Game's finally coming out after 6 years on 11/11/11.
New engines been confirmed

Seeing lots of speculation about #tesv (http://twitter.com/search?q=%23tesv) game engine. It's brand new... and it's spectacular!

Half-Life 2? Halo series? Even Fallout 3 was better than Oblivion, and it too was pretty bad. Seriously, I can't stand playing Oblivion because the characters make me cringe; a black spot in an otherwise lovely game.

Mods. Its the only thing that makes bethesda's games visually pleasing. They have been saying they will be focusing more on animations and making it look generally better this time. New engine is proof that they are actually trying, to some degree.
Don't judge it till you see screens, but the story is still going to be the reason I buy it.

bring back spears god dammit.
i actually enjoy morrowind more than oblivion for several reasons, but one of the big ones is because of individual weapon skills. axe and blunt are not the same thing and should not be under the same skill category. also, i want to be able to hit stuff with staffs again. directional blocking wouldnt be terrible either, as in, blocking to the right or to the left. be able to control that shield bash thing would be nice too. oh and hand to hand blocking: fuck that. if iv got a big sword and some old woman puts her hands up, i expect to cut them the fuck off, not recoil backwards and get punched in the groin 6 times.

i know it sounds like i just want morrowind with better graphics, but i find myself so much more immersed in morrowind than oblivion. i loved all the little devices, like the pressure plates and stuff in oblivion, but the environments and the people in morrowind made me feel so much more involved. maybe it was all the racism... idk

You know what engine would have actually been good for a game like this? Bungie's Blam! rendering engine. It really dose everything an RPG would need. Automatically generated LOD, dynamic lights, amazing particles, background loading, huge draw distances, etc. They couldn't really do tech 5 since that mainly does indoor environments and doesn't have much of a draw distance. At least gamebryo is getting a significant upgrade. I doubt they'd write a whole new engine.

Warsaw
December 14th, 2010, 01:14 AM
Wait, what? Did you just say id Tech 5 mainly does indoors? Hello, Tech 5 was designed as id's first engine with a focus on outdoor environments.

Futzy

It's similar to Gears in that it can do out door but its the size of an indoor area. Doesn't matter anyway, they're not using T5.

Wht does it seem to me like Rage takes place in one long, meandering, spaghettified canyon? Does megatexture technology need to be able to predict where you're going to work properly? That's probably why it would be a bad fit for an Elder Scrolls game.

Easily fixed with a mod that replaces the sound file. Someone should do that...

The animations also feel weak and there's no show of tension. You also need a very slight screen shake while holding and have it abruptly stop when the arrow goes. It's a bit more involved than a simple sound mod. Archery is actually way more involved than it looks.

RedBaron

Maybe you should write Bethesda a suggestion, they might actually listen, seeing as how they're very inspired by all the mods for their games. I thought about suggesting to them visual weapon decay for weapons that were gradually damaged and not repaired. The only game that I saw this done well in was Far Cry 2, and the game itself was horrible, lol

Perhaps. But I have been underwhelmed by every Bethesda game I've ever played so far, the list of which is comprised of Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas. I'll be happy if they just get the characters looking proper, because that has traditionally been their weakest point. Low resolution textures is the next weakest link.

E: And story. They could take some cues from BioWare here. That said, BioWare has some story flaws they could work on, too, but they set the bar.

i have a lot of love and respect for bethesda for being so dedicated to giving the fans modding tools and allowing their games to be modded so far (ex. modding the executable with the script extender), and i went from not wanting to play morrowind when my friend first showed me it to clocking almost 150 hours in my first 2 weeks with it. loved almost everything about morrowind aside from the occasional collision glitches, and the combat. in total, i definitely have over 500 hours in morrowind, and thats a lot for me with any one game.

i picked up oblivion in 2008 i think for pc. was blown away by the graphics and ability to block, but honestly, now that i look back on it, the game holds your hand when it comes to going places, and auto travel makes the big open world less of a thing you have to tackle and more of a pretty place to look at. i enjoyed morrowind a lot more where there was a big challenge to finding things and people. you had to pay attention and search. to me, that challenge made the game so much more satisfying. also, i love spears and crossbows to death. it makes me sad that oblivion doesnt have them. i hear skyrim brought back polearms though, so thats awesome.

overall, i feel like morrowind conveyed an environment a lot more convincingly than oblivion did. oblivion was pretty, and the ai conversations were cool at the time, but morrowind had much deeper story and gameplay in terms of rival factions and issues of race. that really brought me into the atmosphere.

so this whole tangent is my way of saying i love the elderscrolls series, but i hope skyrim can take the atmospheric elements of morrowind, make the game a little more mature than oblivion (race issues and the sort), make it beautiful, and have the combat not suck. the only reason i wont get it on release date is because elder scrolls games should not be bought on steam. the steam .exe has some weird steam anti-piracy thing in it, and the script extender modders wont crack it to avoid copyright, so theres a slew of awesome mods you cant play gone right there. also, i have no time, at all, and i just bought the stalker series and dead space 1 and 2. havent touched any of them yet. will get skyrim eventually though.

i identify with that 50inch tv thing too.

