View Full Version : Feeling a bit... disconnected...

Right now I'm sitting at my computer, the screen is about two feet away from me, but it feels like it's about a mile away. If I look around, get up, walk around, etc, the feeling goes away, but if I'm looking at my screen, desk, or keyboard I start tripping out. I usually also get this when I get a fever; I'll be laying in bed feeling like shit and all of a sudden the room feels huge but claustrophobic at the same time.

Is there some sort of medical/psychological/scientific term for this feeling? I get it every now and then, but I can't quite pinpoint what causes it. I've been playing Rock Band 2 since yesterday night (yes I got sleep) and then driving around on the highway for most of the day. Last time I remember getting this was one night I was driving home through some fucking B-horror flick style fog.

Not worried I'm getting sick/dying/going insane or anything, just wondering if this has a name and if anyone else gets this.

This happens to me sometimes. No idea what it's called or how it's caused.

I'd suspect allergies. I'm getting the same thing (or a cold), and downing almost a box of Kleenex a day to keep my nose unblocked. Plus that tunnel feeling, which makes me a bit impulsive (probably because I don't connect what I'm doing to me).

As it turns out I bought a tub of ice cream on the way past a 7-11 and I have no clue why. I don't even like ice cream that much :/

I don't feel tired, though people mentioning sleep now reminds me that I'm currently running on 6 hours of it...

Even if you were joking, I'll make it clear that I am completely clean and not under the influence of anything (except maybe caffeine, just had a huge coca-cola slurpee...). I do not do drugs.

Same thing happens to me. What I do is sit up or stand up, take a deep breathe and get a drink of cold water, and it wears right off.

Only happens to me every now and then. My chiropractor says it has to do with my posture in my chair.

Vertigo perhaps, or eyestrain? Your sinuses could be doing that to you.

If it's just your eyes not focusing right, you could try what I do. Whenever I have trouble focusing or perceiving distances (which is often, as my eyes are unable to focus right- long story), I put my finger in front of my eyes and move it closer and further from my face, going from about arm's length to a couple of inches away, keeping my eyes focused on it. It either helps me focus, or gives me a headache.

Eye strain. The same thing happened to me, so make sure you alleviate the problem by have other light sources on and taking breaks. Seriously, it sounds stupid, but it works.

And more sleep.

This feeling passed shortly after I posted the thread. I didn't really do anything, I just keept looking around and it kinda just wore off.

Isn't eye strain also supposed to be painful or also be associated with headaches? I felt totally normal besides this; no pain, fatigue, depression, nothing on my mind, I was just trippin'.

Nope, I'm focused on whatever I'm looking at.

I'm no hypochondriac. ;) This has happened many times before, it just started again while I was here and I never knew what it was so I wanted to see if anyone else knew since it's not something I could really type into ask.com.

My chiropractor
Why would you listen to somebody like that.

Also yeah, I get this. I just take a few deep breaths and it goes away.

E:

Low blood Iron.
Adult males recycle close to 100% of their blood iron, so unless p0lar has not eaten for a few months he should be ok on that front.

Because Chiropractors actually work wonders for certain things. I only listen to them about things such as stretching and what to do if I pulled or strained something though. They're "adjustments" are great if you dislocate, pull, or strain something, other than that they're useless.

My mom believes that they also help with colds/medical things as well, but that just reinforces my belief that she's slow...

I probably haven't eaten right in a few months, but I hardly think I'm anemic, just out of shape. :)

Go eat a nice Lobster dinner.

That's my solution to all food related issues. Seafood fixes everything.

If you pulled a muscle or strained something, you should see a physician. A chiropractor has no medical degree, and honestly shouldn't be manipulating anything, or giving you advice.

Also, a small portion of chiropractors actually believe that all illness is a result of "healthy energy" being blocked along the spine, so your mother might have been bullshitted by some local chiropractor into believing it. The general public just assume its another type of doctor, and thus do not care to investigate the claims, though.

Chiropractor thread takeover~

Well, if you've not been eating right and this is a recent thing, try changing your diet. Nothing drastic, just add some fruit.

Or lobster.

Except they do actually help after straining something, personal experience bro. My Chiropractor also HAS a medical doctorate, so... Don't knock it until you try it?

I have the same problem!!! I don't get it anymore, I figured out what causes it for me. It happens when I worry, A LOT. So once I figured that out I could reverse it and forget about it. I don't know if you're the same.

I thought I was the only one who got this! Its nice to know I'm not alone.

My physician has a medical degree. As do all physicians. The same standards do not apply to chiropractors, and thus, in general, they are a less safe - sometimes dangerous - choice.

Also one day my neck hurt so I went to the chiropractor and he fiddled with my spine, and then I got a stroke, personal experience bro :anecdotalevidence: (http://www.theness.com/neurologicablog/?p=316)

You didn't see the "medical" part of the message I wrote I guess. He's got all the requirements to be an actual doctor, but he's chosen to take the chiropractic road instead, most likely because it pays better. Either way, good chiropractors are good.

So again, don't knock it until you try it.

kthx.

I get this every once and a while, too. I think it's just called being light headed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightheadedness) Also happened when I went on a Guitar Hero 3 spree, but that came from bright colored things moving fast down the screen, and it seemed odd looking at anything not moving anymore.

If your chiropractor has a medical degree, fine.

But in response to your "don't knock it until you try it":
Why are you taking your chiropractor as an example of all chiropractors? They are much more loosely regulated than real doctors, and don't actually need a medical degree. The fact that your chiropractor has one is entirely anecdotal.

Sometimes, like, I'll be looking at my hands and I'll be like, aaaah, my hands are fucking huge, man, my hands are so big!

And I say that in all seriousness.

It's crazy, when you think about it- your hands touch everything but themselves!
They call 'em fingers, but you never see 'em fing. Owait, there they go.
