Do you read books in your free time: Yes
Favorite genre of books: Military Fiction/Nonfiction
Favorite non-fiction book: Shooter
Favorite fiction book: Red Storm Rising
Least favorite book: Twilight
What would you recommend to a high school student: Anything by Tom Clancy.

What books did you read during high school and did you like/hate any of them?
Umm...assuming this means for class, not many. And I enjoyed them all once I buckled down and read them. As for spare time reading, I read too many to list. The whole halo series, every one of tom clancy's books, even the non fiction ones. Quite a few iraq war autobiographies, along with a sprinkling of random books I was told I had to read.

Do you read books in your free time: Yes
Favorite genre of books: Science Fiction
Favorite non-fiction book: Shit. I don't read much nonfiction. D:
Favorite fiction book: Lord of the Rings Trilogy
A book you hate the most: The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Great literary work, but terrible to read. I don't care if it's a classic, it's so horribly boring.
What would you recommend to a high school student: His Dark Materials Trilogy. Love those books, and the interesting religious allegories they use.
What books did you read during high school and did you like/hate any of them? Assuming this means assigned books, I read everything from Gilgamesh to The Odyssey, to Devil in the White City. I generally liked all of them, even if the assignments related to them weren't altogether enjoyable. Even The Scarlet Letter was a good book in retrospect. If there wasn't some reason to teach them to us, the books wouldn't be on the list. :eng101:

Hope that helps. Answers in bold.

Do you read books in your free time: Yes

Favorite genre of books: Humor

Favorite non-fiction book: Can't think of one, N/A

Favorite fiction book: The Alphabet of Manliness: Extended Edition

Least favorite book: Tough choice, but I'd have to pick The Piano Lesson

What would you recommend to a high school student: The Alphabet of Manliness: Extended Edition, even if just for variety

What books did you read during high school and did you like/hate any of them?

I hated every single book I ever read in high school. No exceptions. They were all what I like to call "white guilt" books. Basically, shit like A Lesson Before Dying and Black Boy. After reading Black Boy (the first in the long line of shit), I never actually had to read another book in high school, because I knew the premise and the story of them all.

"We're black, so that must mean we have problems! That said, we're going to argue with each other for at least 150 pages, and it's all white people's fault somehow."

I will give that some books, like Black Boy, had interesting enough premises to have a reason to be published. But, if you really think about it, they were the only ones that were able to expand on and actually fill in the holes left by that summary. That quote above wasn't a joke, by the way. That's really how some of these stories are. There are some plays, like The Piano Lesson, which have the absolute worst story ever to be put on paper. They have no redeeming qualities and have the shittiest of themes. In fact, August Wilson and Ernest Gaines are probably the worst writers I have ever had the misfortune to study. They make Stephanie Meyer look like an actual writer.

That's interesting, because the year I had my Honors English class they stopped having us read Black Boy, and we read the Frederick Douglass book instead, which I did enjoy.

Also, Elefant, why did you hate To Kill a Mockingbird so much? I am curious.

Favorite non-fiction book: Pale Blue Dot
Favorite fiction book: A Scanner Darkly
A book you hate the most: To Kill A Mocking Bird.
What would you recommend to a high school student: Anthem
What books did you read during high school and did you like/hate any of them?
A majority of the books that I read in high school did not agree with me. Not because they were poorly written, but because they just weren't interesting to me. Yes, I saw the foreshadowing in Street Car Named Desire, the symbolism in The Great Gatsby, the character development in A Separate Peace; I just didn't like them. There are more, but I'm too lazy to think about them.

What books did you read during high school and did you like/hate any of them?
Only being a freshmen the only books i've read as a class book was Romeo and Juliet. I thought it was very stupid. And the worst part, is that me thinking it was stupid (which it is) led to me thinking the work was stupid, which led to me having to read it again this year. :(

And the worst part, is that me thinking it was stupid (which it is) led to me thinking the work was stupid, which led to me having to read it again this year. :(I often find that most teens who have read Romeo and Juliet (usually forced) are ill equipped to handle the subject matter. A play about love/loss/hate cannot be understood by someone as young as you, or even I. Re-read it when you're older. It might make more sense, and remember, while the prose may be florid and flowing, that iambic pentameter is only purposeful to a point. Try to run each line through your head. It may take a while, but it makes the play that much more meaningful. It also doesn't hurt to see it live.

Because we read it in 8th grade and I mildly disliked it then. Then we read it in 9th grade again and I only disliked it more.
