3D bitmaps help

I searched for tutorials on how to make them (Halo 3D bitmaps) but i found nothing.
I understand that it is a sequence of images, but i dont know how to set them up in PS, i can make cubemaps no problem (with the blue and the halo style horizontal cross).
Anyone know how these work?
