View Full Version : No Shave November?

Who's doing it? I think I might, but I still kinda got those patchy beard hairs on the sides, which is annoying as hell. That, and my legs are hairy as fuck, so waxing would NOT be an option.

Supposedly, if you don't go through with it, you're 'supposed to' wax your legs. NSN is about growing facial hair.

On Shadowe'en (October 31st), the complete moustache region, including the entire upper lip and the handlebar zones, must be completely shaved.
For the entire duration of Movember (Movember 1st - 30th inclusive), no hair shall be allowed to grow in the goatee zone - being any facial area below the bottom lip.
There is to be no joining of the moustache to sideburns.[1]

Movember (a portmanteau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portmanteau) of the words 'moustache (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moustache)' and 'November') is an annual month-long event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November. The event has been claimed to have been invented in 1999 by a group of Australian men from Adelaide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide,_South_Australia).

Does the thread title say movember? No. It says no-shave November. I love how you're convinced I wasn't trying to grow a beard, I was actually trying to grow a moustache but I was doing it wrong.
Growing a moustache to raise awareness for disease is all well and good (and it works very well too, doesn't it- moustaches look very diseased to me), but do you know why people grow beards here in November? Because it's fucking cold.
e: So diseased. Especially that monstrosity. It looks like a caterpillar died on his face. I hope that's not what a typical Australian looks like, because that is one ass-ugly moustache, I have to say.

My beard has come to a halt, seem's the beard has somewhat of a predetermined length of about 7Cm.
In fact, my beard is starting to die off, it's changing colour and becoming brittle.
Kornman00
November 25th, 2010, 05:12 PM
Why does the military?
Standard US forces are the only ones (in modern world military forces) who I know of which are limited to a set range of mustaches and sideburns which can only go to the bottom of your year hole in length. Why? Because in order get a proper seal on those fucking gas masks, you have to be "clean shaven". Or at least, that's the excuse they're sticking to. When was the last time we've actually had to use gas masks to combat CBRN in a declared war? Probably 'Nam, but I'm no historian so don't quote me on that.
Also, not even excuses of religion can get you out of shaving. However, medical profiles can grant you a certain, albeit small, bread length.
However, while on leave (ie, vacation) you can typically get away with not shaving. My last parent organization tried to throw a grooming regulation into their unit regulations (units can ADD to regulations, but they can't TAKE from military regs) saying that even while on leave you have to be smooth as a babies butt. However, no one that I knew listened to that reg. I was technically also out of THEIR hair regulation, but no one in my immediate unit really paid that reg much attention since nothing was ever said (I still fell within military regs). Funny thing was, when I was working with the Brigade commander on something, he didn't mention anything, nor did he have the Brigade CSM pull me aside and chew me out (ie, yell at me and such) on my hair length.
But I digress. I don't think a school wants their chil'ren to have clean shaved faces in case of a CBRN attack.
paladin
November 25th, 2010, 09:13 PM
I see. Well maybe the school just want their students to look 'nice'. If the school has policy on facial hair, am I correct in assuming it has a strict dress code, or even uniforms?
Cortexian

@Korn, that's the same reason Canada likes most of its Forces to be clean shaven. But the entire idea is outdated since the addition of positive-pressure masks. Speaking of the Canadian Forces and chemical weapons/gas masks, check out these:
Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit

http://www.cjiru-uiic.forces.gc.ca/images/ig-ri/cjiru-uiic-10.jpg
Although I'm pretty sure those aren't positive-pressure masks it would still be pretty hard to get them on with a beard.
