it collide with something. For somebody with basic knowledge of physics, I'm surprised you didn't pick up on that.

lol you should try driving the minivan I used to have, 200 horsepower, often carried lots of cargo too. It took like almost 10 seconds to get to 60, hence for me it would be nearly impossible to get to dangerous speeds. It was a 2001 Honda Odyssey btw, used in California. Sports cars reach 60 in half the time, hence I consider them greater threats. And in downtown San Jose or San Francisco traffic, this minivan will never get a chance to speed.

I know how to drive (17, have an N license) and I do it safely, partly because my road test evaluator (a Pakistani-Canadian) was ultra strict. Here's my car btw (since my parents very rarely let me use theirs):

The point of his post was that minivans are more dangerous - even at lower speeds - than sportscars. Any speed is "dangerous" with something that large.
