On average how long does each one of these take you? I'm an impatient artist, I have a hard time drawing things long-form, unless i'm in a class.

Those are fairly quick sketches, I highly doubt she did them all at once except maybe for the arm study, so if you meant in total it would probably be a longer time, but for each little one I would go with anywhere under 15 minutes.
bapsi
December 31st, 2009, 07:55 PM
yeah, they were all done at once.
each little sketch took me under 5 minutes, each arm study, maybe 2 minutes or so each. about 10, if you count the side arm drawings i did after each study to try and make sure the info sunk in.
each element of the little ochre line drawings less than a minute each maybe.

Damn, stuff like that would take me ages to get right. I have a habit of drawing, then erasing once I realize the proportions are wrong, then drawing, then erasing again. My work gets smudgy. Good thing I got this tablet, then. How do you make sure your proportions stay consistent while you're filling out a piece?
bapsi
January 1st, 2010, 08:30 AM
I kinda just eyeball the proportions. o_o
unless you're drawing a front view in all of your figures, it's tough to check proportion with something like that 8-heads-tall rule, so i try not to depend on anything like that.
i think the contour life drawings kinda helped with getting them right the first time more often while drawing. That and drawing with a pen instead of a pencil or anything else erasable.

I don't want to lecture you as it makes me feel like a hypocrite since I kind of suck, but pretty much shadows are a darker form of the same color (obviously) mixed with the dominant color source in the environment. So lets say this apple is outside, the shadow would be a mix of the red hue plus a tad bit of blue. Also depending on the surface it is sitting on, the sky emits a light, so the apple would have some light blue reflections, but note that the light blue can not be any lighter then the main light source. at the top of the shadow, seeing as this is rounded, the light osurce from the sky is hitting one side while the sun is hitting the other, so the darkest part is technically is the midpoint between these two light sources, basically right when the shadow begins. It is not very noticeable unless shown in a white light area on a oclorless ball, but it is there none the less. The very bottom of the apple should be basically more dark blue then red contrary to the upper portions, as no actual light source is getting there to reflect the red to you, but the blue sky permeates the whole atmosphere so you still get that lbueish tinge. (note there still is SOME dark red, just a lot less then the other areas) hope this helps, it kind of sounds ocnfusing without images, and you probably know all this, but still worth a shot to help a fellow artist.
edit- from my observations this is inside, generally yellow indoor lights give off purple shadows.

I've never seen my yellowish indoor lights give off even a dark/pale shade of purple shadow, it's always been actually slightly green. And I know I'm not colour-blind.

I did it in a rush and used a dynamic field, but in sense, this is how shadows work. Also note that the darkest shadow is only as dark as your darkest value, so adjust your field as needed.

in all honesty, i had a little trouble and got lazy when the time came to mix color for the shadowed parts of the apple's forms.

Timo, I do not spout out shit if that is what you are implying. Seeing as most people on here will hunt your ass down if you say something false, I tend to tell the truth.
edit- ignore the shitty photo, just look at the shadows behind the poppies. It is a known fact that shadows take on colors timo, with blue being the dominant one in nature other then green through transparent leaves. Also the green you see is actaully a weak yellow in the center of the shadow from reflective light off of the other surfaces in your room but the edges of the shadows and shadows on smooth things such as faces indoors tend to be purple. (note the word tend)

Size doesn't really make a difference in how good it is, its the same tech in them and it just depends on what you're working with. Smaller tablets allow you to move faster than you would with my 6x11 (which, after a year of owning, I am finally learning to do actual drawing with)
ExAm

This happens to me all the time, sometimes I'll be doing a piece and I'll think its going fantastic and then I draw something that looks like a cartoon and have to start over since I'm using a lot of charcoal right now. Probably doesn't help that I've only been doing any actual drawing for a couple years now. Classes at ringling did help a lot though.

Screw it, I'm going to bed. Bad artist days only get worse through sleep deprivation.
I can totally relate to that. x__x though after the two-day mark of no sleeping you reach the fabled dgaf mode that can do wonders to your creativity if you can hold your head up long enough to let it manifest

July 23rd, 2010, 04:48 AM
I wish I could sketch people properly. My process needs some major revision and a whopping injection of actual art classes. When I sketch, I will obsess over every line as if I'm inking already, resulting in poor forms until I spend an hour fixing it. It's a curse ):
bapsi
July 25th, 2010, 04:03 AM
yeah. being shy with your lines can be bad when doing figure drawings.
something as quick as a sweeping gestural line can do wonders to the flow and believability of your figures.
a good example I can show you is by one of my concept artist idols, Robogabo. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2814860#post2814860)
http://www.robogabo.com/ca/exsb/wgykxxxtgc.jpg
http://www.robogabo.com/ca/exsb/eqha9090.jpg
There are loads of ways to express form in a drawing, but I think one very effective way is to hatch across the form like Bjorn Hurri (http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=255&page=7) shows here.
http://a.imageshack.us/img707/6697/augustpaper16jpg.jpghttp://a.imageshack.us/img267/8084/augustpaper31jpg.jpg
Another useful way to go about it is to use lighting. Drop shadows can do a good job of showing depth if used right too.

Damn, I wish I could do that. Years of mechanical drafting classes taught me to draw very precise, straight lines. I've been trying some figure drawing, but it's really hard to unlearn my desire to be exact. It's ironic how trying to be exact tends to make things look worse, not better.
