HI, i'm new to Halo 2 Vista map editing so I was going through the tutorial. I'm sure I did everything correctly, but when compiling I got an error: Unable to find shader "material #26" (that's the material for f_im flat_light_scratchy). If I ignore hte error and try to load in sapien, it tells me the file is corrupted and closes. I'm not sure what I did wrong since the material has the correct name. Please help me out. Thanks.

The part with Sapien is because you must first run lightmaps - the help file lies to us. They must be run the first time you compile a BSP.

hmm...i ran "compile and light" this time but it still says it's corrupt.

Open your scenario in guerilla and find the part with bsp/lightmaps - be sure it references a valid scenario_structure_lightmaps. If that doesn't work, then something else is causing it that I don't know about.

Structure BSP: mylevel.scenario_structure_bsp
Structure Lightmap: (nothing)

In that case, point the missing lightmap to either
A. One in your level's folder, if it exists, or
B. The one in scenarios\multi\example, for temporary lightmaps until you sucessfully make your own.

okay. it worked. Thanks a million. but i'm still wondering: why is the lightmap missing? Shouldn't the compiler have generated one?

For some reason or another it might have been interrupted or otherwise unsucessful - you can always use the "light only" option, or use the CMD prompt to type in the command manually.

I have two (final) problems.
1. I don't think this is really problematic, but the floor looks all funky in sapien. It is multicolored instead of grey.
2. WHen I package the level and then try to play it it sys there are no maps in the custom maps folder. Furthermore, when i try to go to my working directory to copy it, i notice that i am unable to navigate to the working directory using explorer (it works just fine with other programs). On top of that, I can't find the custom maps folder.

That's because of a missing shader - Halo 2 defaults to "invalid.shader," which is the multicolor that you see. Finding a way to fix your shader reference in 3ds will solve this.

I can't help you with this, other than to say be sure you're checking off "copy map to folder" or whatever that option is - I've never had this problem.

the option is checked, so i dunno. as for the shader, how do I fix the reference? if it's the name, then I don't know what to do since I copied and pasted it right out of the tutorial. Also, I had to skip the Guerilla section since the shaders folder it specified did not exist.

;)This is because there is a really g@y feature on vista called user accont control that you need to turn off. Go to the control panel, then to an option called user accounts then to 'turn user accounts on or off'. Turn it OFF. You will have to restart but now when you package your map it will copy to your custom maps folder.
:eek:BUT BeWARE!!!!!!
:XD:Backup everything before you do this in a sepperate folder in like my documents or something. For some people (like me) when they do this, their stuff in the 'Halo 2 map editior" folder (i mean the stuff they created like .scenario files and .max files) just dissapear.
Have fun, and to get rid of that multicolor crap just make shaders for your bitmaps and make .shader_collections files to reference your shaders.
:DAND PLEASE>............................. when you make your map make a custom strings file so your map has a name. I get so pissed seeing like 40 'Halo 2 level games going on, but all on different maps.
I have a question, how do you make file extension show in vista???
