Microsoft announced today that Xbox LIVE support for original Xbox games will be discontinued on April 15, 2010.

Halo 2 fans take note - you have ten weeks left to play multiplayer games over Xbox LIVE before the service will be discontinued. Microsoft announced today that as of April 15th they will no longer be supporting the original Xbox console or software on Xbox LIVE. This also applies to original games being played on an Xbox 360.

You can read their official announcement HERE (http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/02/05/xbox-live-being-discontinued-for-original-xbox-consoles-and-games.aspx).

We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back, we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans. Halo 2 has been at or near the top of the Xbox LIVE charts for original games since it launched over five years ago. We're extremely thankful to everyone who has played, enjoyed and supported Halo 2 over Xbox LIVE. We've had some great fun together, including far too many humpday losses to even recount.

That said, mark your calendars now - on April 14th let's all rally to go online for one last hoorah. One final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2.

Stay tuned to Bungie.net in the weeks to come for more details.
I wanted to let you know that on April 15, 2010 Microsoft will discontinue Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox 1 games playable on Xbox 360. Our first step in this process will be to turn off auto-renewals for those members who only use Xbox LIVE on a v1 Xbox. While I can’t comment on the specifics, this change will allow us to continue evolving the LIVE service with new features and experiences that fully harness the power of Xbox 360 and the Xbox LIVE community. We did not make this decision lightly, but after careful consideration and review we realize that this decision will allow us unprecedented flexibility for future features. So long h2x kiddies your going to have to put up with halo 3 now or learn to play other games.

I doubt even they would be stupid enough to try and play h2v, especialy all the little MLG fags.

depends if the update will even allow you to play original games on the xbox, their planing on changing alot of resources for the xb360 so it maybe possibly you won't even beable to play original games.
I know this is just the servers but what the message said is the new updates wont allow backwards compatibility so anything is possible i guess.

what ?

nowhere does it say anything about backwards compatibility, and they would never remove the ability to play your old games on the 360, they are just not letting you play on live anymore.

as for xbconnect, you need to have your xbox connected to your computer and set it all up right, which the average live user (12 year old) will never be able to figure out.

Think about this when you think about OnLive.

...what are you trying to say? People with old stuff won't be able to upgrade....?No... I'm trying to say that back-catalog games can be cut out of the service -- which means they physically won't exist to you anymore. Even worse, they can decide who develops for it -- sucks to be an indie developer.

This is fucking ridiculous.

I figured they were going to simply update the backend of XBL which would make it incompatible with the current (original) Xbox dashboard, much like if you are running an out-of-date version of the 360's dashboard. I doubted Microsoft would be so fucking stupid as to completely end XBL on the 360's backwards compatibility.

Fuck Microsoft.

I'd be pretty upset if it weren't for H2V/XBC.

XBconnect doesn't work with the Xbox 360.

Well, it doesn't work on regular 360 games. Not sure about original Xbox games.

Cue about 50,000 petitions for Bungie to make an XBox 360 version of Halo 2.

I hope Microsoft doesn't plan to release any live-enabled Originals titles on live marketplace. People will get pissed.

XBconnect doesn't work with the Xbox 360.

False. I XBConnected my 360 and played the original Halo when i first bought it off of marketplace.

It might work for original games, like I said I was uncertain of.

However, it does NOT work for native 360 games. Well, it does...but it doesn't.

You will be able to find other people like you should, and you will be able to join their games, but if the ping is greater than 30 ms, you will be booted from the game.

I see what you mean, and that makes sense; why would a LAN ever go over 30ms?

This is why closed, proprietary platforms (DRM'd... maybe even Windows... PC games included) will destroy any chance that videogames has of becoming a legitimate art medium.

You can't have culture without longevity.

Well why would you use XBConnect if not to play the old XBox Originals that now have live discontinued. Why would you use it on 360 games where live is still supported?

So you don't have to pay for XBL, that's why. I refuse to pay to play online games.

Yeh, I could see that, but shiiiit. You can even just get the $8 a month and play only when you have down time.

12 month's of service is always being discounted on the Dashboard now, I think I saw it like 13 months for 34.99 a few weeks ago. Anyway, if they need to get rid of Xbox live for the older games to further develop the service, fine by me, even though it does suck for anyone who wants to play Halo 2.

^somehow i dont think thats the soul reason they are doing it.

smooth moves, and yes this makes me worried about any of these online game stores.Any proprietary game platform... at all. Like I was saying, videogames is being ushered into the broadcast model.

(As I said on the OnLiveFans forum, who are remarkably mature with this issue...)

OnLive's purpose is videogames as consumable entertainment. You purchase a game that satisfies a certain type of entertainment that you wish... you get bored of it... you get a new game that satisfies a (slightly/wholly) different type of entertainment that you wish... and eventually the old stuff goes away to make room for the new. You keep new experiences, OnLive makes commission, and it couldn't be any easier for you.

But if you expect videogames through OnLive to be a portion of our culture and to have artistic qualities -- you're fooling yourself. The fear of being kicked off the market will only promote developers to make consumable hot-sellers for 2 weeks that have a 2-year long tail then disappear. You will not get cultural-impacting content off that business model... especially not before videogames reach that stage as a medium itself.

Convenient entertainment, not culture-impacting art.

OH NOES!... honestly when was the last time any of you tried playing an Xbox original game online?

If they didn't make a big announcement over this, 90% of you wouldn't have even noticed.

I think it sucks that they're not supporting a product that they discontinued four years ago too, but... *shrug* I'm not bothered by it.

I mean.... I've played an Xbox original game on my 360 a total of... maybe seven times.... and I have about 60 Xbox 1 games....

The only time I've ever really been effected by something like this is with Skate for the 360... EA doesn't support the game anymore, so several of the achievements and such aren't possible to get now that their service doesn't exist.
