View Full Version : "building" a sniper : )

Yes this deserves a thread. prick.
Step 1: cut a hole in the bo-...Get scope
1940 production PU Scopes are difficult to come by these days. Especially in good condition. Plus when you do find one, you're lookin at $350+ (worth more then the rifle they mount on). Well about a week ago i was browsing gunbroker.com and came across quite a nice looking PU. Authentic 1943 (or early 44, the A prefix was switched after early 44) Russian PU sniper scope. So I decided for shits and gigs, why not "build" a ww2 russian sniper.
Well, $373 later, step 1 complete
the 19X65 stands for inspection and repair in 1965

Next to come is a 91/30 Mosin Nagant followed by tap kit and screws, then of course a bent bolt and leather lens caps for final touches.
Feel free to post any odd things you collect or in are in the process of building >_>

Is it just a straight infantry rifle, or an ex-sniper? The infantry rifles can be rather inconsistent when it comes to build quality and accuracy, but the ex-snipers (a little pricier and rarer) were converted because they only just fell below the very high standard set for sniper rifles. If I was to actually build a 91/30 sniper (and damn do I ever want to), I'd look for one of them.
PenGuin1362
June 3rd, 2009, 11:31 PM
unfortunately ex-snipers are hard to come by now. The few I found had shitty stocks, bore, or receiver. and the ones that didn't, like you said were pricey.
What makes the ex-snipers better is they were counter-bored, where as most infantry rifles weren't. the rifle i'm looking at is not counter-bored so it's accuracy will not be up to par with an ex-sniper. Perhaps if i could fine one in as nice condition i might grab it. A lot of the stocks on ex-snipers were cut off in large sections to make replacing the segment where the scope was easier, so adding the scope back on will make the stock look fuglier, and perhaps more prone to cracking.

Phase II of operation build russian sniper complete. Commence acquisition of bent bolt.
Finally got it in today. 1943 M91/30 Mosin Nagant. Excellent bore, came with all WW2 sling, oil can, and bayonet. Ammo pouches are post war. Now just to buy a bent bolt and begin mounting the scope :iamafag:

I'd shoot the rifle without the scope first just to see if it has any accuracy. Alot of Nagants are in pretty poor shape, as in ugly bores that have mostly been shot out. Also, a sniper rifle is going to be useless unless you handload or know of a good source of good 7.62x54R ammo. The majority of what's available is pretty shitty, especially the cheap surplus stuff. And if you roll your in you can make the loads tailored for your particular rifle.

You're talking to someone who knows more about guns then is mentally healthy. First of all I have examined the bore myself and it is in excellent condition, in fact better then my M44 Nagant which still hits with half inch or less grouping. Its accuracy is phenomenal. So i think it's safe to say this one will do fine. Also there is a local firearm shop that buys very high quality 7.62x54r ammo which is where i get my ammo from.
I don't fuck around, if i'm buyin a rifle it's going to be in damn good shape.
EDIT: this rifle has also been counterbored which actually increases the accuracy of the rifle

Good. I wasn't trying to be critical, I was just trying to be helpful. I too know quite a bit about guns, andf its good to see someone who knows what hes doing.
What brand is the ammo? Partizan or Sellier or what? Even if its of good quality, I would still recommend handloading. Its alot of fun, usually costs less than factory loads (unless its Bear or Wolf) and you get a much wider bullet selection.

Partizan. Out of the ammo i've bought I like theirs the best. I would love to hand load because i know it costs a shit ton less. but i don't go shooting enough at this point in time where the investment in the equipment would not really be beneficial right now.

The XM-8 was actually a component that came off of the XM29 OICW. The US military realized that the components would develop better separate before being put together.
rossmum
July 24th, 2009, 11:06 PM
The XM-8 was actually just a shittified version of the G36. It wasn't as bad as people like to make out, but it was a complete waste of time and money. The G36 is a solid rifle and, unlike the XM-8, it had a standard attachment system. The one on the XM8 would require a whole new set of equipment, which is just ridiculous.
Since you guys have brought the OICW up, though... check out the AICW. As awesome as Metal Storm is, I don't really want to be lugging a bulky, 16-lb. rifle about the bush. With any luck they'll cancel it (if they haven't already).

Yes, the XM-8 was based on the G36, but it was intended originally to be only a component of the OICW. Thats what lead to part of its development ending, because the contract that H&K had won wasn't for individual weaopns, it was for the combined weapon, which caused some other company (cant remember who just now) to file a lawsuit. Thats what ended its developement.
And in the cae of it being a shittified version, thats somewhat true, but I dont really like the G36 anyways. A solid performer under ideal conditions it may be, but under I have heard of parts breaking from being dropped in the heat or the cold. It is very reliable for fighting in Europe, but in the deserts and jungles I do not believe it to be rugged enough. Say what you will of the M-16 jamming (which is very true, although it is not as common of an occurance nowadays), it can take some serious physical abuse. Thats why I really like the HK-416 and Ruger SR-556. The piston rod combined with the aluminum/steel frame seemsto be a winner to me, instead of the plastics that the XM-8 and G36 are primarily composed of. tl;dr
