You can't really shove something in the silly basket just because you don't agree with it.

I studied agriculture for a good 4 years, so I know what kind of damage both mass livestock production and crops can cause. Livestock fuck the atmosphere and take up shitloads of water, and crop monoculture (which is really the only credible way to grow things) destroys the soil and fucks with the water table (bringing on salinity issues and eventual desertification). Greenhouse-grown crops are better but they take up a considerable amount of water and you still need to build the damn thing somewhere. You can, of course, take measures to lessen the damage but that's like just patting dry tar into a pothole and hoping it won't wash out come the next storm. There's no magical solution, there are just too many people wanting too much food and no change in eating habits will change that, unless that change is everyone deciding to starve themselves.

tl;dr it makes jack all difference in the long run so honestly I wish people would just shut the fuck up about it and stop trying to shove their own preference down everyone else's throat under some flimsy moral pretence based off half-baked figures. I'm not going to go around slipping meat into vegetarians' lunches but if someone tries to tell me what I can and can't eat, then I'm going to tell them where to go stick their tofu patties.

e/ To clarify:

Look mate, I have no issues with you being a veg; like I said, been there, done that. I applaud the way you've managed to stick it out and not back down from it, too. However I do get a little pissed - and don't take this personally, because a damn lot of people do it - when someone trolls a veg, or someone brings it up and someone misunderstands something, and it sparks some huge argument in which nearly any veg present will take the supposed moral high ground and launch into some titanic tirade about how livestock destroys the Earth and so on and so forth with the intention of both discrediting and guilt-tripping the other party. I really, really cannot tolerate that shit, and nor am I too pleased with the ones who trigger it in the first place.

All told, there is little difference in the environmental impact, and that's especially evident in a country like Australia. If you graze livestock, you're putting methane into the atmosphere which you aren't getting back out. You're burning through a copious amount of water per animal, and that's not even including the water used at the abbatoirs. Given that we've been in a state of almost perpetual drought for years now, that doesn't go over so well. That said, crops need water too, and some are just as 'wasteful' as livestock (if not worse) due to a need for partial or total immersion or constant supplies of water. The biggest problems we have with crops are erosion and salinity (which in turn leads to desertification). To give you an idea of how shite our soil is, my old house (coastal, urban) had about an inch of (poor) topsoil (if that) and then clay down to the bedrock. Most of our farming land has even less, and the weather here comes in two varieties: monsoonal or searing hot with no cloud cover to speak of. It doesn't take many storms to take literal tonnes of the already barely-sufficient topsoil and dump it somewhere it's not needed, like the sea, or on top of some other poor sap's crops. Assuming you can prevent that by minimal tillage or leaving stubble down to anchor it, you've still got salinity to deal with. If you clear land, you're going to raise the water table. If you clear it too much, you're going to end up with your crops sucking up far more salt than is good for them, and as a result, dying. Congratulations, that land is now useless. If you're lucky, you might be able to recover it with time, money, effort and a massive dent in production and therefore profit; much more often it just gets worse to the point where the whole area dries up, dies off, and becomes a desert. Keep in mind that (here at least), cattle eat a damn sight more grass than they do grain over the course of their growing period, and their grain can be grown in shittier areas as it doesn't need to meet standards like stuff for human consumption does. If everyone were to go veg, we'd be clearing what little decent land we have left and sticking crops in there like sardines, and it'd just cock everything up so bad we wouldn't be able to grow crops nor livestock. Growing everything hydroponically would just exacerbate the water issue unless you set up a very complicated recycling system (which I've seen), and it takes time and money. Remember that farmers need to eat too, and keep a roof over their heads and their land under their name. It's a very fine balance, and going too far in either direction will just make things worse. When push comes to shove, I like to eat meat pies, you like to drink soy milk, we're both happy doing so and we'd have no right to tell each other to do otherwise. For all I care you could have just decided to go veg on a whim and stuck with it, it doesn't matter to me. What does matter is when people start talking absolute shite just to make the other side look bad, or believing what is honestly flat-out propaganda. If people want to switch, they will. Otherwise, let them be.