Waiting for a sale, never going to support $60 for a standard edition of a PC game. If they were to throw in meaningful limited-edition extras, then maybe. I loved the extras in the augmented edition of Deus Ex Human Revolution, and even that didn't cost me $60 (preorder discount 10%).

I did enjoy Oblivion and Morrowind though, just never had much incentive to try mods or replay the game.

Bethesda didn't put any care into the PC version. For me, the framerate is way more sluggish than it should be for the settings it's at, and even at max settings the game looks like shit compared to either BF3 or DXHR. I'm disappointed in their lack of optimization on this ancient shitty engine.

Also, they put absolutely NO THOUGHT AT ALL into their UI design. It looks nice, but it's designed for consoles. The mouse practically has no use in the UI at all...you need to use your keyboard. I don't know what the fuck they were thinking.

Oh. My. God.

I give up. I can't play this shit.

The UI is impossible to navigate. It makes no fucking sense whatsoever. You know how you have a mouse pointer, right? Well guess what? It doesn't do shit. You need to use the WASD keys to navigate the menu. You can click on any menu item as much as you want, but it won't do anything unless you select it with your keyboard first. There's not even any consistency either. Some things you need to click on, some things you need to press enter. Also, if you hit "i" to open up your inventory, you think you can close the screen just by pressing escape? WRONG.

I'm not going to buy this game, and I refuse to play it until it's finally patched.

Fuck Bethesda. Fucking console sellouts.

This game also has mouse acceleration enabled by default, with no way of disabling it from the in-game settings. Fuck everything about this.

You can change it by editing SkyrimPrefs.ini in the Skyrim root directory, changing bMouseAcceleration=1 to 0.

Also, rumor has it that the issue of being unable to click on menu items is isolated to the pirated version of the game. Earlier I was told that the retail version was the same, which got me totally bent out of shape over it. If that's not an issue, I won't be as mad (though the UI is still total shit since you can't even compare inventories while looting).

I still stand my ground saying this engine is horseshit though. Should have been tossed out 5 years ago.

Graphics looks fine, don't see how it's worse than DXHR. It uses a different artistic design and colour palette.

I'm in the same boat as you. This is what I meant when I was complaining about performance. Even though the 6xxx series of cards isn't as powerful as the 5xxx series, the 6970 should still have plenty of horsepower to play at way more than 30 FPS on its highest settings. I also noticed that regardless of whether I play on medium or ultra, no AA or 8x AA, I get <30 FPS. I don't know if this is the card, the drivers, or the engine. I want to lean towards the engine because other games that are more graphically intensive play better.

Also, I only have shit FPS outdoors, whereas indoors it's >50 always.

No idea how, unless you spend all of your time indoors and not outside.

I updated my drivers to the latest release (11.10, 10/31) and there's no improvement over 11.9. For me, the difference between medium (no AA and AF at all) and ultra (full AA and AF) is about 5 FPS. I keep replaying the intro sequence of the game over and over as a baseline for comparison. On medium I'll get about 32 FPS average, while on ultra I get about 26 average. Entering the fort, I struggle to pull 20 FPS. It's a joke.

Indoors I max out at 60 FPS (locked by vsync...no I will not disable it because I dislike tearing).

I have no idea what I can do other than wait.

Does it really matter though, or is it just placebo? I'm asking because I don't know. If your monitor is incapable of refreshing the image being sent more than 60 times per second, why does it care if you are sending 125 frames in the same timespan? The only thing disabling vsync has ever done for me is produce a picture that looks like this when anything is fast moving:

http://datan.org/files/dev2/tearing-halo1.jpg

And as for "feeling" it, maybe that's true. Technically the game should be doing its thing regardless of whatever the rendering framerate is, but I guess it depends on the engine?

I supposed if a game is created "incorrectly" a game with a higher FPS would have more precise physics and what not... but I can't see that happening in Skyrim or an retail game for that matter.

