Rep bars are next to user titles, so that those with lots of bars have two levels of them.

An issue I'm having with the backend is the way styles are generated. As such, it's gonna be a bit before I get adjusted to this new workflow and can get cracking on VB4-itizing our old skins and de-suck-itizing the VB4 skin...

I wouldn't mind knowing how you solve this problem. Because I want to know how to add shadows the images without CSS and image editing.
Problem1:
When you edit a post there is a large gap above the tools in the editing window.
Problem2 (Biggest problem so far): No source theme.

Get rid of the speech bubble effect on quote tags, it makes it look like my avatar is saying things that are quoted.
VB4 stock emotes and icons are amazingly bad -> http://www.modacity.net/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif:rolleyes::cool::eek::p
On user pages, "Find all posts by user"/"Find all threads started by user" are gone.

Another thing. On the front page, recent forum posts should be at the top rather than comments or blog posts.
Infracted/warned posts just have a tiny icon in the bottom. Red/yellow highlighting must return.
Fix the "reply" going to "quick reply", that bothers me so much.
And for God's sake, in the new theme, change the button from "Unread Bad Posts". I "facepalmed" (:embarrassed:) when I saw that.

The theme is absolutely god awful. Hell, it doesn't even stretch to wide screen all the way on my monitor.
+ It's way to bright.
+ The thread list has giant icons that are obstructive to my vision. Make them about the same size as before.
+ The text in posts don't reach all the way to the right hand side. They go about half way and stop. Make use of all that space please.
+ Add a line between the post and the sig. Like in the old version.

So when adding attachments, a list comes up with what I'm guessing is every attachment you've posted on the site. I didn't think to delete it from the CP, so I deleted the thread. You mean unless it ends up like MW2. Vista was never broken and any complaints from you babies (that never existed) have been fixed.
None of the things that are fucked in vB4 can be fixed without a massive overhaul. Even worse, if we give it a massive overhaul, we will be unable to upgrade it in the future without even more problems. You really need to understand how bad the customization panel is, and how many templates need to be manually edited.

What problem do you guys have with the rep and infractions? They look fine to me. Only difference is that they are 2 lines now instead of 1. I'd prefer 1, but after seeing Hunter's screenshot, I'm wondering if more is broken with the UCP than I thought.

No davis, they are talking about in the CP it takes up 2 lines now instead of one.

In posts, rep and user title are on the same line, and for 6 bars, it leaks over. Just a matter of moving it down a line.
He's talking about the User CP though. Yes, rep/infractions are like this:
Thread title.......................Date/Time
Reason...........................User Name
The bar (red/green/yellow) is to the left of this, between the two lines. Guess that stupid warning of mine did come in handy. XP

Thanks mr bacon.
I have another proposal. How about instead of trying to beat vBulletin 4 into something usable and instead of downgrading back to 3, why don't we get p0lar, klange, hunter, and anybody else with an ounce of PHP experience to help me finish the Greeble Forum module now that Greeble 3.4b is "done".
Seriously tho, vBulletin has some bloat and crap to it, but I have to respect its impressive feature list. Now that I've been working on this shit for several years I know how much effort goes into designing these things, whether or not the end product is actually good.
We can still hate it- god knows Microsoft invested a lot in Windows, and I still hate that- but as with Windows it's unfair to look at vBulletin and shout "how hard can it be". :P

People, again, don't point out problems with the style UNTIL WE ASK IF THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. It isn't finished and things will inevitably fuck up as we mess with it. When a building is under construction, you don't walk up to the workers and tell them that the area they're working on looks bad and offer suggestions on how it should look at the end; they more than likely have a goal they're working towards.
Explain to me how to use it on AIM. I don't give a flying shit that they have limited fields they want you to fill in. I want to see plain damn CSS. How the fuck do I even add my own CSS to it?

[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [40] [...]
I believe it should show as
[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [...] [40]
Its like the same for an equation, you never write one as
1x + 2x + 3x + 4x + 5x + 40x + ...
It would be:
1x + 2x + 3x + 4x + 5x + ... + 40x

StyleVar sucks. I want to just be able to edit the goddamn CSS.
I recently found out that the raw stylesheets are stored in the template editor, under the CSS category. It pulls various values for its parameters from StyleVars.
Convoluted, but it allows for easier customization of a skin base, much like our own with the Halo and Source variants.

