View Full Version : Well,

Apparently it's not uncommon for people to get the flu without expressing a fever. My mom doesn't get a fever when she has the flu, and apparently neither do I.

So, I've been running around campus with the swine flu for the past ten days, forcing myself to ride my bike and expose myself to the California-smoke-heavy air because "it's just a cold, you'll get over it."

Because of these exacerbating conditions, I now have pneumonia. Awesome. Looks like I'm out of school for the next two weeks. Great.

You seem to have neglected that you might just have given dozens of people your disease.

mazel tov on killing that old lady, rob.

Way to think on a mass scale! :neckbeard:

But yeah, that sucks quite a bit. If it turns out all this coughing/sniffing isn't just a cold, I'm giving it to my roommate at worst.

Wow man, that really sucks. My friend had swine flu in June, and missed some of his exams because of it (though he did get to do them later). But still, I hope you get better as soon as possible, and that things go as well as they can.

Yeah, as Mass pointed out, I have directly exposed myself to 150+ students in my classes, my family and my brother's closest friends, my roommates, my brother's basic training company (including all their commanders, many of whom shook my hand), at least 200 random people who were crammed into a sealed metal cylinder with me for three hours, and any other people who I happened to come close to while traveling.

Given the number of people I came in contact with, I figure I spread the swine flu to at least a dozen people, spread across at least two states.

And who says I'll have no impact on the world? :-3

e: my roommate is coughing now. I betcha he's got it. :saddowns:

If I get any kind of flu then I'm more prone to dying then a normal person. Atleast you don't have to worry about dying. If I get any kind of blood infection then I'm screwed.

Every damn person who lives with me has the Swine Flu now.
Every.
Damn.
One.

I haven't caught it yet, but I've been quarantining myself, mostly. I make my own food, wash my hands a lot, yadda yadda yadda.

You guys are lucky that you have strong immune systems unlike me. So I have to be way more cautious. Right now I have a cold and a cough but that's not really harmful to me. :saddowns:

Swine flu is just the normal flu with a slight name twist imho.

Rob Oplawar
September 6th, 2009, 04:16 PM
Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. I have a particular strain of the flu that is characterized by the fact that it oddly enough seems to infect young people more than old people. It's still just the flu.

The way people die of the flu is by complications. Such as pneumonia.
But again, pneumonia is just pneumonia. I'm on antibiotics and inhalers and decongestants and the doctor actually prescribed me a narcotic as a cough-suppressor. I'll be fine. So like, people need to stop freaking out about swine flu.

Exactly, swine flu is just like any other flu. 1000's of people die every year from the normal flu, and the only difference with the swine flu is that you hear about it in the public, and on the news and such.

Please, elaborate. I am most likely wrong, that's just what I've been hearing. TBH, I could care less about swine flu. If I get it, I get it. But to me, unless proven otherwise, it's just another strain of flu.

A reason is because it has no genetic relationship with any other flu.
We have not had the chance to build an immunity to it because it is new and different and a lot of people have a risk of dying because of that.

Which is why I think it's a better idea to not get a flu shot.

Isn't it a mix of bird flu and pig flu?

They're different virus strands.

no, you are 100% right.

It has a less than 10% mortality rate, and the only ones who die from it are the ones who don't treat it correctly.

I started taking an antibiotic for it Saturday night, and already I feel much, much better. I still have an occasional painful cough, but on the whole I feel well along the path to recovery.

Yay!

Swine flu's hype FROM SCIENTISTS (read: not the media!) has been because of it's potential to harm us if a deadly mutation occurs.
we have very little resistance to it because we just havnt faced it before.

Also if you read your history the first wave of the spanish flu passed without incident and very little deaths.
it was only later after a mutation occurred that it became the infamous flu we know today. :eng101:

Limiting the spread limits the chance of a mutation, but it's far too late to stop it spreading now.

hth.
