Not yet. Probably going to go get a hard copy though. Still have Crysis 2 to buy (haters gonna hate) then Portal 2. I hate that even though Valve has completely abandoned Episode 3, that I still want to buy this game. There better be some more references to Half-Life, or I'm going to go insane.

Valve should use this as an opportunity to lambast consoles as having more uncontrollable piracy than PCs, claiming their Steam platform on PC is perfect at preventing games leaking before their release date.

Bodzilla

you guys miss the point.

Steam DRM isnt about stopping piracy, and it hasnt been for a long long time.
if it was they would have been constantly trying to thwart the pirates, which as we all know is an ultimately pointless, fruitless and stupid idea.

so they took it and tried to turn it into a service, Friends lists across games, community's, Mac/PC support ect ect.
Steam try's it's hardest and succeeds to concentrate on just about every other area to minimize the effect of the DRM.

Thats why piracy isnt an issue for them.

I don't believe it. Unless Valve did something stupid with the physical DVD version of the game, the game should be in an encrypted package file. While you may be able to unpack 99.9% of the game, the most important files (like the actual exe) hasn't been released by Valve yet, which will be done through a game update on release day. What you probably found was just the pre-load stuff.

Okay. For those of you who may not know. The Valve Potato ARG led up to a possible early release. It requires people to play the games in the Potato Sack Pack. But if you already own one of the games you can play it. For some instructions on how to help go here: http://valvearg.com/wiki/Valve_ARG_Wiki For the countdown site go here: http://www.aperturescience.com/glados@home/

They also can be left in idle, as long as you close them and reopen them so steam counts it. Play the games that aren't already beat to help out. For those of us who didn't get it early and want it the fun way.

I'm liking the game so far. Like the first, I think the humor makes the game. There seems to be more to chew on in terms of puzzle elements this time, but no puzzle has been particularly stumping or memorable thus far.

So far, it feels less oppressive than the first. I don't feel nearly as claustrophobic. And I'm glad they smoothed out some of the rough edges with the portal mechanics. I still wouldn't call this a favorite game, though. I just don't delight in being cast as a rat in a maze, I guess. The portal gimmick is old hat. But as something I'll play once and remember for the humor, I'm enjoying it.

To those flipping over robot enrichment-- you realize you don't have to buy the in game items. You can pick up a game of coop with a friend you know and not give two shits about the robot customizations.

For TF2 yeah it's pretty damn intrusive but for a game like Portal 2 it's kinda pointless for them to even throw it in there, gabe must be trolling. They don't seem to want to touch counter strike/l4d with hats for some reason though.

Warsaw
April 19th, 2011, 09:19 PM
The general uprising that would inevitably follow if they modified Counter-Strike would destroy the world three times over. That would be like taking WoW and turning it into a good-looking, modern warfare game.

ejburke
April 20th, 2011, 12:05 PM
Finished the game last night. The puzzles got really good toward the end, just as the humor fizzled out. Oh well. I enjoyed this much more than the first Portal and I liked Portal 1. But in that game, they pretty much had one interesting puzzle solving mechanic (the fling) and they wore it the fuck out. This time, there are more interesting and varied solutions.

And as I mentioned previously, I LOVE the fact that I can breath in this game's more open, lively environments. I'm not even claustrophobic, really, but playing the first game just made me feel uncomfortable, like I was buried alive or something. I just wanted to get out and for it to be over. This time was much more about enjoying the ride for me.

By the way, this game marks "Undeserved Internet Shitstorm #4356623565234625". Seems like these things are happening more and more often with less and less provocation. I wish the internet would realize it's assholes and get some help.

Got done playing this morning also, the game was pretty funny (probably one of the funniest games I've played in a long time) and also very fun. Only parts that were annoying were areas when you got further underground and had to find the smallest area to shoot a portal on, jump off, and then fly somewhere else only to do it again in the next 5 minutes. Other wise, I liked it. Story was much more fleshed out I feel than the first, not to mention the graphics were greatly improved.

They did a great job of going through the years showing Aperture Science in different stages, gonna take another play thru for sure though to catch everything. Hoping to get into some portal 2 map making, made a few maps for portal 1 but the tools were pretty crappy (shit made prefabs) I hope portal 2 comes with some decent like prebuild items.

By the way, you buy stuff in-game, is that in-game money? Or real life money?

Turns out kornman is gay and hasnt played Portal 1, so he doesnt have Portal 2....Anyone here not played alot of co-op that wants to burn it up with me?

Yeah funneling, Portal 1 didnt have it or at least it was very weak. Funneling is when the game auto aligns you to the centre of the portal when you are falling, but it makes flinging really awkward with the way I play. I'm used to Portal 1's.

Siliconmaster
April 21st, 2011, 05:56 PM
I don't mind the funneling- it makes the puzzles a lot easier for me *shrug*

Also, The moon thing at first was a little weird to me, even if it was awesome, but when coupled with the earlier setup of the moon rock, it makes perfect awesome sense. I love Valve.

Okay, so gladOS pretending she still hates you. HAHA at the animal king that doesn't respond to reason... If you didn't get the cheetah-styled giant turret part go replay the game. Also, I'm sad as theres no way to know about the portal gun. I hope the character still had a portal gun... somehow. I also loved the weighted companion cube at the end.

At the bottom of the map they said that the tests contained hints of time travel... which leaves an open door for the next game perhaps? Also, loved the potato thing.

Overall, I loved the game. I have no complaints about the gameplay at all. My only grievances are technical.

1. I really hate that there's a loading screen after every test chamber. While running on the catwalks, you can pass through 3 loading screens in 3 minutes. It began to get ridiculous. I really wish Valve would just invest in improving the caching and streaming of resources. It's practically the only thing about the Source engine that puts it behind other game engines of today. Unfortunately, I believe the main reason for so many loading screen was due to the limitations of consoles.

