MISSION TO THE EDGE OF SPACE.
Fifty years ago, United States Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger made aerospace history. He jumped to Earth from 102,800 feet, near the edge of space. The achievement contributed valuable data that set the groundwork for the United States' first space program.
In our world today, few boundaries remain unchallenged; yet, while many have tried to surpass Colonel Joe Kittinger's accomplishment over the intervening half century, none have succeeded, and some have died. In 2010 the Red Bull Stratos mission will explore the limits of the human body in one of the most hostile environments known to mankind.

I am seriously impressed with this entire project, amazing. It's less about data collection at this point and more about breaking the record I believe, but it's still extremely amazing... Watch the video, I never knew that this Joe Kittinger free-fell from 102,800 feet... Just... Unbelievable.
Also, this is the first ever complete pressure suit developed for a company outside of direct Government control.

Start any higher up and you might incinerate yourself from air friction. :haw:
That space suit looks a hell of a lot more manoeuverable than the current regular ones, though I wonder how well it stands up to micro meteorites and fine dust compared to the NASA model.

Or, errrr, not: Record-breaking space dive grounded by lawsuit (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39694073/ns/technology_and_science-space/)

Not sure how accurate that article is, after reading the following:
"Red Bull developed a sophisticated set of cameras for the skydiver to wear during his descent."
I know for a fact that they plan to use GoPro HD cameras (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs662.snc4/60252_436061971918_50043151918_5252987_7906223_n.j pg) for this... Possibly slightly modified casing but none-the-less. Anyway I doubt this stall will last very long, Hogans complaint seems childish and greedy, something Red Bull will most likely brush aside easily.
Rumors say the jump was planned sometime through September - December, so there's still a few months of opening this year.

Better hope those 'chutes work when they're deployed because this could make an awful mess on the ground hitting at terminal velocity.

I think in some backwards countries in Europe, the first floor is called the ground floor, and the second floor is called the first floor.

i think culture kills that joke in some places. think like, ground floor is ground level, first floor is above the ground floor. its like ~15 foot drop.
or if it makes you feel better, 2nd floor, lol. Y U KILL JOKE?

So you walk into a building. You're on a floor. This is the first floor you encounter. Thus it is the first floor.
Please stop confusing the issue with weird region-specific wrongfulness.

Modacity has become an off-topic forum. The tangents are more interesting here than its actual serious discussions, which are better on other forums dedicated to those specific topics. Except for halo CE. I don't understand how there's still people playing and modding that game...
