For the first time ever, I reinstalled Ubuntu. This laptop has been through every beta and alpha release of Ubuntu since Feisty, so it's been bogged down considerably.
Now it's nice and clean and even boots in 20 seconds (http://ogunderground.com/gallery.php?do=img&i=8).

Ignorance detected! As long as the video chip running in your laptop is a GMA 950 or above, Ubuntu should work fine. I bet your laptop is using a low-end ATi integrated graphics chipset. Why single out ATi and not nVidia? They both offer low-end graphics options for laptops yielding similar performance. It's your own fault you didn't buy a laptop with better graphic capabilities. Also, I'm not exactly sure what you're doing with Ubuntu (other than enabling enhanced effects) to require more than what you have.

pretty much just better overall performance and compatibility, but there are other changes, cosmetic and functional.
