The campaign to stop X Factor winner Joe McElderry from claiming the Christmas number one has divided music critics and fans alike. At the time of writing, Rage Against The Machine's expletive-laden 1992 single Killing In The Name, is ahead by several thousand sales (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8413557.stm). For those that dont know, the UK's Christmas number 1 is being announced today, its a big deal every year.

People are fed up with Xfactors dominance of the Christmas charts over the past few years, Simon Cowel's always winning it.

This year, facebook campaign started to get Rage Against The Machine to- Killing In The Name to number 1 to beat the Xfactor bullshit.

I for one support this, I'm fed up of this Xfactor crap every year, hope Rage win it. If Rage win, proceeds go to charity, they will come here and do a massive free concert for people. If the other person wins, they keep all the money.

Thoughts? You can see the chart up and listen to radio show from this link if you want. It will be played just before 7pm, like an hour and half from now.

Pfft, its not really about if you like Rage, its more you cant stand these talentless idiots getting a one hit wonder at Christmas time.

4 years running we've had an Xfactor winner being number 1, all of them, apart from Leona Lewis, has only had 1 hit.

Oh, by the way, all this started because one guy started a facebook group saying he was fed up of Xfactor number ones, and for people to buy rages album. So power to the people!

does it really matter? it's just a fucking song.

there's more to life than someone ELSE getting the #1 song.

Rage got it!

Christmas number 1 is big here, its the biggest selling of songs throughout the year. Personally I dont care at all for charts, I just listen to songs I enjoy.

Its not necessarily about the song Cojafoji, its more about the music industry as a whole, big companies shouldnt be able to monopolise the charts, forcing people to buy the songs, making stars out of idiots. To me music industry is about people with great talents, and Rage's are far more talented that this random joe (pun intended hah) who will get 1 song and then fade out, like all the other reality tv music stars.

:P Fair enough blind, it made my day though, $105,000 raised for shelter charity, plus the sales from the downloads :)

First ever number one to come from soley downloads. 500,000 in a week, beat them by 10%. Best 29p spent.

Marketing, when some random song thats been butchered by a no one is repeated upto 20 times a day by some station alone, that's when it becomes quite a problem and the fact a band like rage won is quite a monumental thing considering half the songs played over here is R&B and rap, most radio stations have even heard of Soil, nickel back or Metallica let alone rage against the machine, AC DC, iron maiden and the likes.

RAtM are heavily r&b/rap influenced in case you didn't notice, watch some of Tom Morello's interviews/guitar lessons and he specifically talks about trying to get a rap/hip-hop sound. Also; try listening to the abomination that is called American Radio.

What were they expecting? It's in the lyrics, of course they're still gonna do it lol

Doesn't the UK play uncensored radio or is it just Germany/Europe?

Depends on the station. This was broadcast on BBC Five Live, who rarely play any kind of music and probably have to conform to content rules set by the BBC.
