Government research says piracy not as harmful as industry claims.

The government of Switzerland has issued a statement declaring that it will not take action to alter current copyright laws allowing the downloading of music and movies for personal use. The statement is the result of a lengthy study conducted by the Swiss government into the impact of so-called “piracy” on the entertainment industry.

What that's pretty interesting.

Well, if there is a nation where you can keep everything private, it's Switzerland :P

If you live up there, no one is going to care anyway

I thought it was already illegal? Isn't that why it's called, you know, piracy?

People who can read have a clear advantage. :v:

It's normal to associate the words "downloading" "personal use" and "illegal".

so does this mean all those companies who use the excuse "we dont like piracy" as excuse for their shitty pc ports of multiplatform games (or lack thereof) are talking out their asses?

In Switzerland: Corporations lobby and the government performs an unbiased study into the subject matter.

In America: Corporations lobby and the government subcontracts a firm to commission a team to write a report to figure out what the hell to do about it.

Excuse or not, they obviously don't see the pc market as profitable, else they would put more money/work into them.

As I've always said, you can't lose revenue that was never there to start with. Nobody who's cheap enough to pirate your game ever would have bought it in the first place. You have to make a product worth buying for people to spend money on it. Hell, I've pirated games before to see if they were worth my money only to end up buying them later. If I hadn't pirated them and become hooked, I never would have bought them in the first place. Therefore piracy actually gained the developer money in that case.

A good chunk of piracy comes from across the pond. Localized versions of games generally come out months later and with shoddy translations. Easier and faster for "pirates" to crack the game and do any translations themselves. Most companies are just shitty at their jobs and don't deserve the fucking $60 for a floppy disc anyway.

Like Pooky said, people are going to pirate no matter what. Just like people are going to steal shit form retail stores no matter what. It's the cost of doing business.

Seriously. Make products that are worth paying for and people will buy them.

Yeah, it's not our fault these companies pay a shit ton of robots to "work" on a game that comes out a like a hot brute steamer in the end, then force us to pay the same price as if it was a gold nugget. Stop enabling the shitty developers, companies! They're the reason for pirates. Use shit, get shit. On.
