A friend of mine is having some issues with his laptop, he's running Windows XP and it's crashing a split second after the "Windows XP" loading screen (with the blue scrolling bars) appears. I've been looking around and apparently the most common cause was one of the latest Windows Updates, I even found a few fixes that didn't seem to help.
First I tried uninstalling a few of the updates using the recovery console, I tried removing multiple updates using the following method:
CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst
BATCH spuninst.txt
(Where "KB977165", I changed to a few different update designations...)
However when I enter the "BATCH spuninst.txt" command I get a series of "Access Denied" error messages in the console. After getting frustrated with this I decided to attempt a repair installation using this guide (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm), however Step 6 (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1_6.htm) doesn't display a list of XP installations to me, instead it lists all the available drive partitions as if I were getting ready to do a fresh install... What am I missing?

If you see nothing but "Access Denied," chances are there's a problem in the spuninst.txt file. This can occur if the boot drive letter for Windows XP is different from the boot drive letter for the Recovery console. All you have to do is boot Windows XP as normal and then do a Search And Replace in the spuninst.txt file to substitute the Windows XP boot drive letter with the boot drive letter used by the Recovery console.Don’t worry about the errors that appear on-screen unless they all come up as "Access Denied." After the batch process completes, type exit and press [Enter] to restart your workstation.
i'm pretty drunk right now, check back with me on Sunday if it still ain't working darlin...

Can't boot into Windows because it BSOD's at the Windows XP logo loading screen that appears after POST, even Safe Mode BSOD's before it loads completely.

So...it doesn't tell you anything on the blue screen?

Can't read it fast enough, flashes for less than 1/2 a second before laptop restarts. Forgot to mention that, my bad.

Don't have the reaction time to take it before it disappears, it's shown for probably a single frame before the screen goes black... Might try and take a video and see if it happens to grab the image.

Dude Lancer you have a freaking awesome camera, set the exposure to really small and hold down for like 3 seconds before the thing dies. Today's cameras can take amazing pictures in what, .3 seconds?

Can you not even use the advanced startup options (F8) to disable reboot on system failure?

Nope, tried that but I can't get to the F8 options before it BSOD's. I was going to work on it a little more this afternoon and try getting a photo of the BSOD. Unfortunately the computer owner wanted it back to take back to the store he got it refurbished from to try and get a refund/deal, he's been having issues with it since he got it so I think he's just fed up.
Thanks for the suggestions though everyone, and you didn't come off as a dick or anything Coja!
