Is the grand tradition of colorful video game manuals coming to a close? It is for Ubisoft, as the company launches an initiative to replace tree-hungry paper manuals with in-game instructions for all PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titles.

Killing trees just isn't in style anymore, and Ubisoft is taking steps to make sure it does its part to make sure we don't end up with a Lorax situation on our hands by doing away with paper manuals for its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles entirely. In place of paper manuals, Ubi's games will come with extensive in-game instructions, which the company says is not only better for trees, but better for customers as well, saying that in-game manuals have the potential to be more robust, free of worries over printing cost and space limitations.

Internal Ubisoft numbers indicate that manufacturing one ton of paper used to create game manuals uses two tons of wood from 13 trees, enough energy to heat an average home for a year, 13,000 gallons of wastewater and 6,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.

Along with doing away with manuals, Ubisoft is teaming with Technimark, Inc. to create a 100 percent-recycled polypropylene "ecoTech" DVD case, which will debut with the PC release of Splinter Cell: Conviction.

"Ubisoft is often recognized for making great games, but it's a special privilege to be the industry leader at saving trees," said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America. "Eco-friendly initiatives are important to the global community and introducing in-game digital manuals on Xbox 360 and PS3 is just the latest example of Ubisoft's ongoing commitment to being a more environmentally conscious company."

Shaun White Skateboarding, due out this holiday season, will be the first Ubisoft title to ship without a manual. There is some irony there, if you look hard enough.

Whether or not other publishers follow Ubisoft's lead, it will be very strange to open up a DVD case and not see some sort of instruction booklet included. Where will we jot down our notes? Our own pad of paper? Preposterous!

We've contacted Ubisoft to ask why Wii titles are exempt from this new initiative, and recieved the following reply from a representative:

"Ubisoft is implementing its in-game manuals first with its PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 games, and we're looking forward to eventually having all of our games feature digital game manuals."

My theory? Many Wii owners aren't quite ready to take off their training wheels just yet.I guess that's nice of Ubisoft to try and cut down on tree killing. To be fair, those statistics are rather daunting. Three things that bug me though:

1. What am I gunna read when I'm shitting?! :C
2. Will this cut the price back down to $50?
3. If not, then why the fuck bother saying "we're going green" when you're obviously just cutting costs to make an even greater profit off of your terrible terrible games?

I used to read the manuals for older games when they had pretty much all the backstory and other interesting information in them. The manual for MW2 was like 3 pages long.

This is true. The manuals that have like, 1 page for controls and 10 pages of warranty are totally useless, but what about the ones with the story/other stuff? I liked reading those...

Downloadable PDF manuals. They already do it with music, so I don't see why games should be any different.

Game manuals are helpful when you're new to a game and need to reference a few things while you're playing. Most games teach you the controls now. If the game has a lot of controls then it's nice to have something to glance at while you're playing, though. I used to play this jet simulator that comes with a beefy manual of flight maneuvers, plane specs, systems, controls, and more. It was basically a small novel. The game also came with a massive map of the Ukraine (I could cover my bed with it). Companies just don't put in that kind of effort anymore.

Maybe they should go green taking down their servers that check if you're online all the time, those add to their carbon footprint. :)

I'll bet burning the coal needed to run all their services and computers makes 1000% more carbon than the trees they were killing would reduce.

Yeah, it sounds like they're trying to "look good" after the DRM thing damaged their reputation...

Well, if it's a PC game, they can simply put the manual in PDF format on the disc, which many games do anyway even if they already have paper manuals. If it's a console game, they can put a URL on the back of the box linking one to a website that contains the manual, or even have an electronic manual be accessible from the in-game menu.

I already use PDF manuals when I play some X360 games, since I frequently buy used titles that just have the disc in a paper sleeve and no box or manual (a lot cheaper than a new game in the UAE), except for games made after 2008. So if I'm unfamiliar with the controls and I'm playing for the first time, I might have a laptop next to me with a PDF manual open (most games release the manual online for free, even console games).

I don't see the elimination of paper manuals to really make a big difference when it comes to the environment, but hey there's nothing wrong with saving paper and besides it reduces production cost when it's time to ship out the finished game. Too bad those savings aren't extended to the customer...greedy Ubisoft >.<

Not just 10 pages of warranty, a lot of manuals tend to be in 2-3 languages so 1/2 or even 2/3 of the manual is completely useless.

^^ Game manuals are total BS now anyways, they just give as little information as possible so they can sell those damn game guides.

I remember when I bought Total Annihilation like 10 years+ ago. The game came with a fucking A4 book. Telling me tons of information, tips, strategies, all the unit info it was fantastic.

As a rule of thumb, PC manuals tend to be more in-depth and give out more tips than console manuals, probably because of those strategy guides.

This is ironic, because when I bought EAW they didn't have a physical manual for the game.

Bad idea.
I hate running through the tutorial levels again just because I forgot how to do something.
Besides, I like having heavy game cases.

Also this. Using MW2 as an example again, the case for that game was so flimsy and light I thought I was going to break it just by opening it. A lot of recent X360 games seem to be following suit, and it's pretty annoying.

A lot of DVD cases are doing the same thing. That big "Recyclable" logo cutout on the front underneath the artwork jacket is probably the culprit.

At least my Metroid Prime Trilogy case is nice and solid :3
