View Full Version : [WIP] Destiny - box maps are awesome!

The inspiration for the level should be obvious. I'm bored of making and seeing regular Forerunner architecture, so I went for something completely different. I also wanted to try creating a map without a starting plan, to see what I end up with. In addition, I want to do something that's not a CMT SP bsp for a change.

Pics are spoilered. I've only made a few structures so far, and I just have these current ones floating about to test their size.

It might end up being awful, but at least it will have been an interesting experiment for me.

^ yeah, me too, i haven't really played it since i beat it. Tbh, though, they should have put an editor in the game to make your own tracks, would have given the game so much replay value.

Looks really cool though Arteen. Will there be teleporters between the platforms or will they be connected.

If it had, you know, online multiplayer and maybe some coop, it would have been totally worth it.

No teleporters. I want the player to be able to reach every other part of the map without relying on teleportation. Although it's a moot point with my current layout.

I ended up adding so much stuff to one of the areas that it became complex enough to be its own map. The other structures are still floating around, but they're inaccessible.

I'm trying to tweak the shaders, especially the glass, which becomes bright white at some angles. The sky's a bit boring, too. I want to add more simple shapes floating in the sky, like in the ME DLC, for aesthetics. I also want to be crazy (for me) and actually test the map with other people before releasing it. Hopefully it's a fun asymmetric, close-quarters map.

Sign me up. Also, strike what I said earlier about making every weapon red. Make each individual one its own color, and have their spawn areas reflect that color.

Maybe give some blocks some reflection and transparency to spice it up, so everything doesnt look so.. dull

I like this a lot. The colors and stuff reminds me so much of a cartoon i use to watch, forgot what it was though. Sign me up for some testing.

Wow. I love the surrealistic style. Usually Halo maps try to be at least somewhat realistic, but this is just... cool. :)

Looks like some Quake3/Warsow trick jumping track. I like how it has some Halo-like shapes to keep it, well, Halo.

Mirrors edge's DLC was the best.
Looks okay so far.

Imo you are off from the theme of the ME maps.
Usually it was white and some other color.
And all the structures that were a different color had a similar shape or design.

You just have a bunch of white and colored structures.

I'm not trying to emulate Mirror's Edge perfectly. White plus a single color or two is fine for the DLC, since it's linear. But since this is a multiplayer map, I decided to use multiple colors for the map so that each area is distinct and easily recognizable. A map like this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Arteen/destinywip_021.jpg) (compared to this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Arteen/destinywip_015.jpg)) would be even more confusing to navigate, and the different portions of the map wouldn't be easily distinguishable from each other.

I never showed off anything. I never intended to. Mirror's edge's lighting (http://www.illuminatelabs.com/products/beast) is interesting to me which is why I posted my 2 cents of information about it. Stop trying to start something over nothing.

I didn't post a thing about my method. Stop trying to troll over something that never happened. I never intended ANYTHING of the sort. You continue to see the worse out of everything I do.
If your next post is going to advance this argument in any way then stop posting. This thread is about Arteen's map and our opinion of it.

You constantly bring up lightmap discussions and then offer to create lightmaps externally for maps. When people do take the offer you just half ass it, call it amazing, and try doing this cycle over again.

The servers up, but it needs to restart or something cuase there's a bunch of vehicles for stunts that we were playing with.

I was thinking that they orbit around the map like the asteroid belt would. And have certain rows of boxes spin at different speeds. A cool idea. And baking an AO map could make up for the dynamic lighting.

I joined but there was no one in it at the time, and I was lagging like a mo-fo, so I just tested it in my own server for a bit. It would have been nice to see how it played though.

Everything will be what I usually use, so it'll still have Spartans and play normally.

I think the cubes look best static, so no rotation.

The beta went well, so I only have a few changes to make before I can release the final. I think the map turned out nicely, especially for less than week of work.

Well my thoughts:
You are right about the same colors thing, but if you remember mirrors edge, they use colors for similar shapes.

Yellow is usually angular boxes.
Red is usually long stretches or tall obelisks, things like that. And they also had glass in them sometimes, in case you wanted to do that but thought it was non-mirrors edgey.

E: after watching the video, you are doing this DAMN well.
Ex2:

Actually masters and party, if he hadn't mentioned this I would have. That's the only thing that is off.

If I make another map like the one I had planned, I'll look into keeping geometry and colors more consistent. I think the variety works for this small map, though. As for lighting, I'll mess around with the lightmaps, but I think the map looks nice already. The lighting is the last thing I have to do.