Disable quick reply or something, this is really irritating.
Also, turn off blogs. They serve no purpose. If people want a blog they can get one of their own. All they do is divert discussion off of the main forums into a situation where posts can't be infracted or easily monitored. I'm going to keep saying this until I am shown a useful way for people to use blogs that couldn't be done on the forums.
flibitijibibo

Would you have liked to see my blog entries on the main forum? I also kinda like how people post their models and shit in a blog rather than shoving it all in one OP in Studio and bumping it with "updated," because (as I mentioned in Ep 13), it's a much better measure of time and shows more development in skills rather than just a massive wall of renders and shit that you have to break your mouse wheel to get through each time you open the thing up.
Edit for less exampley summary: The blogs are excellent for personal work/ideas and their development. Moderation can be done by the blog owner with ease. Lack of infractions is not a big deal.

Well
http://www.modacity.net/forums/entry.php?b=28 - yeah
http://www.modacity.net/forums/entry.php?b=27 - why not, we already have threads like that in tech talk
http://www.modacity.net/forums/entry.php?b=15 - no comment
As for Studio threads - I'm fine with what we have there. Unless there's a "make blogs easy to organize and read" button I think the Studio is a far easier way to keep track of what people are doing. Maybe we just need to have better category filtering for blogs, I don't know. As it stands I hate them with a passion that rivals Jcap's for VB4.
flibitijibibo
February 14th, 2010, 06:57 PM
... Really?
28 has nothing to discuss, 27 would be another annoying "wah i need a torrent" thread (again, nothing to discuss), and... well, 15 you seem to understand.
What about the blogs are difficult to read? As far as I can tell, it's just the Studio with previews of the posts. If one was set on seeing a specific artist's work, they could subscribe to the blog and not the thread, avoiding all the e-mails/messages that are usually just for someone else's comments.
teh lag
February 14th, 2010, 07:28 PM
Nothing to discuss? 28 looks like a release - do we say release section posts belong in blogs? It's a small thing yeah, but so are a lot of releases. I wouldn't be put off if it was a Tech thread. Ditto for 27. We have requests all the time in there. Sure, no 8-page discussion from it, but I still think it'd be fine in a thread. What about CE requests - for a tag or tutorial or app or a quick fact that someone forgot; there's nothing to discuss there either. Should those go in blogs? I just get the feeling that they move things away from the forum just for the sake of using the system.
The Studio exists so people can have discussions about work. Blogs are a post followed by only comments that, as of now, you see in the "latest comments" section and once they're bumped off you'd have to go digging into the blogs to know they exist at all. I would hope that we consider WIPs and such as important enough to warrant full discussion threads. I see no problem with the situation as it is and no improvement to be made by moving that kind of thing to blogs as they are now. If we get a way to see blogs with the level of organization and ease of access that forum threads have, the fine. They're clunky and hard to navigate right now (5 blogs per page? No centralized categorization that I can see?) and I'd rather have the manageability that comes with threads. There at LEAST needs to be a better way to browse them than the 5-per-page linear system.
Maybe you're more used to them. Maybe they'll grow on me. I can't stand them now though.
flibitijibibo
February 14th, 2010, 08:22 PM
I feel like we're saying the same thing about each other's methods. In case I'm full of shit, feel free to edit/expand; if we can get this in one comparison we could iron this shit out:
Thread Method:
Pros:
- Much more public due to it being a part of the forum (i.e. "New Posts" button).
- Can have a personal thread in a specialized subsection.
- Allows for having a single post of all work.
- Multiple projects can be on a single page.
- Common topic can be mixed in one thread for all to discuss in (i.e. Building a computer).
- Moderation by staff (infractions, moving of posts, etc.)
Cons:
- Work can get mixed between comments on other work, and vice versa.
- If the work is on the OP, comments may be too vague to identify what it's commenting on.
- If the work is on the OP (which will grow over time), you have to find the new art, then find the related comments.
- Earlier comments will inevitably become outdated with updates, releases, etc.
- Large common topic threads are prone to shitposts/derails, leading to the entire (and usually massive) thread losing its original purpose. (See: Quick-crit, Building a computer)
- Difficult to search for updates within a single thread.
- Difficult for owner of thread to manage thread themselves.
- Subscribing will include posts that aren't updates of work, but simply comments.
Blog Method:
Pros:
- Blog itself is a personal section for work.
- Allows for personal comments/requests to be made, allowing for less clutter on forum (such as the dozens of "I need a download" or "I have this error" threads).
- Such forum sections can be easily identified as places for broader discussions (i.e. about a game) or a mod release section, rather than a sophisticated version of /r/ (magnet for the wrong group of new people).
- Searching can be done per-artist.
- If working on multiple projects, can separate their updates with titles (see above).
- WIPs can be done post-by-post, making it easier to separate/publish updates.
- Separation of updates allows for separation of comments, making sure unrelated outdated comments are not in the way.
- Releases, while being posted in the blog, can still be posted in the proper section of the site. This prevents having a WIP and Release thread in the same section (unless, in the case of sections like CE, there is a specific release section).
- Entries can be moderated by the user, giving less busy work to the staff.
- Subscribing to a blog will only message about updates/releases, allowing you to avoid a flooded inbox from comments.
Cons:
- All blogs melded into one section on site (before categorization system).
- Not seen in "New Posts," giving possibility of obscurity.
- Updates/Comments limited to a single entry.
- Seeing entire list of work would require even moar post-scrolling. (Personal note: if they have this much work, shouldn't they be getting a portfolio website anyway? (i.e. Timo/Llama Juice/Reaper)
- Moderation limited (i.e. no infractions).
The reason I excluded 5 entries per page is because I'd be amazed if there weren't an option to change it.

