View Full Version : That teaches me for buying an Apple product...

So my phone contract was at the point where I could change it without a cancellation cost yesterday and get a new phone. Decided to replace my Blackberry Storm for an iPhone 4 32GB. Error on network registration right out of the box at the store, the sales guy tells me it should start working within 12 hours.

Call them at the 12 hour mark today, now they're saying there was a big problem with my SIM registration and now it's lost in limbo on the network somewhere. Apparently there system shows it as up and running, yet the phone shows no service. Great experience so far Telus.

Now, this is obviously not the iPhones fault, but I thought it was pretty ironic... The fact that I've been boycotting them for so long, then when I finally cave to get one the network complete screws the registration up. I need a phone that 'just works' all the time. I sometimes NEED to have mobile access for texting, email, browsing, and regular calls and this is the reason I bought an iPhone instead of something cool like an HTC HD (was debating between the two).

Anyhow, any suggestions on how I should try and deal with my network? I mean, they've got to owe me something for this... The Blackberry has been working this whole time, so I haven't been denied service, but I just upgrade my phone and contract and they completely destroy it.

Nothing like having a worthless, locked down, iPhone!

Venturing OT here, but I'm considering getting an Android-based tablet instead of having to deal with Apple's mess. The only reason I've even kept with my iTouch is due to the amount of DRM'd music and videos I've got off iTunes.

Other than that, I have nothing worthwhile to contribute to this thread, nor do I have any experience with Canadian phone contracts.

Ouch that sucks, I'd go back to the place you picked it up from a give them hell (say you've been a customer for x mount of time and your pretty disgusted they are trying their best to get it fixed).

Tell them you plan to move your place to another provider if necessary (that will get their arses into gear)

I'm totally jealous though, want an iPhone so bad, yet it will cost a bomb AND the new one is coming out soon.

You could always install Android on it (LOLS!)

edit: Wow, I totally cannot find those websites anymore.

edit2: Wow again... the very next search (after ~10 minutes before conceding to edit 1) I found it.

I still find it quite funny that everyone I know complains about the iphone/itouch, yet I've had mine for almost 3 (2?) years now, and never ever had a problem with it.

What I would do is go to the actual store and get it working... (not the apple store either, AT&T store (verizon?) They should be able to get it working there within minutes if you tell em' too.

I've had random restart issues (really annoying when it happens in mid-song/playlist) with my iTouch and the battery life is starting to fade (as it goes with all things battery powered). I have the first model to sport 32GB of storage so I'm stuck at iOS 2.2 or w/e, so that restart bullshit may have been a fix in a later update.

However, I stand by the claim that the fucking non-configurable song sorting in iOS is a mother fucking bug, bug, bug, bug, bug, bug and that I should be able to have an artist's "All songs" show songs in album order, not in some bullshit ABC order. Fucking christ, it wasn't broke in the iPod, they didn't need to "fix" it.

Therefore Apple sucks teh wang and Masters1337 with them.

Telus. There's your problem. I was with them for 3 years. They suck. Rogers is a bunch of douches but at least their shit works.

Yeah, like I said I was seriously considering going with HTC HD instead of this but every time I stray away from the norm I always end up getting some plague ridden device that doesn't work half the time and ends up being very unstable (Blackberry Storm). I have friends with iPhones on both Rodgers AND Telus and the phone seems to simply work without issue most of the time, it may be locked down but that doesn't concern me since I'm not a programmer. The apps I want work well and that's all I really care about, especially since the main communications features are very easy to use on the iPhone (Phone, text, email, browser, etc).

I plan to give Telus an earful tomorrow if the phone isn't activated by the time I get it turned on. So will my dad since we're on a family plan and he's been with them for over 10 years, he's obviously not happen with the way they're handling this either. I'm really not sure what to push them for though as compensation, I mean I've had service for this whole time since my Blackberry is still working but I don't have the ability to use the new iPhone yet.

