Adobe giving away free copies of CS2 software package including Photoshop (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=cs2_downloads)

The site (http://www.adobe.com/special/message.html) is getting hammered now but Adobe has started giving away free copies of its now ancient Creative Suite 2 (CS2) package, which includes Photoshop and a host of Adobe's other design software.

Sure, CS2 is nearly ten years old but there's still a lot of good stuff in this software bundle including the aforementioned Photoshop, along with Adobe Bridge (which was first released in CS2), Illustrator, InDesign, Version Cue, and a design guide and training resources.

In B4 keygen infraction.

Up until building a new PC, I used CS2 because it was the last version to not have an irritating interface. Aside from that, it's still a perfectly functional piece of software that'd meet the needs of the majority of users just fine.

CS2 is nearly ten years old

2005 doesn't feel like that long ago.

I used premiere pro 2.0 for some of the CE league videos I think... wow. #wow

i always love seeing companies do stuff like this. its like a gesture of good faith onto the community. instead of blindly accusing their user base of piracy and implementing ridiculous DRM schemes, they offer an older, but still fully functional version of their software for free. that is awesome.

I think Adobe does both, although they're not giving away anything more than an error page at the moment.

I still have CS2 on my laptop. Definitely worth upgrading for newer and updated features, but CS2 was rock solid and stable. I think CS2 was the last version before they moved to media encoder wasn't it?

as far as i know, they havent offered any free version of their products before now. i was looking for a student version for educational purposes, but even that is only offered at a discount.

that is incredibly frustrating when a class calls for photoshop.

I'd be having words with whoever runs the course if it calls for Photoshop and they're not providing adequate arrangements that don't involve buying it.

they have it on all the classroom computers, but that involves staying in the classroom. i prefer doing my work at home where i can sit there all slouched over with my dick hanging out. plus its kind of nice to always have access to the software when youre not in class. thats kind of besides the point though. my point is that this is a good thing.

It would be cool if autodesk did this for some of their software. At least for Max 8.

It sounds like they're not actually handing these out, but rather they made a fuck-up.

Yeah they shut down the auth servers and published a key for anybody reinstalling. Then someone thought it was a good idea to post about it on reddit and it took off from there.

They've got download links and serials posted up, so I guess it's all good.

Response from Adobe:

On behalf of Adobe Systems Incorporated ...

You have heard wrong! Adobe is absolutely not providing free copies of CS2!

What is true is that Adobe is terminating the activation servers for CS2 and that for existing licensed users of CS2 who need to reinstall their software, copies of CS2 that don't require activation but do require valid serial numbers are available. (Special serial numbers are provided on the page for each product download.) See <http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1114930>.

You are only legally entitled to download and install with that serial number if you have a valid license to the product!

Basically, they've recompiled special versions of CS2 (the ones on that download page) without the activation requirement but left the serial requirement in to make sure only actual owners of CS2 could install it. Then they went ahead and posted serials anyway. Makes sense.

Another response from Adobe:

Effective December 13, Adobe disabled the activation server for CS2 products and Acrobat 7 because of a technical glitch. These products were released over 7 years ago and do not run on many modern operating systems.

A technical glitch has permanently disabled the activation servers and apparently current versions of Windows aren't modern.

You can read the hilarity here - http://forums.adobe.com/message/4974662. Gotta love it. :golfclap:

Hahahahah, so everyone loves you and thinks you're doing a super nice thing that won't hurt you at all, and then you turn it around and be like, "oh, no that's not what we intended at all". There are no words to describe how dense you have to be to pull that lol.
