View Full Version : Optimizing connection for online gaming

I've been having trouble lately with online games. I seem to lag really really bad, but everyone else around me plays fine. This is mostly in Left 4 Dead 2 (360). I know that's been having some really bad lag issues at the moment, but it seems it's just me that was lagging. Like I said everyone else was moving\playing fine, but whenever I moved just get warped back. I have DSL, and it's a crap connection compared to mostly everyone else's, but I've never had this problem with any online games. Are there any methods or applications that would help get the most out of what I have? Or am I just stuck with what I have?

Wireless. I'm only about 15 feet from the router.

We have a 5.8GHz phone, and it has that filter thing on it.
E: No we don't have anything bluetooth, but I live in a 6-apartment building, but even so I don't think anyone has bluetooth anything.

Yeah I wasn't concerned about the inline filter, I was concerned about the wireless being on the same spectrum as everything else 2.4GHz...

Wireless is not that optimal for gaming in the first place.

Can you use an ethernet cable to cross the 15ft?

The longest one I have is that one that comes with the 360. I'll check if it reaches.

you can get a 25 ft. cable for like 6 bucks.

I run a 50 foot CAT6 cable to go a distance of 20 feet lol. What can I say, I hate lag.
This is what I got from Rogers Cable. Keep in mind I have the High-Speed Extreme service which is the best they offer to consumers, I believe.

Also, use Pingtest.net to test your connection itself. I think it's best to be connected to the router for this. Here's my result:

1100Mbps Down / 55Mbps Up...
Yes, that's 11 Docsis modems, each with a 100Mbps Down / 5Mbps Up connection line.

just buy a really long cable, or, run it through your entire apartment. who knows, maybe your landlord will knock some money off next months rent for the renovation. it's all pretty cheap.

What I would do is buy a Linksys WRT160N and the Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter and then set up the router for N.
But if you have no way to do this or w/e just go to radio shack and get a 20-30ft cable.
If you say your internet sucks bad
Um, what about me?

It's satellite lol, but I'm having a DSL connection for me activated December 1st so I don't have to put up this this shit satellite.
P.S. I don't even live anywhere near Kansas but my origin of my connection is near there, but I actually live in Pennsylvania.

Never go to radioshack for a cable they overcharge.

Fuck just make your own cable.... buy a box of cat5e, some ends and a crimper tool. Then after you've made your cable and you're a huge success you an make more and sell them to your friends.

The cable reaches the 360 fine. Not really much of a difference though. I guess it's just my service, since it seems there's really nothing else I can do.