I was over at a friends today while he installed a ZAGG Invisible Shield on my iPhone (he has his own personal supply of these things and installs them for friends like it's a business or something). Interestingly enough, after it was installed we booted up the iPhone to make sure it was working, when we turned it off again (you're supposed to leave it off for 24 hours after shield installation to let it adhere) it just kept turning itself back on. We tried hard-resetting it, same result though and it just turned itself back on. When we left it on is kept kicking itself out of sleep mode for awhile to. This went on for about 30 minutes, then all of a sudden it stayed off when I shut it off.

So I'm going to leave it off for the ZAGG recommended 24 hours now, then I'll play with it tomorrow and see if it's still acting up. If it is I'll just head to the Apple store and get a brand new one for nothing since I decided to pickup the AppleCare Protection Plan. At this point it seems like that $70 2 year protection plan may be worth it...

Personally, I would of waited to get the iphone till the next one came out. It seems almost pointless to get one now thats nearly at the end of its life. Other than that, not much to contribute to this thread as I'm a huge Android fanboy.

Waiting to get a phone doesn't work when your contract doesn't sync with the next release.

And my Storm was literally complete shit, froze completely at least once a day requiring battery pull and reboot, and the UI software is garbage.

Take the battery out if it turns on by itself. I'm not surprised, though. I've heard a few cases about these sort of things happening.

Use a cheap pay-as-you-go phone until the new iPhone comes out? I dunno. Really blows about the SIM limbo. Sounds like it could use a kick.

Well, if it turns on and is working later today (7 hours to go for invisible shield to set) I don't think I'll ever turn it off intentionally. No real reason to since the idle time and general battery life is more than enough, especially if you're religious about charging the phone every night like I am. So the shutdown and automatic start-up isn't really an issue for me, but it could be a sign of a larger hardware issue.

Anyway, got this now so I'm locked into it for about 2 years now. I have a hunch that the iPhone 5 won't have any improvements that I'll care about anyways. I did my research on the current gen phones and this does everything I want it to and a bit more.

Btw, does anyone here use quite a lot of data? If so, what is your monthly data usage? I got a 1GB cap per month plan, which should be more than enough as I was averaging 50-80MB a month with my Blackberry Storm.

Pretty sure the new iPhone will use the A5 chip but like you said, its not really going to be a huge leap, the new versions never are. You realise I now hate you as you've got the idea of buying an iPhone in my head now! :D

That's both a Blu-ray drive and an iPhone now. ;)

I turned the phone on a little early after reading some discussions about the 24 hour requirement on invisible shields being very excessive. Everything seems to be working now but it's still not activated on the network. At least I can use Wi-Fi and Skype to give me a general idea of all the phones capabilities.

The Storm doesn't display a lot of information compared to the iPhone. You're gonna end up using way more than 100MB. still, seeing as your usage was that low a month, you seem fine.

I don't plan to do Tethering or anything like that, and will probably only YouTube when in a Wi-Fi zone since I don't have the patience to wait the videos length for it to buffer on 3G. Will probably be using Skype a bit for video calling on 3G every now and then as well.

Apparently the issue was that the renewals department needed to look over my new phone plan since it was a very special customized plan. We only get it since we've been loyal customers for over 10 years with Telus and I talked to them a few months ago about it. The problem is that apparently they approved it back when we originally talked to them, which caused some kind of bounce-back in the activation system they had for the SIM and our account.

Basically my account had two phone plans tagged to it, one for the new plan and one for the old. Except the new one wasn't supposed to activate until I got the iPhone, but the guy in the store didn't read this right and tried to do a new activation or something. Pretty confusing if you ask me, they can't even seem to explain it without contradicting what another rep said...

It's all working now. I called to day and talked to a Customer Care representative, who then forwarded me to a Technical Support rep, who then sent me to a Loyalty Retention Department rep who was nice enough to give me $10 off the plan for the next 6 months because of this, and then forwarded me to a Channel Care rep which are the people that can actually push plans and changes through without checking with their superiors. The Channel Care rep told me to go into the store, get a new SIM from the guy, then call him back on his own personal line when it was installed so he could force it through.
