Could benefit from a poll. Also, they do not cause violence in the traditional cause-effect relationship. Can video-games alter mindsets and personalities? Yes, but for the most part this is harmless. The problems arise when you get impressionable people who desperately want to be badass. It's like the people who think Pandora is real and that they're actually trapped spirits of the Na'vi. Some people are just like that.

People can make a two-hour documentary on a handful of violent gamers and it'll cause a ruckus. You could do the same thing about the millions of average gamers, but parents, government officials, and other regulators of media are less likely to care.

Eh, maybe I'm mincing words, but I definitely think that certain video games can desensitize children towards violence. If you buy a child something like F.E.A.R. and all they do is shoot other people, they're not going to have as much of a problem shooting someone as say a child who's never been exposed to that sort of thing.

People actually believe that video games cause violence?

Of course they don't.

This thread is familiar...

Anyways. I need to get back to CoD. I am learning how to use real guns from a video game.

Games don't cause violence. "Games cause violence" causes violence.

Violent games are a "risk factor," meaning that if somebody already has violent tendencies, playing violent games has a good chance of making them even more aggressive.

But saying that violent games makes everyone violent is like saying that milk can kill everyone because a few people with severe lactose intolerance exist, and that's just dumb.

You don't know this. There are always extreme cases. Generally, video games do not cause violence.

It can, it just really depends on the situation. Generally speaking, no they don't. I don't buy that whole thing that playing violent games is gonna make everyone serial killers. There are a bunch of different situations you have to account for, the person, how seriously he/she takes the game (are they allowing the game to consume themselves), life situation, social life, and so on. It just really depends, little kids can definitely be influenced if their parents are not careful, of course how many parents these days are actually good ones... I believe it has to do with more on the life and social life situation than anything. Violent games making a serial killer out of people? People should actually investigate the person's life than just going "Well the guy played Perfect Dark so that was definitely the cause of the killings. And that's our investigation wrap up.".

Video Games do not explicitly cause violence. Just like Porn doesn't cause rape.

A spongebob game sparks just as much activity in the brain as a grand theft auto game. 'nuff said.

I think ifafudafi already solved this thread by being correct and smart.

Violent people cause violence. Games are at no more fault than a handgun. If it's not guns/videogames/drugs/music then it's something else...humans are just violent.

this this a thousand times this

the thread can end in peace now, along with the topic

edit: and saying that humans are predisposed to be violent is horseshit.

To be blunt: fuck no, at least not directly.

The only time videogames could possibly be linked to causing violence is when the user stops separating fantasy from reality. But that could be linked to ANYTHING, not just videogames.

Remember folks: Fantasies, no matter how outlandish, are perfectly fine as long as you can accept that they are. not. real. Period.

There's nothing that isn't biased in some way. Individuals always think at their level ultimately. Regardless the fact remains that there's as much evidence of video games turning people into killers as there is for weed making people psychotic.

Generally speaking, the majority of people who don't actually play video games know absolutely fuck-all about them and thus are unqualified to make this sort of judgement (see: Faux News).

Some games I guess can influence younger people, but then again, those people shouldn't and aren't supposed to be playing those games

Video Games do not explicitly cause violence. Just like Porn doesn't cause rape.
This post makes me even more concerned than anything else.
If people came to that conclusion then it's pretty obvious they've been watching violent porn or assumes that's all there is out there.
Either way, they must be pretty messed in the head to be whacking off to the image of someone being raped.

People jerk it because they can't have sex.
People play shooters because they can't actually go around shooting people.

That's what he meant.

I agree that video games can influence the METHOD with which sickos commit acts of violence (i.e. imitating Manhunt) but as for actually causing the violent tendencies, no way.
