Still can't run Crysis at full settings? You're far from alone. You're also about to be left in technology's dust, as developers Crytek (http://kotaku.com/tag/crytek/) have announced a new game engine. The successor to the company's current engine, CryENGINE 2 has been dubbed - wait for it - CryENGINE 3 (http://kotaku.com/tag/cryengine-3/), and settles our questions over what that new logo was for (http://kotaku.com/5164455/crytek-putting-on-a-warface). It also boasts that it's not only ready for the current generation of hardware - including, for the first time, PS3 & 360 - but the next generation as well, boasting of "scalable computation and graphics for all major upcoming platforms".
Sounds neat. Also sounds, knowing Crytek's track record for ridiculously inaccessible graphics settings, entirely plausible.
No pics or demo reels just yet; we'll have to wait until GDC in a couple of weeks for those.

And here I was thinking I wanted to buy a new PC now...anything short of a GTX295 or HD4870 X2 will not run this at high settings very well, let alone at maximum.

Wow, this sounds awesome. What does it mean by new platforms? I thought there was only the PC, 360, and PS3 that can handle stuff like this.. :o

New platforms as in the PS4, Xbox 1080, and maybe even the Wii 2 (all assumed names).

And maybe this will give me reason to hold off my new PC for a few months and build it this summer instead of this month (I'll have more money to build it with this summer, so it will hopefully be more powerful, aka powerful enough to run a game using this engine).

Sweet. I'm intrigued to see what they can accomplish with this engine- how much they can optimize it, how much performance they can squeeze out of it while still keeping it developer friendly and cross-platform and scalable to a wide range of hardware capabilities.

What the fuck, there will never be sufficient enough hardware to run a CE3 at launch, especially with ATI and Nvidia rebranding their old video cards these days.

You're speaking out of ignorance which is the equivalent of gargling with human feces and trying to talk at the same time. Please stop, thank you.

Xbox 1080? Fuck that, next gen should use radians. Xbox 6π ftw

But seriously, I hope that having to work with the 360/PS3 will make them think twice before making impossible to reach graphic settings.

Hoorah! I totally agree with this, honestly. That would actually be a pretty cool looking name on a box, and they could do something cool looking for a logo.

OH GOD. MEMORIES OF TRIGONOMETRY RETURNING. :gonk:

While it seems early, it does line up chronologically.

-Far Cry released in '04
-Crysis/CE2 announced '06
-Crysis released in '07
-CE3/Crysis 2 (hopefully) announced in '09

Regardless, I was hoping we'd see more of CE2, since it looks so damn nice, and I really hope the new console focus doesn't cause Crytek to go the way of Epic and UE3.

So, by the way things look, I'm guessing that my HD4850 will give me nice graphics on medium-low in Crysis 2. :)

Warhead was released in 08, which used a much more optimized version of CryEngine2.

Just throwing that out there.

Xbox 6π ftw

Is that pi or is that really a Cyrillic Pe? It looks more like the latter...

Also, ATi isn't re-branding its cards. HD4000 are their own series, unlike the GTS and GT series cards from nVidia which are re-branded and die-shrunk G92's, 94's, and 96b's.

I'd bet there'd be a lot of "hurr durr its the exbox 3 not the exbox 6 :downs:"

But I fully support any use of π and a non-degree format (Huh, only works in Arial)

Radians are silly, half a circle shouldn't be a non-terminating decimal number of units.

Well, then you can reply "hurr durr the 360 was the exbox 2 not the exbox after the exbox 359 :downs:"

Degrees are silly, a half circle shouldn't be measured by a completely arbitrary and oddball set of numbers. Pi is a set value, a universal. Degrees are something completely made up and are related to how we tell time, which is also completely made up.
