View Full Version : LOOK AT THIS BEAR

ITS HUGE.
I got an email this morning from a guy at my work...
Big Bear shot Saddle Hills Alberta, Sept 20/2010
These two gents were calling elk in the Saddle Hills south of woking when this big guy slipped in on the caller. The shooter spotted the bear 8 yards from the caller and dropped him with 5 shots out of his 338 Rem Mag.. Farmers in the area knew about the Bear but weren't able to track it after it had killed 3 horses, 5 cows, 13 sheep and a pen full of chickens on several different homesteads in the area. Fish and wildlife had bear traps set up in the area but noticed on surveillance video that when ever a he would enter his hump would hit the top of the culvert trap slowing him enough that the trap door would wack him on the head before he was all the way in check out the scar tissue on his face
. Bear weighed in just under 1300 pounds and would have stood 11 ¾ feet tall on its hind legs
..
I spoiled it because I guess some pictures could be graphic for some people, hippies.

When you're out calling for Elk and a bear pops in near you it means he's hungry for Elk. He's not going to pass up a couple of bite-sized humans. This coming from an actual big-game hunter for 8+ years now.

Why do bear-related threads always turn to puns? It kinda polarises me, because the puns tend to sit unbearably on the normal discussion.

Holy shit that bear is huge! One hell of a kill right there. I'm not a huge fan of predator hunting, but I always think big bears are amazing. Honestly, at 8 yards that is a worthy kill, but I'm not a fan of people who go out of their way to bait bears or use dogs. I buy my bear tag every year in case they just come up while Im at camp or out deer hunting, but I am not a fan for sure.

Rare? I dont think so. I've seen 18 black bears over the course of my 19 years. Most bears simply live away from civilization. Go to Alaska and hear about how "rare" big bears are in the wild. A bear, even a big one, is not a rare animal by any means, sir.
Cortexian

Not to sound like a jerk hunter, would it have been any better were it to die of natural causes? I mean, what would be the difference? Unless these guys are some of the idiots who won't eat bear meat, I have a hard time comprehending why it would be better or worse either way.

Nope, calling male bears "boars" and females "sows" is a very VERY regional nickname scheme. Where-as calling Male Elk/Moose Bulls and females "Cows" is a generic terminology. Same with Bucks and Does for deer.
Someone brought this up in our hunter ed course years and years ago, the bear nicknames are regional.
Anyhow, someone mentioned eating bear meat (or not for some reason). There's a very good reason for not eating beat meat, some of it, especially Grizzly, can be downright disgusting and uneatable due to disease and rot. Yes, rot. Grizzly's will eat pretty much anything, doesn't matter if it's roadkill or decomposing garbage. You need to check bear meat extremely carefully for gross shit before you get it all butchered up into tasty foodstuffs.
TVTyrant
January 17th, 2011, 07:07 PM
The regional thing is very interesting. Perhaps it's US only? Because I know a large number of people across the states who hunt, and whenever they refer to a bear male they call it a boar. As far as I saw through checking the internet though, the term seems really widespread to me. It seems strange to me that it would be regional since I have never heard another way to refer to the gndcer of Bears, and there are terms that are widespread across the entire animal kingdom (alot of things are called bulls or cows).
The meat thing is yeah, exactly like that. It just saddens me when people shoot animals and don't eat them. The whole reason I hunt or is is to avoid the pos meat they sell in the stores in the States. Game meat (for the most part) is much healthier than store bought meat, and my experience with bear (of course black bear since we dont have the brown varieties) has been very tasty if a bit stringy.

very regional as in North America? In Russia/Asia they call Elk "deer"...doesn't matter. the terminology is still correct.
For taste I won't lie, good ole feed-lot-antibiotic-USDA-approved-beef is the best. But it is horrible for you, for the environment, and for the country.I still eat hamburger for certain meals but the rest is all venison and the rabbit we raise. We also recently received a huge hunk of bear fat from a friend. Pastry chefs will buy bear fat at a premium. We made pancakes with it and it's very good.

Really? Then I want to see the regs language for cubs and such. I know here any boar bear is legal, or any sow as long as they do not have cubs. A sow with cubs is illegal to take. Thats the way the language in the regs is. How do they define there?
Fake E: On the deer thing, in Asia (the only other part of the world where there are natural wapiti elk) they are called deer. In Norway the term Elk refers to moose. Just like Reindeer and Caribou refer to animals so closely related they are interchangeable.

Like saying Coues Deer of the southwest aren't just small whitetail. If they breed together, have the same social patterns, and look the same, they are the same animal by the measure of science.
HOWEVER as far as reindeer/caribou go I am not personally convinced they are the same animal. The antler shape is very different between them, which always makes me question why they are called either way by biologists.
I didn't say they were the same anyways. I said science considers the names interchangeable.
