I'm in a game character creation class... so I have to make a character. I'm taking you guys along for the ride.

Basically, we started out having to create a concept for a character... my first idea got shot down about a week into the class, so I'm starting over. My new design is a guy that works at a drive up smoothie shack in the future.

I still have to do a top view and a 3/4 view of him before they'll let me start modeling.

I might put a little paper hat on him too... I'm not sure yet.

And as for weird image sizes... they're done at 300 DPI on an 8X11 inch photoshop document... I took screenshots of those and posted it rather than the stupid huge image that I had to make lol.

I like it. How far in the future? And where? This looks like tropical wear.

In highschool I had an overshirt that had a stain on one sleeve so I cut it off and only had the left sleeve for the shirt.

@ Snaf

I have no idea how to do decent hair cards and I'm going to have to texture and rig this guy. I was thinking about doing some crazy hair but I dunno if I'll have the time for it all. Plus, if I have a silly little paper hat on him then I think it'll help that out a bit silhouette wise anyhow.

time frame wise, I was thinking about 100 years in the future

Got the top and the 3/4 shot done. I'm going to rework the feet in the front and the top views, and play with the legs a bit on the front.

I really like the concept actually. Its not your typical game character with buff muscles and really dirty and grimy. Its a clean cut character with a unique style.

Not much, but I started blocking him out today.

I hate modeling faces/heads.

E: just took screengrabs of the viewport because... didn't care to hit render.

Nah, the render button didn't work haha so I didn't care to investigate... plus you can't see wires in Maya's renders lol

Spent some time on his head today, made some hands that I'm not happy with at all (Maya crashed roughly seven times while making them...)

I'm not happy with the arms, and I still have to make the sleeve for the right arm. I'm not sure how I'm going to do the holes in the sleeve and pantleg yet.... if I'm going to do it with mesh or with alpha. Originally I was planning on doing it with mesh, but I don't know how weird that will be to paint weights for so I'm a bit worried about that.

The pants still need a ton of work, and the chest I'm not really going to model anything into, that'll all be in the normals. I don't know how I feel about the feet, they're not really the center of attention on this guy so I don't wanna mess around too much with em, but at the same time... they look funny to me. I dunno.

I got a little bit more work done on him.... turned him in about two hours ago.

I'm not pleased with the normal map for the shirt or pants, the belt buckle I didn't even take into zbrush, and I had a really weird seam on his chest on the normal map... so I tried painting it out... but painting a normal map is weird... so... yea.

I'm going to rig him with a really simple rig later tonight.... but... yar.

He's 6114 triangles btw.

Llama Juice

.... photoshop? lol

I sketched it out, then went back over it and cleaned up the lines to make em pretty. You can see in my colored one I didn't bother to clean up my lines so it's a bit messy... but... yea. *shrug*

My rig was pretty horrid, so... I'm not even going to bother posting pictures of the silly pose I put him in.... I might make a new rig for him later, but I just didn't do a good job on this one and my weight painting skills are... non existent soo... yea. haha.

I doubt this thread will see much more progress though, so... yea. /FIN

So, like, are there any good character modeling tuts out there? All I can find are gun/weapon tuts.

Character modeling's always something I wanted to try

i suggest you study some basic human anatomy after this project.
aside from that, i think you're doing well with it.
awaiting your next update.

Did you have to do any research for this? A friend of mine is doing a character design course.

Gotta admit it doesnt look very futuristic, more like a style from the past. You have good potential LJ.

Nah, the class was pretty much "Draw a character, give him a story, then make him in 3D."

The class was more about the process and being able to create a character "physically" rather than the story behind him. As for the futuristic/past look stuff with him... The asymmetry in the clothes design was what I had in mind to make it futuristic. If I would have went with darker colors I think it would have pushed that more, but he's at a smoothie shop... so I wanted something light and desaturated because... that just seems like a fast food thing to do IMO.

I'm not into character modeling (which... judging by my latest stuff in the quick WIP thread thing shows otherwise.. but... yar that's different haha) so this class was just kinda a pain for me... but it got me more familiar with zbrush and how to transfer the high poly geo to a normal map and such so... that's good.

This month I'll be making a new thread for my current project which is a western style environment in UT3(like a homestead/farm setting type thing) and I plan on making that look a lot better than my other UT3 level that I did for my Level Design class... but... that's for another thread.