2. The ending. I'm not talking about the plot, but rather the cutscene. Seriously, Valve, what gives? What is this pre-rendered crap? Since Half Life 1, they have always done cutscenes in-game. Even with their impressive special effects they first showed off in with Half Life 1, they didn't use pre-rendered video when it would have been much easier. So, why take a step backwards now? The ending cutscene is nothing that the engine can't handle. In fact, the stalemate cutscene was way more intense than the pre-rendered video. My best guess blames consoles yet again for their loading limitations. Maybe the loaded zone of the final battle was pushing limits as it was, and they didn't want to have yet another loading screen between cutscenes?

Also, I have some questions:
1. In the final battle with Wheatly, the ceiling breaks away and you see the moon in the sky. Well, wouldn't that imply that they were pretty much on the surface? If that was so, then what's the deal with the mile-long elevator ride in the final cutscene?

2. In Portal 1, you were sucked out in a tornado-force wind and brought to the surface. You land in the Aperture Science parking lot, and you clearly see there's hills around you. When you make it to the surface in Portal 2, it's plains. There's not a single mountain in sight and there's no parking lot anywhere. Is this supposed to mean something? I know it's several hundred years after the first game, so there's a good chance that the parking lot was overgrown, but why aren't there any hills?

Well it was called tunneling in Portal 1, either way it tunnels/funnels you into the next portal, yet Portal 2s seems to act strangely for me - Sometimes it makes me hit the edge of the portal on the floor, and I just stop dead, you literally stop moving forward and just start falling down. Portal 1 which had a direct switch on in the menu iirc. Portal 2 has a developer console command, so I'll probably use that and turn it off.

I'm not sure if its in co-op, I assume its throughout portal 2, I've only played the SP.

Try setting this command, and play a level where you have to do alot of flinging, "sv_player_funnel_into_portals" = "0". Tell me if you notice any difference.

1) GLaDOS can move around and relocate the rooms as she sees fit... and you were out for a while after the fight. (Long enough for the Coop Bots to get there... or maybe she moved the room TO the Coop Bots...).

Other games manage to get around the consoles limited ram just fine. The problem lies with Valve. Although I do agree that the apparently frozen console generation has limited game improvement as a whole. That and PC > Console

After looking back, the only thing that I hated the most out of this game is that they gave no information on Black Mesa (or Half Life 3, so to speak), other than Cave Johnson screaming about how he didn't like them, or the outside world other than "It's been a few hundred years".

Agreed, but I'm ok with it. It gives some purpose to the co-op campaign, and it also opens up the door for Portal 3 in case Valve wants to make it.

Its possible, using the Alien Swarm SDK, but its quite a hacked in way and when using the SDK things don't appear correctly, so its hard to master :D

I love this game to death. This was amazing!

However, I need to know something...

Does anyone see 343 Guilty Spark in Wheatley?
I mean, not only does he look like him, but he's your ally at first but then he's your enemy when the truth about him is revealed. Just food for thought.

If you're going to watch a trailer showing gameplay from campaign then you've no excuse to complain that the trailer had spoilers.

Do you actually understand the concept of spoilers? Its not just "this happens in the game". A spoiler is something that will spoil the game plot dramatically.

If you watch a game trailer and it shows you can hide behind walls GoW style, thats not a spoiler. If however the trailer shows boss X and how you defeat him and the resulting cutscene - That is a spoiler.

I have seen hundreds of trailers that do not show spoilers. I'd have to say Elite Killa's post is easily the biggest story event in the game, it is a massive spoiler.

Use your brain Warlord, otherwise you will turn into Dwood.

So wait, a gameplay trailer which happens to show characters or event's seen in the campaign that may spoil the storyline aren't actually spoilers?

You've already turned into Dwood.
Apparently you're completely blind either that or lack the capability to notice spoilers in trailers, which is something many developers suggest "going dark" few weeks before title release due to spoilers in trailers.

Let's play count the spoilers in campaign trailers.

Warlord can you please do be a favour and re-read my post which explains what a spoiler is. In fact, for your simple minded brain, I'll quote it in case you cannot spare brain power to go back and read.

There were no spoilers whatsoever in the three trailers you posted. The co-op only showed one puzzle that was actually in the game. Every other puzzle within the three trailers you posted are not in the standard retail version.

I actually find it funny you tried to trump me with some poorly thoughout reply about how Valve manages to spoil their own game. When even in Portal 1, barely any of the content that was in the trailers was actually in the final game. Even the character in the trailers, you didnt play as in the final game.

You probably are basing your whole retort on the fact Glados comes back to life, and that is in the trailer. Valve has been completely transparent in saying Portal 2 glados comes back - I believe they used the words similar to "you meet an old friend, or you're reunited with an old friend".

The E3 trailer, which I believe was one, if not the announcement trailer for Portal 2, which you even posted - is the one that introduces Glados back into the game, making your attempt at claiming it a spoiler completely ludicrous.

Warlord comparing you do Dwood is actually insulting Dwood. Your making yourself look like a complete tit.

Reviving dead thread~

I've noticed that this game has a command called mat_object_motion_blur_enable.
Now I'm playing on my laptop and I've limited my FPS to 30 (I prefer stable framerates) so no moblur gets rendered whatsoever but can anyone test it out and see if it does do what it says?

So in case you've been living under a rock. The Portal 2 editor came out today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGWaCXm3_74&feature=fvsr

And so I made a level. I suggest you do too. It's a great editor and I certainly hope they continue to update it with more stuff. Mostly visual stuff like decals, lights, and I would like stuff to automatically come up when you're near it instead of everything having to have a button thing. But this thing is fun as hell compared to screwing with hammer.

My level:
