View Full Version : Any way to extract the sounds?

Has a method yet been devised to get at the sound files comprising Halo 2 Vista? I actually bought the game largely to have access to the files without having to record them myself. Imagine my boundless joy, finding them locked away in .map files! I am aware that there's still work to be done decrypting this stuff, as I have done some research, but I was curious if sound files had become available yet since I haven't seen them mentioned specifically one way or the other. Does anyone know of a method to get at them?

It's a bit of a personal quest of mine--I haven't customized the sounds on my PC in years, and the practice seems to have fallen into disfavor. I'd like nothing more than to have those clean Halo 2 sounds tied to logon, messenger programs, etc.

There are no resource extractors for Halo 2 Vista yet. The only other alternative is: you could attempt researching the structure of map cache files to figure out how to nab a sound from a map.

Yea I'm er trying to do the reverse, put a custom sound into H2V. But so far no good.

So, is this possible yet? Can we get the sounds out of the map files? Having Dr. Breen welcome me into City 17/Windows instead of an Elite is sacrilege.

I tested my sound tool code with H2GuerillaRadio for the bloodgulch ambiance and Lightning said it worked fine ingame.
I haven't taken the time to finish writing the reconstruction code for sound tag extraction since they are stored in a more optimized format in the caches. Nothing trivial though.

For Halo2 xbox there are tools to extract and add in new sounds. If you just want the sounds, you could get the h2xbox files (from an h2 disk through a modded xbox, or etc...) and extract the sounds from its files now. It'll probably be a while before someone releases a tool to get the sounds straight from the h2vista files.

Lacking a modded xbox. Can you link me to a utility that allows this through a PC? I have the Halo 2 Xbox disk, of course.

He has extensive knowledge of Blam! and has already gotten it to work through the actual editing kit. Why would he go through your program looking for help?

People have been able to do that since a Halo 2 Xbox came out, its nothing new...

Right. So could anyone tell me how to do it? Or point me to a tutorial? Or something? Or isn't it possible on a PC?

Okay, so I waited "awhile". Did extracting the H2V sounds ever become feasible without an xbox lying around?