Ok guys, I added categories to the blogs, however because our forum style is under construction, it seems to jumble up the categories so they're out of order. They're supposed to have a heiarchy, but it's not working right. For now, please DO NOT USE CATEGORIES IN THE BLOGS.

Another bug I noticed:
When logged out, DST does not automatically adjust, unlike the setting in user profiles that controls the +1 offset of time.

Just gunna throw this out there 'cause I've only seen it posted by like one other person in this 19 pages of bitching... but.
Thanks for putting the effort, time, and money into trying to upgrade the site. Obviously it's not going quite as smoothly as one would like, but... *shrug* shit happens.

why disable quick reply?!

Not saying to remove it, just do something until it can work the way it's supposed to. Like, this post just appeared under Llama's and was labeled as post #0 until I refreshed. And then the quote problem.

i thought it was already explained that it was because of the <--> in his sig.
Rob Oplawar
February 15th, 2010, 10:23 PM
That's from the HTML comment errors from the sig. Should be a simple matter of sticking a htmlspecialchars() in the sig output somewhere.
Odd, I thought vbulletin already did that... perhaps it's using the function to strip disallowed tags instead. Time to experiment with my sig.
e: After experimentation, it seems to be a bug in the way the browser parses the html, not a bug in the forum. Unless I am misunderstanding the way a browser is supposed to detect the end of a comment. It seems to be matching /--.*>/ as the end of a comment, rather than straight up "-->". Odd. But yeah, vBulletin correctly escapes all special html characters like gt and lt into their respective character codes, likely via htmlspecialchars.

Apparently vBulletin v4.0.2 just came out. I'm halting my style edits until it gets installed; it has over 200 bug fixes, hopefully some should address issues with the default style, which we are basically not much more than a slightly modified default.

aaaaand awesome, the upgrade fixed shit on the default skin. Gonna have to revert some edits to the Modacity Classic skin or something, so the fixes aren't immediately apparent to us.

I just tried to post a new blog but apparently I exceeded the amount of tags by 1. What's the point of tagging stuff if I'm no allowed to tag it at all ?

Everything is now worse than it used to be, despite it being partially broken before 4.0.2 upgrade. Solution: vB3.

unless you have a backup of the database and files before you upgraded, its impossible to go back..
of course going back you will lose all the posts since then, but that's not really a loss at all.

VB4 is buggier than a brand new Mircosoft OS.
Yes, more vista jokes.
Also I can't tell if my recent reputations are + or - . It just displays the comment and post.
+ I can't see repuation I give out.
And ALSO I see no bars to determine the difference between warning and infractions.
