View Full Version : Bungie confirm their next game isn't an MMO

Speaking at a panel at GDC today, Bungie’s lead network engineer David Aldrige has announced that their next game will be an MMO. Aldrige also pointed out that, contrary to popular belief (http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/17/rumour-bungies-next-game-will-be-wow-in-space/), the game won’t be “WoW in space.” Probably be more like Halo in Azeroth then. Lol.
At GDC last year Bungie’s creative director Joe Staten was asked what Bungie’s next game would be, saying: “Wouldn’t it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you? Wow. That would be great.”
The new series, which is yet to be named, will be published under Activision.

an activision game possibly worth buying?

We don't know a thing about this game besides that it's an MMO that will most likely be P2P. Got enough of those.

Well that's lame...too many MMOs these days, I was expecting something more single-player based.

Another MMO in Activision's pocket? That's exactly what we need.

Can't you guys, and the rest of the fucking brick shitting internet, wait until Bungie has something official to say about Aerospace before getting all hot and heavy?

In the bad way

This will be interesting, considering Bungie's only ever done RTSes and FPS... I'm interested in what makes them think that this game will make this one stand out.

You know what, korn's right, all we have right now to go on is that it will be massive, have multiplayer, and be online. They didn't say anything about it being an RPG, or anything else for that matter. All we know is that it won't be World of Warcraft in space and that it won't be Halo.

I'm going to hold any judgemet for the gameplay footage.

And look at the bright side, it's probably going to be cross-platform, so we might finally get a new Bungie game on the PC.

I believe they said it was an action game. Again, not very helpful.

Could be interesting if they did an MMO. I'd like to see what art direction they go in following the end of the Halo series. Maybe they go for more of a fantasy element than a science fiction theme.

I want them to do a casual EvE Online so I can enjoy it too :downs:

No. Please no. The MMO space is over-saturated with fantasy-themed titles. It desperately needs something else, be it a sci-fi universe, a real-world, or a parallel world.

Will suck. Activision plus an old tech game appearing late in the current console cycle.

It'll be left in the dirt, once blizzard have their next mmo up in multiplat.

It'll be left in the dirt, once blizzard have their next mmo up in multiplat.Bungie contracts for Activision; Blizzard is OWNED by them. And "old tech"? Blizzard is the patent holder of "Old Tech". What is your point, exactly?

Bungie's tech is hardly dated. They just have different technical objectives and spend the available system resources on things most game companies skimp on.

And we have no idea when this game will release. If it is truly "Massive", it could easily take 5 years and ship in the next generation. Even if it comes out on current platforms, it will simply put more of the emphasis on the PC version, which was probably going to be doing the heavy lifting anyway, given the nature of persistent online gaming.

Perhaps something similar to MAG but with a better leveling system? I've always thought it was lame in shooters that you didn't earn extra points for killing high level people.

He's not talking about Halo Wars. He's talking about Myth from way back in '97.

Bungie's made more games than just Halo and Marathon you know :P

On that note, wasn't ONI an action game as well? I've never seen it in person or any videos, so don't quote me on that.

Yeah, it was a third-person anime-themed brawler with gunplay.

Did you even read the message that came up when you clicked play? It says the video's owner doesn't allow it to be embedded into webpages. There's even a button that says "Watch on Youtube."

I've got it on Mac/PC. I've only played the Mac version so far, but it is pretty interesting. You'll notice quite a few things which end up getting carried over into Halo1...

Bungie made the RTS franchise Myth.
Not to mention that Halo started off as an RTS

Like it's been stated before, we really don't know anything new. A news site just ate the (few) words spoken at a GDC presentation and ran with it. This is basically a news site going "FIRST!!1".

I'm not ragging on the game, just the fact that Activision will have another "easy money" title to cough up cash into its grimy coffers.

I should have trusted my initial instinct to disbelieve this report. Game journalists are dumb as shit and don't know what they're talking about and we as enthusiasts are dumb as shit and don't know what we're talking about. It's a bad combination.

Bungie’s new MMO announcement was a joke

Last week at GDC Bungie network engineer David Aldrige seemed to announce (http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/03/04/bungie-confirm-their-next-game-is-an-mmo/) that Bungie’s next project would be an MMO, apparently confirming that recent rumours (http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/17/rumour-bungies-next-game-will-be-wow-in-space/) of such a project were true. According to a new post on Bungie.net (http://www.bungie.net/news/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=30859), the mention of a Bungie MMO was intended as a joke lol.
Bungie representative Urk wrote that “in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors.” In a published internal email, spotted by Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/#%215777224/halo-creator-not-doing-a-mmo), Aldrige says “the tape will exonerate me, but I’m sorry anyway.” Bungie haven’t explicitly denied that they’re working on an MMO, but it looks as though last week’s confirmation was bogus.

I'm glad to hear that, but I dunno how much of a difference it would have made anyway. After impulse buying Reach and being extremely disappointed with it, their next game is going to have to really blow me away for me to want to buy it.

Whatever their next project is, I'm still up for it. Loved Halo 1, 2, 3 and Reach, and even though I couldn't find my way around Marathon, it was still an enjoyable game.

More like rigged by the editors because they want to believe the game is awesome and can't bring themselves to say it's mediocre. You were close, though.

When any of the Resistance games got an 80 or more thats when I knew it was rigged. A PS2 game with late XBox level graphics does not deserve an 89. In the same magazine they gave Medieval Total War 2 like a 81. Pathetic.

Basically the same thing. They're telling everyone what they want to hear (which boosts sales).

Kornman00
March 9th, 2011, 09:11 PM
Or you just rent the game and decide how you feel about the fucking thing because all p/reviews end up being biased in some way.

On that same note, you also can't knock on a game until you've play it (or until there's even any fucking info about it, in the case of this situation). Bungie aren't ones about massing out a game every year. They're about quality, not quantity. They make games they want to play, while listening to their user base. Bungie is an employee owned company, not a company owned and controlled by an organization. Activision is just a publisher for their next game; they're not in control. An organization is no longer calling the shots for their games (eg, Halo 3) or the games they're getting paid to make (ie, Reach).

Basically, Bungie is unlike 99% of the professional game studios in the industry and shouldn't be held with the same stigmas that plague other games and their studios.

Yahtzee is funny sometimes, but completely worthless as a serious reviewer. I wasn't a huge fan of Halo 3, but his Halo 3 review was full of blatantly incorrect assertions (he's also made completely incorrect statements about Halo in a number of other reviews). Which I wouldn't mind if he wasn't trying to pass himself off as a real critic.