It really matters. Idk how to describe it, but the input is noticeably faster for me with higher fps. As for Quake 3 in particular, it's absolutely true

Other games might not do anything so drastic as affect the player physics, but it still makes a difference.

you know, i was upset at first that i couldnt get this on release date, but the more i hear about it and see, the less bad i feel. the combat system looks like it kicks ass, but of course after oblivion what doesnt? the menu looks atrocious, and oblivion's menu system has pissed me off more than a little bit in the past. how do devs do this? repeatedly fucking up like this, especially a dev like bethesda thats known for paying attention to the community.

play morrowind, even if for a few minutes, just to check out its menu system and bartering system and all that. the UI for that, while it isnt quite so pretty, allows for resizing of windows, and having everything in one, easy to use place. to be quite honest, i have yet to see anything in gaming that rivals morrowind's item menu, and nothing even comes CLOSE to the bartering system. i just dont get how a company goes from something so great to fucking up so badly. come on.

Since this is an RPG game, the following logic applies:

1. Download the game and crack it. Apply any updates that are cracked to make sure that you have the least broken version of the game
2. Play it and decide if it's something you find you'd spend a lot of time on.
3. Buy it if you think it's worthy of your attention or delete it if you're not interested in it anymore.

Problem solved.

That's because you can become STUPIDLY good with bows. Then again you can become stupidly good at anything. Just read all the fucking perks. I just got one for sneak that allows sneak attacks with daggers to do FIFTEEN times normal damage. The final perk for master sneak allows you to enter Sneak Mode while in combat and your target will literally lose track of you. Giving you ample opportunity to hit him with previously said OP dagger sneak attack.

E: Game is awesome.

Google around for how to mod 3rd party hard drives to work in a 360. Just re-use the enclosure from your current 20 GB hard drive. Don't know of anyone who got banned for doing this, but it's less obvious if you use a drive size that's 250 GB or less.

Probably the coolest thing you can do that I also only recent found out is blasting away clouds using Clear Skies. I thought it was just for that one quest. It's goddamn amazing clearing the clouds away on an overcast night to reveal a massive green aurora.

The College of Winterhold is pretty much the main magic place. There is no spellcrafting in this game though.

Idk if it's been posted or not... but has anybody seen the recent news about Skyrim? The land masses for the other areas from the other games are all present within Skyrim. Upon switching to no clip mode, you can get to Cyrodiil as well as Morrowind. Interesting..

I noticed that there were a few good mods being made, so I started experimenting. HD textures + HDR + visual bloom + realistic water shaders + higher-res night sky + realistic color tinting:

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3006/tesv2011112922004633.jpg

It's a tad dark due to the day/night tinting feature, but that's actually fairly realistic. Night time was pretty bright, even in caves.

With the exception of the tower from Oblivion, no.

Hey, kids

Creation Kit — Beginning in January, PC players will be able to download the same development tools we used at Bethesda Game Studios to create Skyrim. In tandem with the Creation Kit’s release, we will roll out a new Wiki and videos to help you get started.

That song needs to be a part of that entire sequence in the actual game. Like seriously, if someone goes out and does that, that exact song must play.

As far as I can tell, not really. Every game is independent of the previous, I can't find any references to Oblivion gates in what little I've played.

youll miss a few offhanded references and wont have a frame for some of the stuff you read in the books you find lying around, but in my elder scrolls experience, not playing the previous game has little impact on how much youll enjoy the game. certainly not a reason to even consider not playing the game.

There is a Steam sale for Oblivion going on right now till tomorrow at 12:00PM if you can muscle $4.99. Since everyone is saying that there are some slight references, I'm already planning to see what Oblivion has to offer.

i will forever enjoy oblivion as an exploration game that ill never finish with dungeons where kills are achieved by sneak attacks that are lined up with hours of watching the AI's movement paths and slowly moving through the shadows.

open combat can fuck itself with bent re-bar. that goes doubly so for those dremora fucks.
E: and ill forever enjoy morrowind as a game i cant beat. so many add ons....

So far Oblivion is fun, but it leaves a shit ton unexplained as far as Magic Schools, Guilds, and enemy factions are concerned. You kind of have to poke around for yourself to find out what's what. It also just has random places thrown here and there that have no relevance to quests (I'm looking at half of the forts here). Over-encumberance is also a bitch, even more so than in the Fallout series. This makes me want Skyrim even more though, mainly because I'm looking forward to everything Bethesda improved on from Oblivion and the Fallout series' quirks.

I just found a black soul gem in Blackreach. Does this thing have a higher charge than a grand soul gem?

Siliconmaster
December 11th, 2011, 08:47 PM
Black soul gems can capture human souls, unlike grand gems which can only capture creatures. If you get the Black Star, it can capture any soul if you choose black souls over lesser souls. It is also reusable. Normal black soul gems are one-use-only.

Edit: Black souls are also the same power as grand souls, I believe.
