Hello guys, there are some smart people here so I thought I'd ask this question.
I'm looking for a new monitor and a new HD TV, so I thought why not buy one to do both. I've found a few 32" ones for around 500-600, and I don't want to go above that price range.
I also don't fully understand how playing old games and things on that would work right, IE halo ce. Do I need anything like a DX10 card to run games like H2V in HD? Will it even run in HD?
If someone could just give me a basic overview and a pointer toward some good low price HD TV's that'd be great.

You'd probably be connecting your HDTV to your computer with the DVI cable, so make sure the HDTV supports a DVI input and a nice max resolution. Obviously something like 1920x1200 would be preferrable, but probably out of your price range. But basically, the higher, the better the image will look.
You don't need a DX10 card to play H2V, but those new mid-range GeForce 8 series cards are looking very nice and a very reasonable price.

What? DX10 and Halo 2 Vista have nothing to do with each other. You can run anything in HD (HD is just a high resolution) on DX9 hardware. Halo CE will run in higher resolutions (1280x720 is what you are looking for) so it would run.
I don't recommend TVs as monitors, even small ones. But all you need to do is just search for reviews on that model, find respected sites and go by the reviews.
One thing you should do is check the 2407WFP Dell monitors, they make the Halo 3 beta look so sexy. ;)

But basically, the higher, the better the image will look. He'd need to do DVI-HDMI as I don't know of any HDTVs with DVI input (or in his price range, at least.) He won't find anything in his price range over 13x7 resolution (1080i/720p).
Your best bet is to buy a good quality 22''/24'' Monitor with component in or with an extra DVI/VGA for the 360. I used to play all my 360 stuff on my 22'' monitor, it's great, just use the 360 VGA cable.

You'd be better off with a 24" LCD that can actually display a 1080p image without scaling it.The Dell Atty mentioned is like $609 the last I looked. 1920x1200 resolution versus a measly 1280x720 or so on that TV. Halo 3 beta in 1080p looks great. :)

And I'm stuck with these old-gen TVs and monitors...

I'd get a 24" LCD over a big HD TV... the 24" will have a smaller pixel pitch, which means better quality, and they both display 1920x1200
edit
Might want to look and see if a 24" LCD has HDMI, I think a few do, but I'm not too sure. HDMI would be useful for future upgrades (xbox360 elite)

No HDTV has 1920x1200. They all have either 13x7 or 19x10. :)
He doesn't need HDMI, he can HDMI -> DVI it.

Oh, yeah, 1920x1080 is what I meant.

Westinghouse, LG, and Benq's 24" LCDs have HDMI iirc.
And the Westy is a giant TN pannel, so don't even bother.

Yeah but they are all expensive. The BenQ is $730 at 'Egg.
You are just as well off with either a DVI <-> HDMI set up or Component. Just be sure you check the alternative input reviews for the monitor you choose, some have great input quality and others have disgusting ones.

I know H2v only requires DX9, I just didn't know the rest..whatever lol.
So you think a better bet would be a nicer smaller LCD display that I could hook up my 360 too?
My friend seggusted something like this..

What's the minimum resolution to be called HD?
Atty

HD is 720p/1080i/p and the resolutions are: 1280x720 (720p), 1366x768(720p/1080i), and 1920x1080(720p/1080i/p). There is also that weird 540p or whatever and then ED which is 480p.

DVI-D to HDMI adapters would work fine. Any medium to highend card can output a wide variety of resolutions. 1920x1200 isn't possible on Strictly 16:9 screens. A modern Video card can do 1920x1080 with out any issues.
But Go for no less then a 30" with a HDTV. Also Only go for 1080p. Don't consider 768p or 1080i
Any of the monitor brands mentioned above will work great, all are good brands.
HD is 720p/1080i/p and the resolutions are: 1280x720 (720p), 1366x768(720p/1080i), and 1920x1080(720p/1080i/p). There is also that weird 540p or whatever and then ED which is 480p.
540p is 1080i.
Since 1920x1080 interlaced at 29.97 is actually 59.94fps. Thats really just 1920x540 at 59.94fps. It's confusing but some displays will be actually a 16:9 and take 1080i and bob it to 540;60p then double the vertical resolution. So you get good looking 60fps 1080i video which looks progressive.
