TLDR welcome to american internet censorship controlled by the entertainment industry. They now have the power to can shut down whatever domains they want if they feel it's linked to piracy or copyright infringement. Going to be voted on tomorrow I believe. Big-name supporters like Apple, EA, Nintendo, Sony, Activision, etc. Opposition includes Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, AOL, LinkedIn, eBay, Mozilla Corporation, the Brookings Institution, and human rights organizations such as Reporters Without Borders.

The beginning of iLife.

At the rate things have been going on Capitol Hill, this'll probably get passed regardless of the People's opinion.

Hope they know that the more they do in the name of protecting their profits, the harder their shit's going to get "stolen."

The moment it get's passed, I'm going to report as many of the sites that supported it for copyright violation as possible and get them shut down. I don't want them stealing my awesome song or even allowing people to steal my awesome song that could make me billions of dollars.

Hollywood and software giants are like giant aspies. They don't get the subtle hints that the stricter they license their media, the more it's going to get cracked and pirated, especially when the DRM gets in the way for legitimate end users/viewers.

I'm not saying I am or am not contributing to it, but if the bill gets passed, the results will probably be hilarious.

I know it's alphabetized, but I find it hilarious that Autodesk and Adobe are at the top. Two of the worst software monopolists right now. Sorry, I don't care how productive your software is, but paying $4000 for something intangible (like code) is a joke for non-studio purposes. How is a man supposed to teach himself to use your product so he can get a job, using your product (and therefore supporting it), if he can't afford the product at home to learn with?

Well, GoDaddy has hopped on the bandwagon and is supporting SOPA. Thanks to reddit, they're losing tens of thousands of domains daily as people switch out. On top of that, GoDaddy is easily one of the most infringing parties.

Doesn't change the fact that they're losing my business. In fact, I'd recommend that anyone who has switched away from Go Daddy remain so, as a warning to any company that would consider something like this in the future. Them changing their position after taking a loss only shows that profit is the most important factor for them, and not "to support security and stability of the internet". They had one shot at my business, and they blew it. Case closed.

Pretty much that, though they're just my domain registrar. I wanted a dotcom back in 05-06 and godaddy was cheap.

I'd find a new registrar but I'm fucking lazy, plus I owe them like $40 due to a bounced check + the yearly registration fee. Hell, the domain's sitting in dead water since it's not tied to any web space and I haven't had the time to make a new site.

The equivalent of this censor, this shit is back.

The Internet Kill Switch bill, officially called the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, gives the President the authority to police, censor and shut down parts of the Internet under a cyber emergency. While promoting the bill, Lieberman openly called for the U.S. to have the same ability to censor the Internet as China.

Yeah, you should stop being thick.

1.) I understand Gitmo closing was good. I never said its closing was not.

2.) Just because countries outside the U.S. have free health care does not mean it will work for the U.S. Our government sucks at running anything (look at our fucking Congress, bureaucracy, and how shitty current social benefits are), it is COMPLETELY UNFEASIBLE GIVEN OUR CURRENT ECONOMIC STATE AND WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO EVEN SUPPORT THIS BY 2014, and it fucks with every other non-governmental system (I know, I worked in an office that dealt with Medicaid and Medicare, both of which back everything up and cause a shitstorm of frustration for both the consumer and provider). On top of all of this, health care that the government would give us would do almost NOTHING to lower the prices of operations and whatnot people would go in for. Obamacare (or whatever the fuck you wanna call it) is a fraud.

3.) If your still stuck on GWB, then fucking get your head out of your ass. Talk about thick.

And Warsaw is right, although it is a lot more difficult to accomplish than originally intended.

No, it's not that, it's because it won't work. Too entirely different things. Our president worked with the bill because almost every liberal/Democratic in the country was exclaiming for it. Naturally, conservatives are against another expenditure as such (as it is a major leap in infrastructure changing), but the educated individuals here see that it won't work given the U.S.'s current circumstances regarding the economy and how much health care is corporate. Maybe one day in the future, but not now or within this decade.

In order for it to happen within a decade, you have to start working for it though. Thats what you're not understanding. These things don't just happen. Its not just a bill that gets passed and everything works out. There is work to be done. Steps to be taken. Its not magical.

