Your UV job is atrocious. Look around at other peoples' here for an idea of what it should look like - I don't know what made you think it was cool to have all those tiny parts and an assload of unused space, but I suggest you stop following that line of reasoning. It shouldn't take a tutorial to figure out that what you have there isn't going to work so well. Also atrocious is your inability to look through this thread (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9286), which provides more than enough to be a good starting point for learning to texture.

You've also got this (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16796), which can teach you normal bakes and highpolies and other buzzwords that make you sound important and knowledgeable.

Then there's Dane's tutorial (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5234) from a while back and Dane's other tutorial (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9581) from a while back which will teach you some of the basics.

I am guessing he has just flattened it by the looks of it. Unwrap it manually, don't use the flatten thing.

Um, perhaps more than just rendered clouds with changed levels?

Its not cheating to use a metal base texture, as long as you edit it. Add some camo in, as its a tank, fake in some scratches, play with the opacity of different levels using brushes and masks to get a unique natural look. Make paint chipped off by deleting sections in the masks.

To make a decent looking texture it takes alot more than just a quick 2 minute job.

make a high poly then bake it and put it onto a low poly mesh...
then you can fliter the oa map into a normal map with nvidia's normal map filter.
add them into the same stack and work from there. having the normal map in the diffuse is better at showing were lines are and stuff that would be lighter from being scratched and all that. you should probally follow Dano's tutorial a bit like teh lag showed. may want to get some good brushes too.. you have a lot of wasted space in the uv's too you have there. i dont really suggest using normal or flatten mapping, they just make everything into little faces around there, but I do soppose they work, just harder to work with. what you should really do is outline the hard edges with a light brush, and use a darker for the main metal. then use like burn and dodge to mess it up a bit to get some more feeling into it. there's alot you can do, and theres alot you need to learn. <-( same with me )

"The Lame Way"?

No, taking screenshots of a tank and pasting it over your UV's DOES NOT COUNT AS TEXTURING.

Making a normal map with photoshop alone will never give you anything remotely as good as a decent high poly bake. That, and it will be way more time consuming for a much shittier result.

More likely than not this is going into CoH. Most of CoH's prettiness comes from the normal mapping on the units. You don't want to fuck that up.

Please try and actually know what you are talking about when you suggest something to others.

I agree with legionaire, all the way. Its best to bake high poly's to low poly objects, its more fun than creating ohe in Ps. What I do sometimes is I use cgtextures(google it, they have a great aray of textures) to do some texture work in Photoshop. I basically use metal's, and add details myself, say scratches, wear, bullet holes etc for the diffuse.

Also, when making the texture, its always good to have a "base" texture, be it the metal, rust or whatever. From that you add detail on top of it

and your tank will be fine :)
