Getting camera for birthday; need suggestions!

Alright, since I know we have a lot of photography lovers here, thought I'd get your input. My father wants to get me a nice camera for my birthday and he's asking me to look for either a feature-set so he can find one or a specific camera.
I'm trying to keep the price low ($400 or below, preferably).

Been looking at Nikon's, Sony, Canon; haven't been completely impressed by any specific camera yet. Anyone have any tips?

I'm looking for a camera with good color reproduction, good image stabilization, great macro. If I can think of anything else I'll let you guys know.

Are you looking for a point and shoot or a dslr? Canon's lower end rebel is around $400 I believe.