1.) Government jobs in the U.S. are shit. As they are now, they do jackshit for the economy. They pay jackshit (though I'm not to exclude them simply because it IS a job) and give you benefits of jackshit (seriously, we've covered how horrible our government's current benefits are). Basically, here is the problem with your statement there: just because it works in Europe and Canada, doesn't mean it works in the U.S. You can take my statements as what you want, but considering you aren't taking the time to research both sides then this entire post is more or less wasting internet. Now if you're proposing we turn the Bureaucracy into the right track and fix it up, then I completely agree. The bureaucracy is a load of shit as is. However, government jobs do nothing for the U.S. economy when you delve into it all. That's part of being an entirely capitalist society.

2.) You don't live in the U.S. and are going by the "industry-fucks-its-consumers" mentality that every ass-mad-ranting American blogger curses about. The proper health insurance companies (yes, they exist) and certain sectors of the medical industry (the private sector is good, seek it out) are perfectly fine and reliable. My family is in the private sector of medical and I've worked for the private sector of medical. You're not skull-fucked until you reach the corporate-sector, which in case you have every right to be pissed. However, if you're smart and obtain good health insurance (Aflac is a great start) by researching before you bitch about it all, then you'll realize "Obamacare" is unnecessary. There is only one exception to the "Our government sucks with running healthcare" sentiment I rant on about and that's the Federal inclusion of Blue Cross Blue Shield in certain jobs, such as Education, though I don't entirely know the specifics behind it all in terms of how much involvement the government has. Here's the link in Wikipedia for it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Cross_Blue_Shield_Association

My dad is a college professor who is not on the tenure track, which is how I know a bit about Blue Cross Blue Shield as a medical insurance provider.

3.) This decade is not the appropriate time to setup nor attempt to operate ANOTHER social-benefit in the U.S. The economic is still in decay and our government is becoming more and more questionable. It needs massive reformation and an entire re-haul of the bureaucracy before tackling healthcare for everyone.

But enough about healthcare and Obama's inability to fulfill promises in a thread about SOPA. PM me if you want to continue this conversation.

They are more against bringing the Government into something which can be privatized. Efficiency is still damned, as is evident in private healthcare as well as private prisons; they would rather Government just sends public money to be wasted in a hole rather than being the hole themselves.

Its hilarious.

And no I didn't mean it as an insult, it was just the tone of the thread.

But enough about healthcare and Obama's inability to fulfill promises in a thread about SOPA.
Yeah and SOPA/PROTECTIP/whatever it is called now wouldn't be a problem if he had actually vetoed it like he threatened to.

Because the World Wide Web was created by the United States Military and we have all the rights in the world to control how everyone is able to use it.

Fuck that. Leave the Internets alone. :v:

Its impossible. They can try all they like, but the Internet will always be free.

Wrong. If ISPs just ban all IPs except those on the white list, they win. They can also monitor your access, and send police to any IP that attempts to access restricted material.

Pocket Veto.By the way -- I'm Canadian so spare me for being "ignorant". Couldn't a "pocket veto" be signed by a later President? Or is it like Canada where after an election pending bills metaphorically die in a fire?

Warsaw
January 11th, 2012, 06:50 PM
It dies. Congress would have to start it up again when they come back from vacation (!) and resubmit to the executive for signature.

Also, ignorance doesn't annoy me. People talking out of their ass while being obviously ignorant annoys me. Not trying to sound like I'm the one to decide, but you've been fine since you know the limits of your knowledge (which is actually quite good).

The joke was that it was over a relatively small point that I'm willing to guess the vast majority of common Americans don't even know... along with just about everything else we've discussed thus far.

Yeah. But the real problem isn't that they don't know, it's that they don't care to know.

Unfortunately, the Pocket Veto can ONLY be used on the brink of a Congressional "vacation" simply because it can easily backfire. If Congress does not disperse before the duration of the President's overlook of the bill expires, then that bill becomes law. It's a very tricky situation that happened from (please correct me if I'm wrong here) the Jackson era considering he used it very effectively (and a shit ton as well).

In recent news today. We win.

http://mashable.com/2012/01/20/sopa-is-dead-smith-pulls-bill/

I would like to congratulate Anonymous yesterday by simultaneously taking down several major websites being used by the government as well as heavy SOPA supporters. As well as to everyone who bitched to congress, I know I did. This was probably one of the most venomous outcries the internet has ever done.

ejburke

You really think Anonymous was helping anything? Common sense and reason prevailed, not cyber-shananigans. You don't get your point across through provocation and if Anonymous were the only opposition to the bill, it would have passed out of sheer spite.
